I have heard alot about it, i have seen alot of people whining about it, but i have never heard anyone say what it is. My corp is moving into PvP and i think it is good information to have, not to mention the interesting forums i read about it. If you know what the grid exploit is could you let me know? |

I think it's when you're in a section of space where, because of game mechanics, no one can lock you're ship. ________________________________________________

A grid exploit is also called a fold in space. One example that I have come across is in a belt. You warp in and see no belt, no NPC pirates, nothing. However as you move forward all of the sudden the belt appears. Now this can be vary bad if you are by yourself in a lower security sector as the pirates can suddenly be roght on top of you. As many others have posted in the forums another exploit which is VERY nasty is the one where you can not see the one's that are hitting you therefor you can boy target them. They see you, you don't see them.
Its a really bad exploit and those that are found to be using them knowingly receive banishment from the game, as it should be. Don't do it!!. If you run into a fold in space or are attacked in by individual(s)possibly in one get a screen shot and file a petition. Beleive it or not the GM's will respond..

You actually can target them. They appear in your threat window, you can lock onto them by right-click on the threat window.
I just thought I would clear that up, I hate the grid exploits. People use them to hide in belts so I can't easily find them to blow them up. But how can you prove they are doing it on purpose and know about the grid line? --------------------------------------- CSM Chat Log September 25, 2003: Fuhry> Some things we simply cannot test, and therefore we just put it on Tranq. cross our fingers and then get into panic m |

so basicly the grid exploit is like a bug? seems to me that it would be very easy for a person to do it unintinally and seems like it would be very hard for a person to um use one to a advantage

The way the game is designed, space is divided up into a bunch of cubes that form a grid pattern. Only objects/players in the same grid as you get rendered, to decrease lag. These grids are i believe only about 300km across. Now if you are in grid A, and someone else is on the border fo grid B and grid A, you cannot target them, and they will suddenly appear out of nowhere giving them the element of surprize. Sometimes stations, belts, jumpgates, and other places players would go to, are either in two grids(mostly asteroid belts) or near the boarder of two grids. This can cause confusion when you dont see what you expect to see. The biggest example of this was a battle in fountain a while back, I'm sure others can tell you more about that than me. Usually the problems associated with the grid will cause people to report explotation, even when there was no intention of exploiting. I personally have seen (or not seen?) this happen(although i dont think the people doing it were doing it intentionally) and what seemed to happen was people would warp in far away(about 100km) and then dissapear. So watch out, cuz it can ruin your day if you dont know whats goin on "Drone cannot be commanded as it is not actually present."

If 2 ships are in different grids they cannot see each other. They do not appear on each other threath window, for all they know they are in a different universe. The scanner will show the ships though and you can use the scanner to find out how far exactly they are.
However you CANNOT target them, you CANNOT shoot at them. You CANNOT take any hostile action against them at all. (as far as i know) A few patches ago it was possible to use the scanner to target people in a different grid. THAT was the grid exploit. (it was patched out before i heard about it but i can see how that would give a serious advantage.)
So the only thing that remains is the element of surprise. Lets talk about that shall we.
Group A is camping a spot. Group B suddenly warps in so threaths appear all over the place for group A. Now group B has this nice invulnerability timer for 10 seconds so group A can't target them yet.
OR
Group A is camping a spot. Group B moves in from a different grid. Threats appear all over the place for group A. Group B has NO invulnerability and group A can react immediately. Its even worse for group B. When you gangwarp you will all arrive at the same time (if its executed well). If you move through the grid you will enter the new grid almost one at a time making you an easy target for the opposition.
I don't think grids will ever go away. They can be made bigger but that will not solve anything. Gates, stations and belts should be moved so they do not hinder you jumping. (that happened to me in HLW-HP. Half our force jumped and the other half was unable to jump because we were in anotehr grid) Those problems need to be solved and the actual location of NPC objects is the only thing that i see as a bug, the grids are a problem though, but not one you can't evade.
The thing players should do imho is to learn to see grids as terrain with a mountainridge separating grids so you can't see beyond them. Maybe a new feature to store points in space and show them on the display would be great so that 'explorers' can go and map the grid at important places and sell the information ingame.
