I'm far from a tech wizard, so this question may be coming from a very uninformed viewpoint.
1) The last few times the eve servers fell over, the eve status twitter page linked to a forum post. Given that the forums have been down each time as well, all this leads to is irritated people tweeting at eve status that the forums are down as well... Is it possible to also post the information to the eve online g+ or directly to the twitter page or similar rather than referring users to an inaccessible forum page?
2) For whatever reason, Eve seems to be suffering a lot more DDOS attacks this year, some which have lead to it being down for huge amounts of time. Is CCP actually doing something in the "back end" to DDOS proof the gerbils?

Huge amounts? Thats probably the most hyperbole definition of a couple of hours compared to the 30 days online status i've ever read this far. Seriously, this is just bonkers. The Servers get DDoS'd and go down for a couple of hours and some people almost die because of withdrawal symptoms.

Fair, perhaps it's an over dramatic term being used. I didn't even try to log in yesterday, but I heard reports of it being down for several hours. There was an entire weekend it was down earlier in the year if I recall, it was DDOS'ed in June. Perhaps the phrasing of "huge amount of hours" was poor, but I don't think the question "you guys seem to be getting more DDOS love than you used to, are you doing something about it?" is invalid |

I found one recent attack against Amazon's ISP lasting about an hour, and one recent attack against the ISP which was hosting Microsoft's Japanese domains accidentally caused by Anonymous protesting Japanese whaling.
That's it. Neither one of these attacks directly took down the bulwarked web portals of either Fortune 50.

In both cases, their ISPs were successfully attacked. Amazon nor Microsoft are in charge of hardening their respective ISPs. After the security event in Japan, btw, Microsoft changed their ISP. There's real reasons why your Eve character doesn't do /dance. |

Yes, a few hours can be a huge amount of time to some people.
For instance, if EvE suffered no time down because of DDoS attacks in 2013, then the amount of a few hours down time so far in 2014 could be considered huge to some people . On the other hand, if EvE suffered 5 days of outages in 2013 to DDoS attacks, then the few hours suffered so far in 2014 would be considered minor by most people.
And another example, losing electricity once a week, a few hours at a time, would be considered by most people to be a major problem, but in some parts of the world this is normal. In most areas of the western world, losing electricity for only a few hours a year can make people really upset. So, it depends on what you are use to and what you expect.

As for DDOS attacks, it sounds like we're fairly in agreement here. They're impossible to prevent completely, but the defenses against them do work and are expensive. In addition, implementing those measures takes time and money. There do seem to have been an increase in effective DDOS attacks on eve servers this year, but I don't actually have numbers behind that. Defending against DDoS is difficult. I got the impression that there were players logged on on yesterday although the log on was unreachable. That would mean that partially the changes they did some years ago help to improve the situation. I always thought it should be possible to do more. There must be a quicker way to discard and temporarily block connections not originating from an EVE client. Or even better, from an EVE client who did not had a successful log on during the last seven days. When times are tough, work with priorities.
Still, we can do our own part of the security game. How many of you are behind a properly configured firewall? You checked that your router (even if it was supplied by your ISP) is secure? And do not get me started about WinXP downloaded from a warez site.
On the internet, you can be whatever you want to be. It is amazing that so many people chose to be stupid. |

Suuuuuuure some ISP - any ISP - is going to pass up the opportunity to handle the Amazon account. Dream on, yo.
Not enough for me, so I checked it out on LexisNexis. More than predictably, Amazon has sued its various ISPs dozens of times. There's real reasons why your Eve character doesn't do /dance. |

On the other hand if you don't have a problem conceding points about misused words, go for it. Pretty much in agreement on all counts. I think CCP's best defense against the recent DDOSing is probably the boredom of the idiots who are doing it. They'll get tired of picking on the same target and move on. |

I think you are the kind of person who didn't feel a slight twinge when the Oxford English Dictionary added a new definition under the word 'literally' to allow the use of the word to mean 'figuratively'.
If that's not clear, then let me put it this way: the way that you use and abuse words and sweep the actual meanings under the rug when it's convenient for you implies to me that you are not a clear, careful thinker. It undermines your credibility. It causes me to question the rigor you apply to things like finding evidence to support your argument, interpreting that evidence, and yes, it causes me to wonder if you really know what you are doing when you actually create that argument.
The semantics and word games are important here because--whether you realize it or not--your point rests on the idea that the word 'never' actually means 'almost never'. Those two things are not the same idea.
The fact of the matter is that if you say that Amazon and Microsoft almost never go down due to DDoS, then you have a precisely equivalent situation with EvE. EvE almost never goes down due to DDoS. That's a matter of numbers and statistics that don't really have much to do with opinion. By any reasonable definition, EvE almost never falls over from DDoS. I don't know the exact numbers for 'unexpected downtime due to bandwidth overflow' for EvE, and I don't know what those numbers are for Amazon or any other major web service provider. But I would bet that they are similar. It almost never happens.
So what we have here is a situation where your sloppy definition of the word 'never' is the sole basis for claiming that a problem exists at all. In my opinion, this is a crap-tastic way of defining a problem. You don't want Tippia to care about words because using a specific word the way it was intended completely eviscerates your point. In a situation like this, I'm always going to agree with Tippia. Though there are things about which we don't always agree. Frankly, I think there are probably things I'm saying in this post that Tippia will disagree with. Because that's how it goes.
The bottom line so far is that the meaning of words is far more important that you suggest.
The rest of the problem with what you are saying in this thread and many others is that few--and I mean 'almost no one' (see what I did there, where I qualified an absolute statement to allow for the fact that some truly incompetent people exist? Yeah, that's credibility gold, baby.)--people who have even a tangential interaction with network security for web apps and services think of DDoS in the way that you do.
A web service is a nail, and anyone with sufficient motivation can find or create or rent or buy a hammer big enough to smack it for a while. That is a f****** fact. Anyone who says otherwise is completely and totally full of marketing crap from companies who sell snake oil and anti-malware stuff.
I don't think you are a network security person. You've hinted in other threads that you do this professionally, but I don't think that's the truth.
I'm a backend software developer for a company that does payments processing. When you buy stuff online, there's a reasonable chance that my code helps get money out of your bank account and into the seller's bank account. When you get a paycheck direct deposited into your bank, that's actually more than likely to be us.
We have network security people, and I work closely with them. When our systems go down (which is ALMOST NEVER), we have to figure that stuff out. EvE is a game. People's paychecks are serious business.
Those are my creds. I'm calling BS on every aspect of what it is that you are claiming about DDoS. I work with and around DDoS every day of my professional life. I think you are full of self-serving, mis, dis, or un -informed junk. I think that you are straight up making things up about this situation, and I think you should just shut the **** up.
