Back in when those armored bank robbers were shooting up LA with automatic rifles, the cops had to use an armored truck (the kind used by banks, etc., to move money to/from stores) to rescue a wounded cop.
Also, Doraville is in Atlanta.

"If men were angels no government would be necessary."
This is one of the prominent thoughts of the some of the founders of the US government.
Now, if you add in a population that wants to be protected from societies underbelly instead of protecting their own society, this is what you end up with; a militarized police force meant to subdue any form of unrest.
A well equipped police force, that is operated by significantly underpaid state employees, that have little to no incentive to not abuse their power in numerous ways, is not long for great abuses. That being said, privately paid police forces will often fall victim to the same abuse of powers.....oh mankind you leave much to be wanted for |

Agreed. We do need more cops like that. The police should be interacting with the community not oppressing it with military grade hardware. This vid may shed some light on the use of the hardware though. I was hunting for sick loot, but all I could get my hands on were 50 corpses .............. |

There is an excellent scene, from the HBO serie's The Wire, of the Baltimore City Police chief (I believe) where he speaks of the older days when cops walked the streets with a baton and would communicate with, socialize with and bond with their 'beat' aka the streets and their residents. It has not been like that for a long.
My link does not have the lead up where he speaks of what you linked above Khergit, but what I have linked is one of the main reasons the situation with police forces are as grim as they are now. |

Something that would help return to those days is reducing crime, and not by chasing criminals, but by making less activity criminal. There are countless stories about police harassing people for "crimes" that should not be crimes such as growing vegetables, having a cistern, selling cigarettes one at a time (which was the alleged crime being committed in another recent police killing.) having a lemonade stand, bake sales, stamping the word "liberty" in a round piece of silver, and of course the big one, drugs.
Government creates more criminals with the pen, than does the occasional ill will of man. Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.-á-á- William Pitt |

Think I'd be more concerned if they didn't attempt to retrieve a downed colleague. I see a smoke grenade and 4 people guarding the tracked vehicle while 2 run out and drag a dummy into the back. I don't see them rushing out and shooting pop up targets.

Fact of the matter is that this equipment is rarely used to recover a downed partner. If a situation is bad enough to warrant such response and equipment then the State Police or The National Guard should be called in. Local, relatively small jurisdictions rarely if ever need this type of equipment. This stuff, often times, is excessive in force and excessively expensive for the rare cases that they are needed. |

Nah. Has more to due with state coddling of segments of the population who simply refuse to conform to the rules civilized society sets down.
Its really simple.
-Don't steal cigars and manhandle storeclerks half your size. -Don't walk down the middle of the road and hold up traffic, especially not 10 minutes after committing a crime. -And, for godsake don't punch out police officers, attempt to flee, then turn and bullrush them while they are pointing guns at you.
'Big' Mike whats-his-name dug his own grave, just like Trayvon.
They deserve derision - not pity and memorials.
I'm right there with you on the militarization of the police. Not comfortable with some of the hardware being distributed to civilian law enforcement agencies these days - much of it looks more at home in Iraq or Syria, not Montana or Missouri.
But I'm not sure the riots in Ferguson are really the most compelling context. |
