if you want to be a pvper, what you need to worry about the most is how good is your perception/willpower attributes.
I know caldari can achieve a very good perception/willpower starting point, so your probably lucky more than unlucky.
Like others have said, you can easily train other ship races, shouldnt be much of a problem.
If you want to be a pvp'er Id recomment minmatar ships, they are quite fun in pvp ;o

Can somone expalain how Minmatar compare to the other races? (advantages/dis)
Or is my only racial bonus being able to constuct ships from toilet paper and duct tape?

Minmatar ships are excelent acctually... The Tempest is highly prized in fleets because of its ability to dish out high damge vollies that do a load of damage in the first shot. It's a true Alphastrike ship.
The Typhoon is insane, there is no other ship in the game that requires that many skills to use currently, but the damage potential it has is downright frightning. It can atack at the same time with 4 guns plus damage bonus, 4 launchers plus damage bonus and 5 heavy drones, with 5 lights in reserve to fight off interceptors. The amount of weaponry and firepower that gives it is awsome.
Minmatar ships usually require the highest amount of skillpoints and very good player strategy to use effectively, but they are very powerful when used by a true master, which is only helped by the fact that people usually underestimate them greatly.

I was caldari but i trained to gallente because when i was carebearing missions i thought spicing up my drone skills would help for lvl4s, and now im flying a domi for pve, and a vexor for pvp....
In 6 months time i hope ill be flying a tech2 blaster fitted vindicator with 5x tech2 heavy drones...pwnage

Having flown every BS in game and trained enough skills to use them all at least half properly when it came to the time to specialise I chose the Tempest. This was mainly because I love the Alphastrike strategy. T2 1400s give awesome medium to long range damage and are capable at extreme ranges too.
About this time I was persuaded to try an autocannon Tempest for gate camping and it rocks. As projectiles use no cap then you can divert all that cap for defense (against gate sentries if needed ) and the short range damage is comperable to other short range setups from Pulse lasers and blasters.
I still fly light Caldari ships especially Crow Caracal Harpy and Hawk. But for now I'll stick with tempest for PvP BS

as a new player ur best of specialising in a race,
and if id start new i wouldnt do that in caldari, cause theres only the crow and eagle intesting to fly,
the rest is useful and effective - but boring.
the tier3 bs might change it, but who knows ;)
amarr isnt that much fun either,
go for gallente or minm is my advice.

i did a similar mistake as you did.
i picked caldri based on stats and I HATE there ships sigh
currently im training up hybrid gun skills, so i may swap to gal eventualy.
im currently plugging my hopes on the tier3 rail boat, if that sucks. then full swing change

Don't base your decisions upon some rumors. The races follow diffrent philosophies. Pick the one that fit's your playstile best and train for it (I decided to be cool and trained for Minmatar and now Gallente ).
However Caldari are far from being the worst race for PvP.
