Would not all the cloning technology and the ability to transplant concious thought lead to the developement of immortal life, and if so, wouldn't that make all pilots immortal, as they could simply have their concious supplanted into a younger version of themselves, hence eliminating the need to recruit new pilots, as their concious can simply be stored apon death, and be supplanted into a clone of themselves which are ready and waiting apon the pilots termanation.

Yes, pod pilots are essentially immortal, excepting the rare case of a clone failure (which isn't implemented in game, but is occastionally used in news events and backstory). There is high enough demand for pod pilots that there will still be plenty of need to recruit new ones for the forseeable future. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

You can die out of your pod, you can die if the cloning process goes wrong, you can die if the memory transfer is interrupted, you can die if your clone contract is terminated...
I'm pretty sure you can die of old age, too, as your mind-state deteriorates. -------------------------------------------------- A Storm is coming... |

Outisde a pod we die like anyone else. inside a pod were virtually immortal. Pod malfunctions do happen (bad clones) so we loose sp. Age is irrelvent, we can clone into a young clone. SO as pod pilots, we are virtually immortal and slowly going insane. _____________________________________ Stressed out with empire politics?

Cloning is finite. At some point your mind gives out (as each time you are cloned a little bit of yourself is lost) and ceases to be "you".

I guess you become less and less what you were each time you die in a pod.
However, the technology exists to scan pilot's minds outside of the pod. It's fairly reliable to transmit your mind-state, however it's been disapproved of because sometimes it doesnt kill the old body merely put it in a vegetative state.
Essentially in the pod there's a system that scans you and kills you the second the pod skin is breached. When this happens you're going to die and it's with 100% certainty it wont leave any "yous" as living vegetables.
However, with the infomorph psychology released on the market. I believe that we've ceased to be human and are now digital entities that are downloaded through subspace into our bioshell bodies.

I think over cloned pilot's technicly "Die". If you lose enoth memory your dont go insane. You just cease to be you. Get cloned enoth and you end up with a different personality. Different memories. etc etc. That id consider death. You< not longer exist. Their is someone else that just look's like you

I know people that get cloned fairly often and show no signs in insanity, and I know people that get cloned very rarely and are totally off the bat. I don't think much of this "each time you get cloned you lose some of yourself" stuff.

The correct term would be post-human. Pod pilots are post-humans, evolved to a new state of existence, similar to but removed from our original human state.

Still we have to take genetic degradation into effect. In essence every day your DNA becomes more and more corrupted until it can no longer function. Not to mention the problem of the limited maximum amount of times your cells can divide (due to a built-in kill mechanism. Basicly its some sort of protein at the ends of the chromosomes that's worn down everytime a cell divides). If we simply eliminate every disease and organ failure, then a human could become 130-140 years old. If we're able to disconnect the cells self-destruct mechanism (by somehow cloning ourselves to a factually younger host), then we could perhaps double that limit, or even tripple it. Beyond that you require some really advanced cell therapy to slow down/reverse the genetic degradation. Something which I think isn't really developed in EVE, or its cutting edge technology (I think I remember something about the Amarr practicing some form of rejuvenation techniques). The Jovians might have it.
Still, I definitly wouldn't call pod pilots in EVE immortal, not even close.

Does that imply anything for the Amarr view of Religion and faith? Especially considering the heavy physical emphasis that Amarr theology seems to place on things?

more important is since people can exit the pods, if you really wanted to off a pilot you just have your hitman wait in a station they are headed too and shoot them there. or some freak stargate accident maybe even accidents while in warp. does the transmitter for the brain scan work while jumping or warping?

Re the DNA degradation thing, I thought the whole point was that our clones aren't grown from our tissue, they're built out of biomass, so theoretically you could argue that we are organic automatons with copies of human brains. ----- Visible Implants - good for so many occasions |
