EVE's descriptive material about modules and weapons often leaves something to be desired. F.O.F. (Friend or Foe) missiles are alleged to be auto-targeting, but no further explanation is given. I assume that this means that all I have to do to send them on their merry way to take down an enemy is to turn them on. That is, I assume (since they are auto-targeting) that I don't have to lock my target first. Hmmm. Does this also mean that my enemy doesn't have to lock me? I just turn them loose in the sky and they know who they're supposed to hit? Then they must surely be a miracle.

If I remember correctly they only go after targets that have agressed you (incl drones).

They only hit those who have agressed you. They work when ECMed, but are easily defeated by simply light drone zerging

FOFs are tricky to fight with. They are not the AFK weapon they could be.
First off, they are weaker than their reguler counterparts, so not doing as much damage. Secondly they only work when someone or something is SHOOTING at you. LOCKING does nothing, only when you are being SHOT AT, do they fire. If you try to activate your launchers and nothing is shooting at you, you will not be able to fire FOFs. Third, even when being shot at, the missiles will not fire unless there is an agressor in their range. With my current skills, just testing in a Raven, my Light FOFs would not fire until the targets came within 30km, which is their range. And fourth, the FOFs will always target the NEAREST agressor. So if you have 5 frigs orbiting you, chances are that you will hit all 5 and not kill either of them fast enough. You can NOT direct fire on one of them, FOFs pick the target closest to you on their own.
You do not have to be able to lock your enemy, so they are good if you are being jammed, but generally I would say they are not worth it. Unless you plan to use them as pure defence and not offense, do not waste time training them. Too many drawbacks, not enough advantages...

My FOF missiles are strange things. If you lock a target they will ignor it. If you are being locked they some times ignor it. They will target the closet thing they deem bad (so you might want to pick off that cruiser at 60km with your heavy FOF but they will attack the station. They will lock friendly ganged member who have low security status and ignor the bad guy.
FOFs have many draw backs I would only recomend using them for PVE since you don't need to select your targets. The cons out number the pros with these things. Put for PVE they are awesome! ------------------------------------- Sammael's Legion ARCH |

I remember being shot by a friend's fof while I was remote repping him, so be careful (unless it's been fixed, this particular incident happened more than a year ago) _
