Edited by: Cruise on 20/10/2003 00:16:42 See that little magnifying glass down at the bottom of the screen, next to your ship's autowarp button? That's a system scanner. It's a useful little tool to give you a decent breakout of the system you're presently in. Here's a couple of things not everyone's aware of:
1. You can use the far left tab for a quick breakdown of what's readily known about the system, sorting by the Name of the areas in the system, the Type of areas and finally the Distance of each item in relation to where you are at the time you perform the check. All very basic, all very useful.
2. Skip to the Range tab and now you can get a real view of the immediate areas, including the billboards, stations, sentry guns, npc pirates in the asteroid belts, individual asteroids, secure cans people leave behind, npc kill cans floating in space AND player ships (including the name and classification of ship - i.e. frigate, cruiser, etc.)
The default range is 1000 km. By adding another 0 to the range setting you increase the range proportionally. You can safely increase the range to 2,000,000,000 km, which I believe is 2 au (correct me please if I'm wrong).
There is a scanner maximum distance that will show up if you put in a figure like 3,000,000,000 (I'm at work right now and the exact figure alludes me. You'll see it if you do try to push the limit too far).
Whenever there are many objects that are being scanned you will find sometimes you'll have to wait a good while before the information shows up. Be patient! Some systems have a MASSIVE amount of celestial bodies, stations, secure and non-secure cans, etc., present and it takes time for the database to retrieve it all.
Those of you who are getting that little light bulb going off over your heads will quickly realise how useful this portion of the scanner can be .
3. The last tab deals with direction. You can pinpoint certain items in the system using this. I won't saturate you with details, but this portion of the scanner is SO useful it boggles the mind, yet it's one of the most underused items I know of in the game. I'll leave it at that.
Anyone interested in more information concerning good techniques for use of the scanner evemail me or contact me in game.
Hope that helps!
