IÆm confused about the whole death process in Eve. IÆve been through all the manuals and interactive guides. How do I protect my assets?
I understand the following to some extent:
1. I have a clone of similar skill point to my character, but is the clone kept up to date, or is it locked in at the date of order?
2. I have ship insurance, but does this cover equipment on the ship? That stuff is worth more than the ship itself at this point.
3. What about stuff in the cargo hold? And the stuff at stations?
I ask because IÆve been paying my dues and doing some pretty boring agent mission, trying to build up assets. IÆd hate to do this over because itÆs quite tedious, and I want to get on to better stuff & interacting with real people.
Thanks in advance for any help here.

1) As long as your clone as at least as many SP as your character at the moment your escape pod is blown up, you're fine. Your character's knowledge isn't placed into the clone until your pod is breached.
2) Insurance only covers the ship. When you insure, it shows what the policy costs, and what the policy pays when your ship is blown up.
3) Roughly half of your ship's modules and what's in the cargo hold will blow up, and the other half is placed in a loot can for your attacker like when you blow up NPCs.
All stuff at your stations is totally unaffected. And before anyone asks, your wallet is unaffected as well (except for your insurance payout, which is added to it).

Insurance (at the highest level - platinum) covers cost of the ship only. There is no insurance for fittings. Don't keep valuable stuff in your cargo hold unless you are in the middle of a mission. Select a home station and keep your stuff in the hangar there.
Be sure that the clone that you have a contract for preserves a skill point level greater than what you are presently at.
eg. I have a 15mill SP clone and have 7.XXmill SPs. I'll pay the extra mill in isk to have a higher clone contract since after the 7.0mill SP clone, the next highest is 15mill SPs.

Also, any implants you have stuck in your head are lost if your pod is destroyed. |

I have a question:
What happens when you are podded without a clone?

You always have a clone; your empire won't let you go without one. The only problem is that the default clone they pay for only covers 30,000 skill points. This means that if you don't pay for a new clone, and you get podded, you lose skill points out the butt.

The above is all true.
To make it clear, it is YOUR responsibility to keep your medical clone (the one that activates when you die) up to date. You can do this at any station with the medical button thingy on the right hand side of the hangar screen.
Insurance only covers your ship for the material value. If you buy a faction ship or a tech 2 ship then the insurance will fall far short of the actual cost. By the time you get to fly that sort of gear you should be mmaking good money anyway.
All the gear in your hangar is not affected by your death. In fact if you dock your pod into a station without a ship in it I believe a new beginners ship will be waiting for you. The CONCORD mail you receive will tell you about it. I think you even get a 1 lump tritanium as a gift. LOL
The only way to lose gear in a hangar is if you are in a POS (Player Owned Station) and someone comes along and blows it away. POS are rare in empire space and even more rare in high sec space so you probably won't be making one your home for quite some time.
If your clone is not up to date (Like you die twice in a day and forgot to upgrade the new clone to suit your skill levels) then you lose a certain amount of your skill points. You don't lose ALL of them down to the value of the clone. It is a pain but not a disaster.
