i have yet to see any setups using a small gun on a big ship and was wondering why, say for instance a small turrent on a cruiser, sure the small does half the damage but it has twice the tracking and rate of fire and you'd save cpu and grid for other things, i realize it would be far less effective against bigger ships but wouldnt it be more effective against smaller ones or am i missing something?

Yes, smaller turrets are better against smaller ships than the usual larger turrents in many cases. However, a webber will make the tracking problem much less severe, and many of the larger weapon classes have a dual or quad weapon with significantly better tracking than the other weapons of its class. There are a number of setups that use smaller guns to leave more space for a heavy tank fitting. You should also note that smaller guns will not get the bonuses for the ship, so they will not be as effective as the same guns on many of the smaller ships.

I know of a certain alliance that likes to fit small guns on their battleships when travelling. They kill lots and lots of tacklers that way.

the loss of a ships bonus is a pretty good reason not to, still i'm suprised that more people dont experiment with smaller guns

can you give me an example set up to look at, just to give me an idea of what the basic strategy or mind set is?

For example, half a dual 250mm railgun is a 250mm railgun

Take a rupture for example:
Throw 4 280 II's on there and a couple of launchers or NOS's and look at the grid you have left. You can throw an awesome HP tank on it with 1600mm tungstons and what not. Your survivability goes WAY up. I see this good as a fleet option to ward of tacklers, AF's and what not. My corp did a small expirement. We took a plated out - small turret rupture and put it up against a med. autocannon rupture. The result was really close. Both into structure and it was the difference of just a couple of shots. Only 1 mill seperated the pilots skills and both were trained all Mimnatar.

The dual and quad variations of medium and large guns should really be dual and quad versions of the respective smaller guns; i.e. a dual 220mm medium AC should be a gun that for each highslot places two 220mm small ACs on your ship, each with it's own (small) ammoclip. And gimp their refire rate and tracking a bit, so they won't become too overpowered versus smaller targets.

hhmmm interesting, especially since i've been spending alot of time in a rupture, although with my current set up i'm not sure what i'd use the extra grid for, maybe a heavy launcher?, my lows right now are 1600 tung rolled plate, voltaic adaptive nano,small armor repair, pdu, and damage control

The blasta-rax (Light Neutron Blaster IIs with 1600mm plate) used to be the best cruiser in the game until they balanced the effect the plates had on smaller ships. It's not quite so popular now but is still a viable setup in some circumstances.

Prolly the pdu because you'll likely not need it with the small turrets.

Some big ships use 1-2 small turrets in solo missions because it's really hard to kill the little ***** interceptors that web you with battleship weapons.
