World of Warcraft, Everquest II, Vanguard, Dark and Light, Age of Conan, et cetera ad nauseum...
Fantasy is tired and boring. Why are there so many fantasy MMOs, and why are so many more coming out? Are people really going to shell out more money for new eye candy, and yet another sword-swinging snorefest with metrosexual elves and cheesy particle-effect spells?
Your takes on this, please.

I'm pretty much done with fantasy MMOs, but I still play the good single player ones.
What we really need is a medieval MMO, not a fantasy MMO. Something like this, except multiplayer. --------

I have to agree, that game look much more like the sort of thing I'd go for.
The one bit that caught my attention was:

Edited by: arbitrary on 14/07/2006 11:16:12 my beef with fantasy games is the lack of fantasy in them, no pun intended.
The same goes for a majority of fantasy books, while some of the best fantasy books around in terms of creativity are a pure plesure to read through; I would say the same for such games, but I doubt they will ever get passed the publishers anyway.
I actually found WoW insperational in terms of the world, and still do - mostly due to the weave of grey, it gets even better as people miss this over and over again. (the classic unholy guild for the hoard, and the classic holy for the allies being one).
EDIT: as for medieval games, I'd prefer lowfantasy over it.

Looks like Oblivion without the 'fantasy' stuff, quite interesting. Have you played it, any good?
What I would really like to play is a near future shooter MMO, I played Gunz Online but that was just an online FPS where you gain experience and gold, not a 'proper' MMO.

The graphics are kinda poo, but it is quite entertaining. There is a demo, and it might still be kinda cheap in case you want to get the full version. Think I paid 10 euro or so for my "cd-key".

I'm sure when Savage 2 hits no one will be complaing much.
But I agree with all. It would be sweet to see an MMO based off of Thief. Wasn't happy with Thief III though.

I need games that can be explained with some degree of scientific theory.
Some little elf chick that has magical powers or some crap like that aint summin id ever enjoy, neither a sword wielding warrior thingy with lvl 8 strength or wotnot.
Each to there own tho, Beam lasers, FTL Jump Drives, Stargates, Warp drives, Particle weapons etc etc just love the theory behind it More possible than shooting magic out my a$$ anyways --------------------------------------------------------

Taking the Aage of Conan defensive stance here
Conan litterature (which the game is based on, not the Arnie movies) lack the metrosexual elves and magic in the sense of fireballs and crap is not very common.
Now if Funcom can stay away from the usual fantasy stuff then they might have a good and interesting game comming.
On topic I can just agree that fantasy has become to "mainstream". Goblins are the same which ever game you look at them in, not much fantasy left.

Diablo 2 was and is great. And PvP didnt rely on the Fantasy setting/Visuals at all. ---

To be honest I would drop EVE if there ever was a good Open PvP MMO that was a Western But of course it would have to have more than just PvP it would have to have a good PvE and trading side... But think of being a criminal.
Wanted posters in towns bounty's on your head with a real bounty hunter system and maybe even progressing up to the point where you could be a US Marshal. Or be a gambler or shopkeeper or any number of things. But sadly I don't think that will happen any time soon and it would be hard as hell to give up EVE.

I agree with Holo, another game like D2 would be amazing. It was one of the few games that has aged well. _______________________________________________

Wizards, Elfs and all that cack has been overbaked beyond belief.
Sad fact is that people like it though. Look at Lord of the Rings.
