Anyone else seen this?
Obviously I'll never leave EVE, but kinda makes me wonder what the Devs are planning in the future.
Anyone else ever think about what EVE will be like in two or three years? With hardware technology advancing as fast as it is, and with the player base growing to bring in valuable spending money for CCP would this eventually be possible?

Cool vid
I have no doubt games will be like that in the not too distant future.
Hopefully Eve (or Eve II?) will be like that one day

It's a video of the Infinity engine - there's been a few discussions of it before (search for 'Infinity' at the top right). Despite this being a strange thing for a graphics programmer to say, I think the most important thing is that if we do features involving planets, it should be compelling gameplay that drives them.

I agree with you. Though the biggest thing that eve needs is atmosphere. You chaps have worked so hard on making the gameplay as good as it is ( and its brilliant), there's still something missing.
Its not something you think of when you're in a gang or fleet, but when you're flying about by yourself the universe feels empty.
Planetary interaction would count otwards this in a big way. Imagine landing on a planet to drop a remote mining device? or just while you pop out for more beer? (stops the piwates finding you if your engines are switched off). (these aren't ideas to put forward just points of conversation)
Of course this is way, way in the future.
I remember reading something a month or two ago from Oveur regarding the convoys, and civilian npcs that we used to have. This is the sort of thing I'm yabbering on about.
Would be cool to take a trip though the mountain ranges on Amarr in a shuttle or something though.

yes we need the content and interactive ability to make it worthwhile

Thats from 2004?
I assume the devs have either been busy with other things, or the hardware needed costs more than a small country.

Actually I think it was more they couldn't think of a good reason to get that working properly ingame, other than sexy graphics.

You see this is something that CCP really need to get to grips with. Constantly we're teased and promised things and they just never show up.
That video is from 2 years ago and there's been no mention of the idea since? I stopped playing EVE about 14 months ago because I was fed up of the constant delaying of Kali. I returned 3 months or so ago and STILL there's no sign of Kali and the estimated date for it has been put back again now.
Factional Warfare has been put back even further with Kali now being split into multiple parts. I honestly don't think we'll see any of Kali until the 3rd quarter of 2007, over 12 months from now.
It does your reputation no good CCP. Stop promising things that you can't deliver, start exercising tighter control on the flow of half-finished ideas. Yes it's great the you, the devs, communicate with us, but please try to do it on a less flakey basis eh?

I hereby renounce space flight. It was so cool looking it was hard to believe it was Eve. Considering the real thing doesn't even have decent texture resolution on the planets.
But is it just me or did it 'pop' down to the surface when it warped to the second planet? Or did I miss something? ---------- Throwing ships away doing stupid things since April '06 |

I for my part fail to see what why some people think that vid was so special. (Planetary) Flight sims had graphics like this for *years*.

Cos its in EVE, the game we love, play, and live in.
Not some "other flight sim".

it is amazing, and it reminds me of my early days in eve when everything was amazing and new,
well since 2.5 years or somethin i know eve is the same everywhere - its just the player alliances that change and keep me in the game.
would b nice if ccp could bring some of that old feeling back tho ;), like with planets like in that video where u can explore important stuff and whatnot,
ah btw - a graphic like in that last video from ccp, where size actually matters ;), and u see the difference between a battleship and a frig. - Purple Conquered The World, We the Universe.

QFT, I'm also frustrated by the delays, but would much rather play on a stable platform. The past 2 months have been great as the problems from the last patch have been ironed out and the hardware is performing up to expectations. Haven't had a CTD for weeks now \o/
Having said that - I would very, very,very much like to see new content this year at the least - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Oh, it would be certainly nice. Was just referring to the graphics which, while not being bad, do not really justify these "OMG, those are uber-graphics, you need a supercomputer to run those" comments.

Seems to me, that the FF2004 Vid is a very snazzy graphical trick, similar to the asteroids & stuff that you can fly through in some mission locations etc, just on a much larger scale. While it looks cool, and might make some stuff (Deliver the Planetary Speeder thingehs missions?) marginally more involving, It serves no real Gameplay advantage.
"Watching that video gets me really excited for the day when we have planetary warfare. I can just imagine zooming all the way out from a planets surface to the full view of the galaxy." - CCP Hammer - 21st June 2006
The above quote demonstrates that its not something thats forgotten about, but rather (imho), something that requires a massive shakeup of the eve world, with huge ramifications.
In a contested system, you not only have Starbases & Outposts, but Planets Too. Using each planets Automatic Atmospheric Entry System, Certain Classes of ships (Probably only Shuttles, and Imho Only Atmospheric Entry Ships/Specialized Fighter Drones/Troop Freighters?), Can be sent down to the Planet, in order to capture/control Planets. This should be a timed thing anyways, if you hold a star system for a long enough period, you would obviously be able to secure the planets. But being able to Improve the speed of capture using your own forces (Destroying Control Structures?, Achieving Air Superiority?), Perhaps in Support of a Faction or Alliance Navy in space, Should speed up the Capture of a System. And Perhaps result in a steady flow of income, or special materials required for techX or something along those lines. It could also be used to prolong system warfare, where POS wars often become Drawn out & Tedious.
Until such large changes can be made, and the eve world support such things, I think its a good thing planets are left abstract in the game.

Atmosphere Drag? Effects of gravity? Also there was talk about overheating mods on ships, so you would have to add the heat from entering the Atmosphere.
Eve is becomign more Sim like by the second..

i hope we can own planets. be able to do mining, missions and maybe ground operations. have plantary defences and so on. this would add so much more and i can't wait. i was hoping for jove, but want planetary interaction now more than ever.

I'd love it if planetary stations and orbital stations differed in what they offered from an RP perspective.
For instance, only planet based stations could refine, because planetary stations simply don't have enough room for the equipment and minerals.
Only orbital stations can have cloning facilities because atmosphere disrupts your consciousness transfer at the time of your death.
Orbital stations have limited market capacity, ie, you can't sell 1000 ravens from a station, there's simply not enough room to store them all.
Insurance, corp offices and kill agents are in orbital stations, while your courier type agents are planet side.
And so on and so forth....

In regards to planet-ship interaction, I can hear the onboard computer voice saying "Warning. Your badger has no means of flight in an atmosphere under planetary gravitational pull."

Really, it's only the hope that planetary flight and interaction will one day make it into the game that keeps me here for the long haul. I mean, as great as EVE is, it still gets left behind in many ways by the old classic Frontier: Elite 2. However, I think CCP are the people with the vision and impetus to implement such a system and do so in a genre-defining way.
Only downside is they're taking their own sweet time about getting there... __________________________________________

At the risk of sounding simulation-ist, perhaps sovereignty could be attained with planetary bases...
...that grow into communities...
...that get taxed.
