SUGGESTION:
Add a new class of ships, specifically geared for mining.
** cargo space appraoching that of a titan. ** small powergrid to prevent using pvp weapons ** large enough CPU to allow multiple mining lasers ** weak shields, & armor, although hull might be higher due to size. ** very limited targeting system. 1 or 2 targets max. ** top speed 20-30 m/s ** agility almost non-existant.
This would help solve the Ore-Thief issues, as canning wouldn't be neccessary. Also it would get the battleships out of the ore betls. It's sad to see fleets of combat ships licking rocks.

Edited by: voogru on 05/10/2003 04:10:26 Yes, and we can have people taking out whole fields in no time. Great idea.
I support the idea of a miner ship, but if it had 500,000 cargo mining fields would run low very fast:
I think it should be somewhat like this:
4-6 Hi-slots 0 Med-slots 0 Low-slots
1000 CPU 200 Powergrid
5000-10000 Cargo Space. 1000 Drone Bay (Which can only launch mining drones)
150-250 Hull 250-500 Armor 750-1000 Shield
Enough to survive for a bit, but would require assistance if mining in low sec.
Max speed: 100m/sec.
And, So people cant use it as a indy for hauling other than ore, it has a special "converted" cargo bay which can only carry ore, and due to other "special" limitations it can only carry mining drones and can only be equiped with mining lasers.
Cost should be around 5,000,000 - 7,000,000 depending on type.
just my 2 cents.

So basically you want a better AFK mining ship?

i love the idea but to put it in better prespective a indy with 2 turet hardpoints would be bad arse in my books

DonĘt you think that maybe mining is too profitable compared to pirate bounties and agent missions? As it is if you want make money you mine. ThatĘs it.
Maybe you or your Corp build ships or equipment, but you mine to get the raw material. Its easy, takes less relative time and doesn't require a lot of research to find trade routs or spawn points.
Battle ships are mining because it is so profitable. A simpler solution in my mind would be to make Expanded Drone Bays, so you can put harvesters on Bestowers and such. Maybe make a mid slot mod that turns a one high slot into a turret mount, so you can put a second mining laser on your indy. Yes, now Indies may be able to double as carrier ships, so keep the armor and shield levels low enough that its a bad idea.

...(from a previous post of mine)
I strongly protest the economic ramifications of battleship mining... Battleship mining SHOULD be a waste of Battleship potential. It is currently by far the best use (Pirate farming is another issue that needs to be realistically addressed....)
The best solution to mining that I can see is: Introduce a mining ship under the Industrial category. These ships should be moderate cargo, low hull & shield, moderate speed, 2/4 mining lasers depending on class. Eventually there should be a way for such ships to form a link with an industrial hauler and ębeamĘ the cargo straight to it.
You would completely remove the mining capability of all combat vessels including the newbie frigate. You then break the newbie frigate into 3 different options depending on the school you chose. - Military starts with a slightly more combat oriented ship. - Science and Business: Fast, little cargo ship (ie: 2x cargo of Military) - Mining: actual mining vessel.
Yes, this would be a drastic change ū one that is necessary.
The side effects include team operations (security/hauling/mining) become more necessary/profitable than solo/afk mining etc. Battleship minerĘs whinging a bitą The infamous Alliances would certainly be significantly impacted by this changeą but ultimately for the better.
I tell you, one of three things will happen. 1. Nothing will change. 2. Every ship will gain a ęminerĘ slot (in conjunction with turret and missile slots) 3. My post above or a variation thereof.
(PS: Option 2 is the cheats way out)

Ris Dnalor: I do not endorse AFK mining ships. Consider the economic impact of everybody having access to the kind of ship you describe... First and foremost, all 0.0 systems would be empty by the end of the first day. eh, i dinnae mine afk, I do however read the boards whilst mining. I see your point, & agree with it. I still feel, however, that battleships shouldn't be the end-all be-all when it comes to mining. -- Jump Drive Operation / Rank 5 / SP: 1280000 of 1280000

Should make indys only ship able to carry mining lasers with a couple of lv5 indys able to carry 2 mining lasers and maybe a couple of drones. And make pirate bountys higher even for low pirates.
And maybe actually make it worth while trading? and hauling ?
in fact split indys into 1)fast indys with no mining lasers and good manoveravlity 2)slow indys with mining lasers and bad manoverability
so you have ships that are good for trade and hauling and then good mining ships.
how about only one ship per character ? that would certainly make things more interesting and force economy to be more dynamic

Add a skill that lets you mod your Indy, to add a mining only turret to the indy at the cost of cargo space. Make the prerequisite Mining V so that only ppl who spend time training in mining can do it. <shrug> Works for me. Then any serious miner can put expanders on his ship, and add one laser to his indy.. just a thought

I have been thinking this for some time. I think we should have a seperate 'indy' class ship for mining, even going up to a large ship that includes refine as well as mine. (like a large deep space fishing ship in RL). BUT these ships at this level should be VERY expensive.. They are after all an investment for a bussiness..
I also think that ALL cruisers and BS, should not be able to fit mining lasers. Full Stop. They are after all Battle ships. And as such should only be able to fit weapons on.

Roger Welco, i think your idea about BS's not having miners is too drastic and silly as BS's are sometimes bought by people as mining ships...other than that i think the idea of mining ships is good

I think like roget, cruisers and BS, shouldn't be able to fit mining lasers. there are combat ships.
the class ship specification give by Ris Dnalor is good for me. i add only one thing, this class of ship can only fit one fighting turret and one missile hard point (to use defenders at least).this will add more strategy in mining operations on low sec system.

What about a sort of uber indy, but you can't change the setup - ie it has no turrets but comes with loads of miner I (or II) built in? So you can only use it for mining...

BS's aren't combat ships they are top of the line mining vessels or rat farming platforms. Get a clue dudes!! Why do you think PK's resort to the lag trap exploit as the preferred method of warfare. It isnt' because of the joy of face to face combat which would exist if BS's really were combat vessels. Golly Gee
