I've decided to finish up with eve. I don't want to make a big thing about it but offer some advice to players and devs.
1) The gap between the new players and older:
This cannot be argued. Yes, new players can compete in some sense, but only in brute force (zerg like tatics). The gap is ever growing, I know this from starting a second account and trying to compete.
2) Scripts:
They exist, i've seen the code and seen them in action. No, I haven't used them. They seem pretty basic, CCP, you need to do something about this, the escrow, mining, hauling scripts are out of control.
I send scripts to devs on a regular basis and never get a response...
3) Alliances:
IMO, they have too much of a part of EVE now. Once level 4's are nerfed (it's coming, don't kid yourself) alliances control most of the money making. Unless you are in 0.0, making isk is a joke.
Throw this around all you want. Low sec is just a joke. It is now coming to the point where a few 00 alliances control most space. you NEED to join these alliances now to make isk/name for yourself.
Those are my 3 whine points. I wish everyone good luck in EVE, Kali holds some gems but I see the newer player pushed back more than ever.
IMO I would hate to be a new player joining this game at the moment, starting from scratch. Good luck with the 1 year catchup. Don't give me the specalize speach either.
Catch ya's around. -=====-

Edited by: Dekiri on 15/07/2006 11:08:32 Very interesting post(not at all btw its neither original nor true nor interesting). Pretty much all your points are invalid except for the script stuff wich i have no clue about, but considering the bullet proof arguments you put up on the other subjects i guess i might as well ignore it completly. The "gap" is of course there and of course it will take time to catch up.. what the hell is your problem ? The average eve player stays 7 month in the game so after that you have already surpassed over 50% of the population.... Once you are playing a bit more then 1 year and have trained for a certain field you are an expert able to compete with anyone.
The alliances part shows that you have really no idea what you are talking about. The ammount of "ffa" 0.0 is just insane and everybody can go to 0.0 to rat and mine or whatever. I would just like to point over to the civilian side of ISS wich are opening 0.0 for everyone and I myself have ratted there before i joined the ISSN and everybody else can do that too. I started living in 0.0 after 2 month playing and have not lost a ship there even... ( i lost a couple ... err many in low sec though). Not to mention that most of 0.0 is EMPTY anyways where you can just go and shoot stuff or mine or whatever...
I would really love if the people posting this stuff would at least try to keep it real =/
Anyways maybe the game just is not for you =)
Btw i am NEVER speaking or trolling on behalf of the ISSN!

Even if all you write is true: you will come back and why? Because EVE might be crap, but other MMOGs are absolutly $hit!!! EVE has one important feature: shiplosses hurt - they really do! In WOW you loose a fight and lost nothing. No adrenaline rush! But in EVE you can feal the arenaline when you see the enemys. You know: i want to keep this ship! If it dies i loose up to several bil ISK! This is why EVE is different to other MMOGs and why it is "good" comapared to other MMOGs.

You are looking at the game from the "must catchup" angle. You can never do that in games like this. All you can do is to try to have fun anyway, without being the best. Its not for everybody.

I've lived in 00 for the last year. You don't need to tell me what it's like. My point is that you HAVE to join these alliances now to get anywhere. Sure, you can try solo it in 00 with some mates for awhile the some of my last corp mates did, but it won't last long.
I don't know how you can ignore the first point of my post. The gap is becoming wider. So, people stay for 7 months... it takes a year to get a good character with t2 bs guns and the skills to fly a bs without using a civ shield booster :P
If the gap is becoming greater, how can you expect people to stay? With rigs coming in and the vast skills required in Kali, how can you expect any newbie to stay in this game? I cannot see it. -=====-

Each and evry game has a period where a new player is at a disadvantage of being a n00b.
EvE just happens to stretch this period out until you get specialzied in a few t2 areas, taking about 1 year, as you said. While this certainly is a burden for new players, it also keeps the game flowing and prevents endless staleness of fully maxed out skills, like this infamous "lvl 60".
To be competitive in EvE you have to put in so much time and thought that you could descrive playing EvE as some kind of work, which makes you wonder why ppl play itin the first place.
But if its like this, and it certainly is, i figure you just need some holidays.

Have fun, and hurry back ! ________________________________________________

You yes, you are fully right. I'm pretty sure i'll be back. This is my break as I'm fead up with EVE atm. But yes, this is the best game i've played online. I just see it going in a direction that seems to be hurting newbies more than it should.
Back when I first joined (2004) it was easy to catch up... now... well, anyone with a clue knows the sorts of skills and experience you need now. It's alot more than when I first joined.
I just cannot see (from a newbies point of view) the reason to stick with this game to compete with the older crew. -=====-

Well the new catching up with the old. True its a progressive game for everyone so, the training never stops.
But you forget that the people in the big shiny ships with all the skill heavy gear had to put the time and effort into acheiving it.
Which the new player can always do. And might I add that a new player can be a very effective t2 frigate/inty/af pilot in not that long.
It forces teamwork.
And yes the big money is in 0.0. Its meant to be that way, and you gotta fight for it. Risk n reward.
Scripts are in every mmo. People will always use em somehow. Stopping them is prolly really hard to do.
You'll be back. you just need a break. The game is like ******, you can quit for a while, but it will always be nagging at you to come back and join the fun again.

I will give you a nice example .. Take the area around KDF for example and a bit into immensea... It is almost dead except for a couple of people at the ISS Marginis station and some huzzah traveling and maybe an occasional IAC or LV. You can rat and mine and do whatever you like without being bothered alone or with a corp. I know that you as goon are probably used to the mess that is syndicate and probably you have not seen much more, but syndicate is really HEAVY populated compared to the rest of 0.0. And for living in 0.0.... you can't really compare SU- + U4 + maybe the travel routes with the rest of 0.0. You would be suprised about some of the other regions in terms of profitable spawns and lack of competition for spawns.
Oh yea.. maybe you should just not play and keep your sp running =) Make sure you keep training skills since you will come back =p

I don't debate that it takes time. I accept that it will take awhile to catch up. I accept you can find people your own level to pvp with, but....
The gap has widened. Seriously, since RMR the gap is huge. Most 00 alliances will not allow you in with a few m sp.
It *will* take you around a year to get a character full rounded to be successful at PVP in and around 00 (low sec etc).
The gap just seems to be getting bigger... -=====-

Edited by: Lifewire on 15/07/2006 11:30:06 As n00b i would try to get into a team that has veterans and n00bs. You cannot expect that you will have the skills of the people that played EVE 3 years. It would be unfair if a n00b can fly all ships after 2 weeks and we "oldies" worked 3 years to get all these skills. So the only solution is to join a corp that has veterans and n00bs. Veterans might sit in the tech II fitted ships or even carriers, but they need you in the smaller ceptors and tech I ships too!
And the best way to get good skills as soon as possible is to specialise on one race. I have 40 mil skillpoints and i can fly nearly any ship in this game. With only 10 specialised mil skillpoints you can be better than i am in a certain thing, for example ceptor or HAC. So the key is: specialise. This is the price you have to pay as n00b player.
You should also not forget that a veteran that trains for a carrier still feels like you: f..k, f..k, why does t need so f.cking long to get this f.cking skill? That¦s EVE - it will never change, even if you sit in a titan...

Yep. I agree. I'm not debating that a 3yr old character should wtfbbq a 3 month old one.
My problem is with newbies getting to that level. They will have such a hard time competeing with older people, even if they specalize in their race, t2 etc.
T3 is just around the corner... what then?
The gap continues to grow... -=====-

Diversity.
Older players go into time consuming toys and skills. Younger players take up role of support, etc. Dont think you can PvP in a gang of all single class ships unless CCP messes up balance and ship role. Battles are won because older players can be freed up tackling role and do more damage dealing and younger players do tackling, intel, etc. The day will come when younger characters can demand wage to do donkeys work like cov ops, etc. In the end, specialisation is the one and only variable for EvE because everything in EvE is based on real time and not game time. ---------------- RecruitMe@NOINT!

In theory yes a vet can solo better than a noob but this is an mmorpg. Teamwork will get you far. In a corp there will be a range of players from vet to noob. As a new player joining a corp you'll get all the support you need.
The problem is we have hundreds of new players that all want to be uber solo pilots. Probably the most successful new guys are Goonfleet because they're a team.
I'm not sure where the stats are but only something like 20 % of the server have over 35 mill SPs. You can only fly one ship and fire one set of guns at a time.

I won't go into detail about specialization because its been mentioned 100's of times before. People still ignore and whine about playing "catchup". Go play UO where you can powergame your character in a month and be as uber as an 8-year vet.

I totally 100% agree.
I'm sorry to say that Eve is overrun by parasites that are making mega $$$ off this game.
Eve Online is by far the EASIEST game of its type to macro. I sometimes believe that mining was specifically designed the way it is to apease the hundreds (if not thousands) of macroer accounts that plague this game.
Quote: 3) Alliances:
IMO, they have too much of a part of EVE now. Once level 4's are nerfed (it's coming, don't kid yourself) alliances control most of the money making. Unless you are in 0.0, making isk is a joke.
Throw this around all you want. Low sec is just a joke. It is now coming to the point where a few 00 alliances control most space. you NEED to join these alliances now to make isk/name for yourself.
This argument has been around since the very early days of Eve. The devs will always favour the big alliances over any other entity in eve. Almost all new content is geared toward low-sec, 0.0, and alliance gameplay. This is the direction the devs want the game to go and always have.
Eve Online is the most un-forgiving MMORPG out there. What other game can you lose 2 years of work/isk in the blink of an eye? what other game can your character be set back months in training time if you forget to upgrade your clone and get killed?
Personally I wouldn't want Eve any other way, the day it goes down the UO track where death and loss is meaningless is the day I leave.
Eve isn't for everyone. You need patience, dedication, stamina, and a thick skin to last in this game. I'm glad the "twitch" gamers get weeded out early on. There's plenty of other games out there for them (actually EVERY other game out there is geared for them). Eve is unique, and may it always be so.

This is good in theory, but isn't what is actually happening.
Most vets that have a few characters. Most dedicate one to getting a capital ship etc. Their main is left for PVP in HAC's or whatever.
Most vets I know atleast, have a couple characters that are quite spread out. So the gap is still there and the vets are still gaining and advantage.

It is not skill only... this is a comon misconception.
You need a core 5-10m sp in basic skills to compete with vets. This is just comon knowledge. I wish you luck with anything less.
SP do matter. You need basic skills trained: electronics, mech, gunnery, etc etc... just the basics to level 4, see how long it takes.
Throw t2 into the mix, specalise...
You will soon get bored being a tackler, let me assure you :) -=====-

There is no end game to Eve. Except for a few die hard fans, 1000's of characters are in the same boat you are in.
And as a two year old character, you above all should know the only thing SP's give you over a "Noob" is more choices in what equipment to use.
As said above your "Playing" in a hot zone...other areas are far better to solo or setup a small POS.
All and all I find this post just another"CCP I demand the right to "Power level" or I leave!!" thread.

Edited by: Valan on 15/07/2006 11:55:03 You can do one of two things to put it right.
Give new players a hand up. Where do you draw the line for a new player? Less than one year? So people over a year old, who've put up with bugs and poor performance and having paid real cash to advance through the game have watch a new guy get everything with no effort?
Or you can nerf old players again why should I be punished for being a loyal customer. How are you going to nerf me, make me start again?
I think people who don't want to work their way through the game will be gone in a year whether you give them freebies or not. I'll still be here in a year, regardless. I've known people who've tried to buy in and they get bored and leave.
EVE is better now on newbies as you need a mixed fleet more than ever now. Gone are the days of the own all battleship.
I think its time to cash in and ebay my char. The guy that buys can see how it easy it is to get nuked with a 43 mill SP combat char.

simply no.
1) Yes there is a gap, but, it's like DS said.
The skill gap is like saying a 3 year old vet is fanstastic and rugby, football, tennis, swimminging and basketball. A new player will have to decide whether they want to be fantastic at one of those sports, or ok at all of them. Specialisation guys! if the new player trains up rugby only, they will be able to stand toe to toe playing rugby. simple as.
2) Scripts, yes, they know. Yes, they ban them. No, they don't shout about it on the forums. They did however just announce that they banned 1000 accounts. Check the link in my sig for details.
3) I kind of see where you're comming from, but it's perfectly right that 0.0 has the most risk, and thus the most reward. Thats why they are so fiercely fought over. It is as easy as you want to make it to go out to 0.0 and make real money. LEvel 4's are overpowered, yes. Sitting in empire (whether it's 1->0.5 or 0.5 to 0.1) and running missions where no one can interupt you (save the gate based missions, and even then you're only danger is from sniper ships), whereas in 0.0 you're in constant paranoia about someone logging on in system or getting an enemy fleet come rushing in and ruining your fun.
Can I have your stuff?
