I've got this newbie corp - the corp is like 2 weeks old, all of the members are 0.x security rating. In essense, we're nobody - mining omber and occasionally doing some low-sec mining. Gankings etc. in lowsec are part of the game and we accept that - our corp charter actually forbids smacktalk or hatemails, because the risk in lowsec is that it, well, won't be secure. So it goes...
That changed a couple of days ago - we got a concord mail that Generation Terrorists had wardeced us. Who? Huh? Mrs BlueSky and Leogassia are the only members. Through various conversations, they claim to be alts of some uber-huge corp, that someone's ****ed at me/us/one-of-us, etc etc. I find it impossible to parse the BS from truth with them, as I'd expect from a couple of mercs. Now, first they claim they're hired to do some objective against us they can't disclose from an undisclosed client. Then they say my corpse ends the wardec. After they get it, Leogassia says my corpse was worth 500 mil to someone. O RLY?
Now, BlueSky is telling my corp members alternately that she won't end the wardec without 50 mil (which we don't even have a quarter of), or that it's up to Leogassia to continue the war.
So, really, WTF is all this? Seems like griefing to me - we're nobody and have nothing that these people want (unless they really want Miner 1s to fit on their battlecruisers). If it is a serious grudge on the part of some char who took offense at something one of us has done (really unlikely given the nobody-ness of all of us), then let's have that person come forward and at least state the nature of the offense. Otherwise, it's pointless griefing.
So yeah, we got nothing, but could really use a hand sorting all this out.

Wardecing and extorting new corporations is a perfectly legal way of making isk in this game. What you can do about it is fight back, disband the corp for a while till they give up, find some friends to wardec them and kick their behinds.
I'm not gonna go into the "griefing or not" discussion of it, because just about everyone has different definition of griefing and I think it's pointless.

Here's things you can do:
A) Get podded. If your corpse really ends the war and you don't have any implants on, the only cash you end up losing is your clone and a shuttle, which are practically worthless.
B) Fight. If you think you and your corpmates can defend yourselves, go ahead and hunt for the enemy. But I don't think this'll be the case here...
C) Take a vacation. Stay docked for a week - that's the length of a war if you don't declare it mutual. Take that opportunity to get manufacturing and refining done, sorting out your hangar and cleaning up the corp hangars and documents. You know - desk jobs.
D) Move somewhere else. My favorite anti-war tactic. Simply pick up your ship and go do your business elsewhere for a week. The enemy will be hunting for you in HQ and its immediate surroundings, so the farther away you go, the lesser your chances of getting killed. I did that during my last two wars and I didn't even see one enemy ever enter local. Eventually, once you get the skills and money, you'll learn to park industrial ships at several remote stations, where you'll be able to retreat and mine or rat there at your leisure 'till the war's over.
I generally see no point in going through the trouble of wara-decking a young corporation. Either the enemy is really a merc corp, or (more likely) a pirate corp that prays on newbies in order to cause them to break down and cry. Just keep your mouth shut in local and you'll be fine. You don't want the corp to get a crybaby/carebear reputation, otherwise this'll incite more wardecs from even more pirate corps.

Already got podded. That led to a host of apparently-conflicting stories on the part of the attackers. And as it happens, I really _am_ going on a vacation next week - long planned trip to take my kid to disney, but I'd like to leave knowing the heat is off my corpies.
OT: Why the heck doesn't my ugly mug show up on these posts?

You're being extorted, pure and simple. Somebody noticed your little cuddly group of newbies mining, and decided they wanted to try and kill you for the sheer fun of it. The GM's are not going to help you because of 'grief' tactics, they're not here to hold your hand. The faster you realise this, the faster you'll begin to enjoy the game.
At this point you have three options:
#1: Disband the corp and sit mining in the NPC corps, crying about how you got grieved out of your corp.
#2: Sit docked in a station forever untill the warring corp gets bored and retract the war. Don't count on it though, since war dec's are 2m a week, and they'll probably keep it going forever.
#3: Step up and claim your place in EVE. In short, go out in Tech 1 frigs and destroyers and blob the two alts to hell. Unlike any other MMORPG out there 15 lvl 10's (Ofcourse there are no 'levels' in EVE, but you know what I mean) can actually kill players with a lot higher lvl of skills. Tech I frigs and destroyers is basically free after the insurance payout, so just go out and don't be afraid of dieing.
I hope you know which option to pick out of these three.

End of story.
Thanks to all who replied. So anyhow, we did fight, and we sure as hell got our asses handed to us - not all of us are miners, either... but it was pretty gnarly against even one of these guys. Oh well - win some and lose some - I had some pilot flee my ruppie deep into structure a few days ago after he tried to gank me as I was ratting in lowsec. Not this time. Couldn't even lock my opponent  All that happened last night right before the whole confusion about what all the warring was for.
Anyhow, I sent their CEO an evemail asking for clarification on all the above, and she ended up replying to the effect of "We're not mercs - someone hired us to gank you for smacktalking in local." Okay... but she did withdraw the wardec. Still wondering who took offense and why - seems kind of silly to exhibit that kind of force for offense without even saying what the offense was. But oh well - I can take my vacation and let my corpies do what they will now. And they all have a better idea of what a wardec is like - part of the game

A friend of mine, who i shall not name, Recived some nasty smack talking from you and your corp in local, I myself hate smack talking so my corp thought it would be a nice way to teach you a lesson by declaring war on you corp and killing you abit. No were not mercs... No were not greifers... We just hate seeing language like that in local, especially when its directed to a friend.

The real story? I find that amusing. First of all, none of our members (Well, besides Taupe maybe) were swearing or whatever in local. As a general rule.. we don't even pay attention to local in high sec.
Look at it from our point of view. We get on and someone has wardec'd us. We hear a few different things as to the reason. I only hear about "local" towards the end. War goes active and Leo camps outside the station we hang in. We chat a bit and he says that until we all die the war will go on. I'd have NO problem sitting in a station for a few weeks. This game isn't my life so I'd go do something else until the war was over. Leo did seem pretty cool and a few of us were bored.. so we went out and fought. Yeah, we lost.. badly. :D By the end of the day all of us had died at least once.. even Taupe. We were told that the war was over and would be ended when Mrs. Bluesky got on. ok, coo.
A few hours later Mrs. Blue pops into our non-corp chan going "WRAR" (lol). I tell him that we all died and he's like.. "and?". I NOW find out we have to pay 50 million or the war lasts two weeks. WTF?! Now can you see why Taupe made that post. The whole thing seemed a bit odd.
You know. in the future maybe said party should actually talk to Taupe before getting ****y and having someone wardec the whole Corp. He's a VERY mellow guy and I doubt he really meant any harm. Hell, he prob would have said sorry right there. Myself on the other hand.. prob not. ;)

It makes me happy that everything seems to have been worked out in the end, as station wars do suck badly, but it makes me very happy to see another group of new players choose the fight back option. The sooner one learns that bit of Eve, the sooner the game opens up and becomes its full potential.

He smacktalked someone, they contacted me.. we declared war.. The contract was placed, becuase the ceo guy smacked someone down in local..

I'm getting confuzed. Ohh and at "wait a week, that's how long it is if it's not made mutual"
Is this a new implementation that I have not heard off ? Last time we had an active war it was NOT mutual at any point and lasted around 6 weeks. It's called not forgetting to pay bills.

Interesting. I logged on just know only to find out that GT has wardeced us once again. I would appreciate some sort of response from either member of GT either on these forums or via an eve-mail as to the reason for this second unwarrented (imho) attack on the same newbie corp. Taupe is still on vacation, so it's myself that you will be dealing with until his return. Thank you for your time, and please note that I am trying to remain as civil as possible.
