I've been thinking about this for a while and with the new post about the gamer rehab clinic I thought id ask your opinion. Im 16 years old and have been playing EVE for over a year now. Now im pretty sure that everyone who plays eve and is around my age has had a discussion with their parents about EVE. I know I have.

Now my parents most used argument is that playing EVE is useless and will do nothing for me if i ever want to achive something in live. They tell me to go out with friends... go to a bar or something. basicly they tell me they rather have me drinking myself a headache with some friends instead of me being at home in the living room all evening. (Btw. I do go out with friends and i Do invite them over to my place once in a while. But not every evening.)

I, ofcourse was trying to counter their argument. EVE is usefull. and if it isn't, is drinking beer usefull??? or should i watch TV with my parents, is that usefull??? (they tell me that watching tv with them is better because we can talk and everything.) They are ofcourse not willing to listen to my arguments they're the parents and im the anoying teen afterall

What i want to ask to you people is this: Has EVE, or something you learned in EVE, ever been any use to you?

The first thing i come up with is my english. Im from holland and although i speak with a bad accent. i can speak and understand english pretty well (Im sure that there are alot of grammar and spelling errors all over my post. But my grades at school are among the highest of my year :D ). And im sure thats because i play these online games.

Other than that EvE has thought me to enjoy what i have but dont be surprised to lose it and feel bad about it. My parents dont seem to understand that I dont yell i want this i want that all the time. When they ask me why i dont go working for a better Pc i tell em that this one is fine and id rather enjoy it instead of working my ass off for another one that will be outperformed 2 weeks after i get it by newer models.

Overall i think that a game like EVE can teach people valuable lessons. Not because its such a good game (which it is) but because it puts you in situations that are comparable to rl, except for the whole space pew pew thing ofc. Respect aswell as wealth have to earned (with the exception of the tech 2 lottery
  ).
Ah well after a long long post let me hear your thoughts. Is playing games really that useless?

Thats exactly what i meant yeah. and Ofc i know education, jobs and friends are more important. But its holidays ffs :P lemme play my gamez.

But what if we compare EVE to, for example, WoW. Or any Fps? I think that Eve would teach you alot more than any of these games because of the simply fact that we have a close community and that teamwork is so important.

Maybe alot sooner than 100 years :)

Nice to see so many serious replies :D But its good to see that im not 100% wrong like the ebil parents say ^^ Some good advice in here too. at the moment i am mainly in or around eve/eve forums all day unless i got something planned with friends. I should really be doing some more different things. But when photoshipping its so tempting to just check if there are any nice new threads on the forums. and just checking quickly becomes reading every new post

See if i can get my dad to read this.

About the 16 year old drinking: Yep when i invite friends over for my birthday or something we easily go thru 24 bottles of beer and maybe even something stronger (bacardi) with like 6-8 people. But that doesnt happen very often.
Also ive got alot of friends that already have experience with softdrugs. Its not uncommon in the netherlands :)

And does anyone know a good 3D modeling program to learn the art? It is something i would love to learn.

 haha will do flavius.

Anyways after trying to think objective about my own playtime (which is pretty hard tbh) I am pretty sure that do not spend as much time in EVE as I am behind my pc doing other stuff... Though these forums are nearly always open if im behind it and get regularly refreshed. I dont know what the symptoms for addiction are but im pretty sure im not. I have never put aside anything else thats fun for EVE as i know i can play some other day when i do have time. Cant imagine i would anytime soon.

Think some have a wrong image of me atm. But im a pretty regular guy. doubt I would be classified as "hardcore". Ah well.. tried the dad but he doesnt seem to be interested.

Wow some serious replies here :) thanks again. I even got my dad to read it and he pretty much agrees with the balance thing. Gotta focus more on some other things like my guitar i suppose :)

About the weather here: Is fking hot :P But i get sunburns very quick so i hate going to the beach or anything. My parents probably think i dont go there cause of EVE.

About the 3d modeling: Sweet info :) ill download on of the free programs to see if its my thing. Maybe contact you ingame if i cant figure it out :P thanks
