I went CoH -> WoW -> EVE. CoH was ok, fairly easy to get a group. WoW was damned hard to get a group "your too low to come with us".
EVE? "You only have a frigate? Fit a scram and web, and get your butt outside the station, we leave in 5 mins. You're the scout."
Oh, and guess which game I have stayed in the longest, with no character recycling.... Uhuh...

I can't really comment on WOW because I've never played it. I can't say the graphical style appeals to me much, but if there's nothing more to it than graphics it'd be a shame anyway.
As far as insults go, I think it's too easy to drop into this habit of bundling everyone together into the same... sort of... bundle. Ahem. There are people who want to play the PVP game and others who don't. I don't really go for this notion that you're a 'carebear' if you don't get involved in PVP - sometimes it's nothing to do with 'caring', or any particular objection to PVP. Sometimes it's just because other aspects of the game interest you, or because PVP doesn't. In my case it's not because I think PVP is particularly wrong - it's just that it doesn't interest me and my chars usually aren't trained in that sort of direction. Apart from to provide the PVPers with a free lunch, what point would there be me wandering into =<0.4?
And as people have said on these forums many times before, EVE requires a range of occupations for its economy to survive. If the PVPers weren't getting their ships scrapped every two minutes - or scrapping other people's - the miners and the traders wouldn't make any money. And if the miners and traders weren't mining and trading, the PVPers would at least have to divide their time between fighting and production, and I'd be surprised if some didn't find it lucrative enough to focus on that area specifically and become the new 'carebears'.
Like it or not, we all depend on each other. |

I miss the days where the term carebear didn't have the "insult factor" that it seems to now. You are always going to have people who want to get lots of stuff with no risk of losing it, it's perfectly understandable.
But these days, it's used more as an insult :(
The origin of the term carebear in mmorpgs from wikipedia. For whatever reason in Eve its become entwined with the notion of wanting the game mechanics adjusted in some way to give you an advantage over your foes.
i like how someone gets credit for something that was being used for years by REAL PK's

Impressive, particularly since the game isn't 3 years old yet.
Went live November 2004 if I recall correctly...

Has this become the next big insult, right under carebear?
If you are offended by someone saying this to you, you should be beaten until you are more thick-skinned. Then beaten again for the initial stupidity.

I used to play WoW. I don't anymore because I find it frustratingly simple and limited, especially in the sense of 'when you're levelled up, you raid or battleground. Have fun.'
And I think I can see where the insult comes from. It's essentially short hand for 'go back to somewhere where you don't have to take responsibility for your actions'. Or when someone is quicker to whine for a nerf than learn how to handle the situation ... that screams WoW.
Saying GBTW after killing some miner or another ship in a battle though, that just seems kind of dumb.

EVE players bashing wow kinda reminds me of Slashdot peeps bashing windows/microsoft, I dont take sides, I like both games but I wish these peeps could hear how bitter they sound talking bad about such a popular game, WoW also has alot of cool adult people playing it as well is children. It appears that EVE does have alot less younger players in the community but it has its fair share of idiots playing just like ANY online game.

I still have my WoW account active (started on launch day) and I've done their version of PvP and 40 main raids. It's apples and oranges trying to compare these two games, but there is a different mindset a player there has compared to here. WoW does its art STYLE very well, and PvE is much more substantial than anything EVE has. BUT, I stopped playing WoW because as much PvE there is to do, I got bored of it, and their PvP blows. This game is much more social/political/dramatic, and the PvP mechanics are the best I've ever played.
But yeah, GBTW should be an insult, because the community here is so much better than the one over there.

I played WoW. It is a fun game, but as it focuses on the lowest common denominator (read lots of subscribers and children) it is extremely limited.
My main was in a top end guild; the main goal being to get the best gear before everyone else, which we did for the most part. With the best gear and skills you can then go to the battlegounds and feel pretty powerful. You raid every single night, learn to kill all the bosses, and then farm them. The treadmill goes on and on and on and on..
There is nothing truely dynamic about the game, its simplicty is an invatation all idiots, there are no consequences, and simply there is far and away not the limitless depth, politics, economy, and potential found in EvE. |

That totally misquoted, and the forum messed up my reply ><
Meant to type:
Yeah I totally agree. I played WoW for over 1.5 years, full tier 2 gear, and I quit because I couldn't take the stupidity of WoW endgame anymore. The playerbase is immature, annoying, and relatively dumb compared with EVE. And the group comparison above is so accurate.
Cheers :)

UO was crap in the early days. The thing that makes EVE rock is that its UO early days, But they cant loot your cash and you get money back for the armor you lost.
If UO had been like EVE id still have an account.

It's funny you mention that. The slashdot article on sunday last talking about EVE tv started off with the usual halfwits complaining that EVE is windows only.
It ended up with a dozen or so links to tools to make eve run in linux based systems. And information about how CCP has actively worked with various projects to get it working in *nix systems.
Those guys, and their counterparts here are a waste of bandwidth. The first time someone tells me to go back to wow after killing me is going to find out the meaning of the word griefer.
