Firstly I would like to say that these forums are total crap, I've logged in 12 times (typing password and username), then had to click "login" at the top of the page every couple of seconds. Then to top it off if I go to post something I get logged back out and have to start again.
Anyway I've just bought myself a Merlin (Frigate)
Low = 2 Mid = 4 High = 4 (2 Turret, 2 Launcher)
I want to know what would be a suitable fitting for combat? I asked in rookie help but got spammed to death by all sorts of replys most of which were confusing! Hopefully someone here can help me.

Believe me, they used to be better, hopefully some rabbling will fix it .
If I recall corectly, a PvE merlin would be something like:
2x standard launchers 2x small railguns
1x medium or small shield booster 1x shield extender 2x shield hardners or resistance amplifiers
2x ballistic control units or whatever engineering or electronics mods you need to make it fit
the specific modules and weapons, its up to you, but this seems fairly good imo

ANd PvP merlin needs 720MM x2
That's how much sense these forums make.

1x medium or small shield booster
A new player's cap will die after like two cycles with a Medium booster, not to mention it's possible they may not even be able to fit it after the guns and launchers.
PvE
2x 125mm 2x Missile Launchers
Malkuths are good and they are fairly commonly dropped loot. They are really good for CPU.
1x Small Shield Booster 1x Small Shield Extender 1x Invul Field 1x AB (Since the Merlin handles like a brick in a tub of molasses)
1x Magnetic Field Stabilizer (for damage on your guns) 1x Power Diagnostic System (for extra cap and recharge, shield recharge and a little extra PG, which is always short on Frigates)
or 2x PDS (for extra PG and all the extra recharge)
There are many options. You can just not fit the AB and Invul Field and fit two damage specific hardeners. The good thing about the Merlin, though, is that it can kill from range. Missiles don't miss, and the farther you are away (as long as you are in Optimal Range) your guns will rarely miss, either. The problem you will most likely have on a Merlin is either its capacitor or its PG. IIRC, the Merlin has more CPU than any T1 Frigate, so you shouldn't have a problem with that.
Don't forget that Hybrid guns also means blasters. Sure, you have to get close, but if you don't die getting there, whatever you get close to will die very, very fast.
The better fitting skills you have, the easier it will be to fit your frig with good stuff. I'm not totally sure you will be able to fit all I have listed, but be creative! A lot of named items are drops from rat killing and you can fit your ships quite nicely after a couple hours of high-sec ratting.

Well Dark, I use Firefox and there's still something borked here. It seems like it got borked recently, when by some coincidence they said they were working on the forums.
I have to hit reply twice to an item before it actually works to reply. Except for the other day when it wouldn't work for anything.

I have:
2 Malkuth standard launchers 2 125 mm compressed coil railguns
1 small shield booster 1 shield extender 1 cap recharger 1 afterburner (to come once I get one more engineering skill)
1 Power diagnostic system 1 dunno its name, increases rate of fire and damage of my weapons, some form of stabaliser.
This works very well for me, just walked through WC, which is good enough for me.

That's pretty much the exact same loadout I have, except....
Swap the cap recharger and AB for a passive EM and passive thermal hardener, and a missile damage mod instead of a hybrid.
Those combined with the 15% shield bonus resist he'll have due to the ship bonus, should give at least 50% across the board. If he can figure out the damage types the rats he's facing are, it can get even higher. Unless it's sansha.

I did it diferently for mine and ran all the way up to the end of lvl 2 missions in a Merlin.
I had 1 medium named shield booster, 1 medium named extender, an afterburner and a Barton Reactor (gives more cap or cap recharge).
For the lows I used 2 power diagnostic systems to increase cap and shield hp and recharge.
