Not really, since the latest SU 37's now have thrust vectoring nozzels on the engines...Same as the F22 raptors, but with the advantage that the nozzels can be refrofitted in earlier planes like the SU 27 and 29 since they use the same engines...
It's what allows them the steep angle of attack maneuvers at much lower air speeds, that you see in the video, without stalling the engines in the process....You even see the plane turning quite abruptly at times, makes the plane a much better dog fighter despite it's size, even though that isn't it's primary role(air superiority)...

Yes, but Su-35's are also capable of the same moves with slightly more difficulty seeing as a Su-37 is an upgraded Su-35.

Well not quite. The new manuver is "he who get his nose first to enemy get the first dib". With thrust vector, you can quickly turn your nose to passing chaser and fire his side armor. At least that's the theory... ---------

The SU-37 shown here is actually a pretty old aircraft (old as in 10-15+ years). That first manuveur is called the Cobra Head or something similar. The SU-37 was the first aircraft to be able to pull it off due to thrust vectoring (as jamesw already pointed out) and the front horizontal ailerons being used on correlation with each other. That, and some damn fine piloting skills. Sig must be under 24000 bytes and no more than 400W x 120H - Cathath ([email protected]) |

The Su-37 is curently 10yrs old having made it's maiden flight in April 1996. Origianlly it was to be an upgraded version of an Su-27, but later models are more of a replacement for the Su-35's.
The move is called 'Pugachev's Cobra' named after the test pilot who first performed it. The move while great for airshows has no practical use in Air Combat, due to the limits under which it cna be performed and the incredible stress put both on the plane, and piots. This move if done wrong can and has killed several pilots from extreme G forces (15+ G's).
Also the Su-37 was not in fact the first to perform this move. Su-27's, Mig-29's, F-16's, F-15's, F-14's, F-22's, and Su-35's were all capable of this move but were unable to reach the same Angle of Attack (AoA) as the Su-37 is.
Su-37's are also capable of a move called the 'Frolov Chakra' which is similar to a Cobra but instead of leveling out the plane continues to turn backwards, and momentarily will be flying backwards before returning to forward flight.

Edited by: IonHammer on 06/07/2006 04:13:50 Ok i am not up of planes like most here, but watched a good doco on stealth planes recently and that f-22 crash was during the trials way back and was mainly pilot error (ie it was a interaction of thrust vectoring software and pilot stick actions at low level, well thats what the doco said:) ).
Witht the F-22 decade long roll out and extensive flight testing it seems the only planes that can go up against it would be those like the s-47 as it continues to shoot down all on commer's in 1 v 4 and 2 v 8 tests with no loss.
That btw is with pilots that fly both F-22 and F-15 planes so u would thing they would have a good chance to exploit any weekness.
The thing i found most interesting is that the majority of US stealth theory was based off unrestricted papers from the SU needless to say those guy are now in the US thankyou very much.
It does make me wonder where the west will get its next good theroies from. I guess the SU at that time still has a few ex **** scientists alive and kicking while all ours have died due to having to much of a good time rofl.
Oh just a note; wtf would you need to face your apponent to shoot at him for that **** went out the window shortly after the first or second gen sidewinder missiles and no doubt the same for SU weapon systems.
The only big thing u need to tell the missile to do is go here and hunt in this direction. I could say more bu ti would have to shoot myself j/k.

While I admit the F-22 is an awesome plane(even if grossly overpriced) it has yet to under go full combat testing with another 5th Gen Fighter other than the EuroFighter(which is trash) The Soviet S-37(or S-32, Su-47) and the Mig 1.44/1.42 are the current steps towards a Soviet 5th Gen Fighter, and while they are still rather far back on testing they have shown to be capable of keeping up with, and possibly even passing an F-22 in a combat situation.
The S-37 has superior manueverabilty in sub-sonic and super-sonic flight due to the forward swept wings, while also maintaining stealth technology similar to the F-22. The new Mig's are capable of competing with the F-22's at BVR (Beyond Visual Range) combat with highly advanced radar and other avionics components.
It should be rather interesting to see what happens should the Soviets put these planes into production, and start supplying them to other countries.

The Su-47 (formerly known as the S-37, not to be confused with the Su-37 featured here, which is a Su-27 derivative) has to my knowledge been canned. It is an experimental test aircraft, not a production fighter.
Sukhoi and MiG are jointly developing a 5th generation fighter, the PAK-FA, which will feature technology tested on the Su-47 and MiG 1.44. It will not feature the Su-47's forward swept wings, or the 1.44's delta wing; it looks a lot like a F-22 or JSF. They appear to be following the current US trend of stealthy supercruising, as opposed to earlier fighter designs.
Originally by: BlackHawk177

The Typhoon (~$90 mil) was never meant to go head to head with the F-22 (~$300 mil). It's more comparable to the F-35 JSF (~$50 mil?). The only thing on the horizon remotely in the class of the F-22 will be Russia's PAK-FA, which is currently undergoing testing.
Quote: The Soviet S-37(or S-32, Su-47) and the Mig 1.44/1.42 are the current steps towards a Soviet 5th Gen Fighter, and while they are still rather far back on testing they have shown to be capable of keeping up with, and possibly even passing an F-22 in a combat situation.
We don't know that, considering the thing hasn't even flown yet. Full details about these aircrafts' actual capabilities would be kept classified.
Quote: The S-37 has superior manueverabilty in sub-sonic and super-sonic flight due to the forward swept wings, while also maintaining stealth technology similar to the F-22.
The S-37/Su-47 is not a stealth aircraft. Maybe if the plasma stealth concept works out, some stealth elements could be added to it, but it won't match a true stealth design. Manueverability is not as important as it once was. It's still nice to have, which is why all these next generation fighters have thrust vectoring, but some of the sacrifices aren't worth it.
Forward swept wings are much harder to make stealthy. You can build it out of composites, or paint it with RAM, but you can't change the geometry. The wings also experience strong divergent forces at high speeds, which limits the aircraft's top speed and range.
Supermanueverable aircraft are a cool idea, and forward swept wing aircraft look amazing, but the future of air combat is going to be stealthy aircraft with superior avionics systems, improved C4ISR integration, and supercruise.
Quote: The new Mig's are capable of competing with the F-22's at BVR (Beyond Visual Range) combat with highly advanced radar and other avionics components.
We don't know much about the Russian 5th generation fighter avionics. We do know they have some really nice missiles with longer ranges and better manuverability than American AMRAAMs. Of course US systems tend to have better electronics and targeting. Russian fighters have the advantage in missiles, but have to play catch up on electronics.
Quote: It should be rather interesting to see what happens should the Soviets put these planes into production, and start supplying them to other countries.
Russia's PAK-FA is scheduled to make a first flight sometime next year. It's going to be a while before they enter production, and longer before they're selling any to other countries. They might consider joint development with China and India though, for additional funding.
Right now the Russian export fighter to have is the Su-30. China is a customer, and I hear Chavez in Venezuela is planning on buying a few.

Plasma steath is not "untrue stealth" by definition, depending on how good it is.
Truth is, if russians masters plasma stealth, their 5. generation plane could out perform F22 totally, and be cheaper. We honestly dont know anything about it atm.
