TOR graphics in the Thanksgiving weekend beta were a lot worse than previously, so I'd reserve final judgment until the game is out (early access starts in two weeks). Apparently they distributed the build without hi-res textures and there were some settings problems, too (and obviously AA-ing was fubared). Having played in the beta weekend, I can say that the graphics style is very well done and fits the game nicely.
There is nothing revolutionary about the game... it's your everyday themepark MMO with WoW/EQ mechanics and lightsabers and a BioWare story. Many features are nicely streamlined, like auto-loot, item customization, companions, and crew skills. Space combat is of course an arcade minigame on rails, they said as much from day one. You can upgrade the items of your ship and your companions. The voice-acted story manages to draw you in and care much more about your character. Also, zapping people with force lightning does not get old, whether it's in a torture cutscene or out on the field.
It's not breaking any records but it's a solid game that's shaping up to be the most serious contender to WoW's themepark throne yet. They have something like 1.5 to 2 million pre-orders to date if you count Europe as well, although it remains to be seen how many will stick around. I'll surely draw ire for this but I plan on playing both EVE and TOR for now. They are entirely different experiences, and I like both. |

Due to a silly move by EA, people outside the launch regions cannot buy the digital version and are forced to go through Amazon et al.

The forums are going to be wiped before early access begins, so this is their move now I guess. The timing is a bit suspicious though; it could have waited until Monday. |

Knowing about the other TOR, you naughty boy you. Anyhow, get used to it. There are only so many three-letter acronyms to go around, and TOR is already established within the gaming community as another acronym for SWTOR, and no amount of whining on your part is going to change that. There is a little thing called "context" which helps most people distinguish one TOR from the other, but I'll gladly collect your tears |

That's another nice catch... although the Tor from Tor Books is not an acronym afaik. And that saga will hopefully finish in November 2012, so just in time for the end of our universe. I don't think I'll stand for a "we'll split the last book of the book we already split in three into yet another three pieces". Heads will roll. |

You'll be disappointed then, this game is nothing like SWG. |

AFAIK the sniper rifle / snipe skill has the exact same range as all the other long range skills, 30 meters, maybe extendable to 35 with talents (like some of the inquisitor's skills are). But chances are you will stay in one spot long enough, since being in cover is the only time you can actually use snipe.

too bad everyone exploiting the pvp match bug will be level 50 by the time you log in
their forums are on fire
seems that you can get full xp and rewards for a match timing out due to lack of players
perhaps they should have gone with deleting boot.ini
Turns out today that you can actually level much faster by doing quests than by exploiting this bug. So all those nerdrage tears on the forums were shed over nothing, and there are no level 50s in the game yet (not even 30s as of this morning, tho I am sure someone is dinging 35-40 by now), according to Stephen Reid (who admittedly does not always tell the whole truth).
Hal Safon wrote:Still waiting for my EGA, though not confident it will be any time soon. IMO they should have let more people in today. The rage of the forums is palpable. They went all the way into October yesterday, after doing only the first week on the first day. But the tears on the forums must flow
Barakkus wrote: Guy is streaming himself leveling to 50 or whatever the cap is.
Pretty much a WoW clone.
Cap is 50 right now. TOR borrows heavily from WoW, just like WoW borrowed heavily from other MMOs. The difference is that it's significantly better, which is only apparent when you actually play it. |
