I have an idea that shuld appeal to all who wuld like to look around in ship*****pit;
Allow creation of an NPC (non pod) character. It wuld be somewhat diffrent to PC character in many aspects;
He wuld get experience for actually doing things. Like 1 SP for 1 minute of using something "passive" (like 1 minute of flying a frigate) or single use of something active (like shooting a laser). So, if You play 6 hours a day, You wuld have a frigate 3 in 3 months, wich is quite balanced with real life driving skills.
If Your ship dies, Your character dies permanently. On hull damage, You have some chance of dying permanently.
You can view space from ship*****pit and only from ship*****pit.
Using any module or any maneuver, wuld have a delay and show crew interaction like; now: You press laser 1 "You make XYZ damage to ABC ship" NPC char: You press laser 1 "Fire laser 1" 1 second "Aye aye captain" 3 second "Laser 1 reday to fire. Fring laser 1" 4 second "It seems we hit him!" Naturally, this shuld not stop You from fiing 8 lasers at one time, You have 6000 crew for that.
Instead of ship parameter readouts, You have info like; "Captain, we're baing hit, aaaaarrhg!" "The armor is goig down ... badly! Captain, do something, we all gonna die!" "The reactor is overloaded, we're running out of capacitor, estimate cap dryout in 40 seconds!"
Instead of overview, You get info like; "Seems like some ship approaching from the left, probably a battleship, about 60 to 80 km away!" "OMG, there's so many of them." "Oh no, ship with a pod pilot is comming, run for Your lives!"
-----
This exciting experience wult teach people respect, sympathy, compassion and understanding for NPC rats and their heroic effort to suvive in space.

You know, I must admit that when I read "XP per action" and "cockpit view" in the same post, my head almost exploded. If you had somehow stuck something like "this will solve instas as well" in there, or maybe "the fix for gate camps", I would have probably died.

I would actually favour an implementation much like rl fighters have, fly by wire, virtual instrumentation hud etc etc etc

Oh, and btw, why would flying without a pod lead to perma death? Are pods and clones associated with eachother somehow?
If you die without a clone as it is, you just lose SP's, no your entire character....

Nope, the pod pilots have clone because every pod has the ability to scan your brain when you die, by CONCORD law. The loss of SP is due to the insufficiant quality of your clone, leading to losses of memory.
That king of installation is impossible in normal ships, so when you die, you don't have clone: perma death

Maybe in normal ships they have lots of escape that are too small to hit since they don't require all of the extra machinery for brain scans.

Your character is NEVER without a clone. You may forget to pgrade Your clone, so You get a standard crappy clone, that ensures Your 30k skillpoints and also memories and conciousness, that is represented by character remaining in the hands of player (if clone wuld change personality, it culd as well be played by another person :)
When You die, Your pod scans Your brain and sends results to clone. No other technology can do this, only the jovian, super high tech wonder, available on open market only for last 3 years - pod.

Ummm, fffff, ok, I can controll myself, I wont do this. I'm not a murderer. This will not solve instas :) Nor gatecamps. This is not even an idea for regular ameplay, only so people culd try something diffrent and extrem for 1 day and then better understand situation of those poor NPCs :) Well, this doesnt even needs to be ingame, movie wold be enough :)

Hey, I'd actually find this funny. It's far, far too much programming effort to actually happen, but it'd be funny. :) Originally by: Dinilysia Are pods and clones associated with eachother somehow?
Yeah. You can clone because the pod contains brain scanning technology that can copy your mind to the clone via faster-than-light communication. There are various very good reasons for which this cannot be done without a pod, check out the scientific articles in the backstory section if you're interested. -------------------- Do you have a solution to the BM and instas problem? i'm against any form of changing the basic structure of eve and how you command your ship, mainly because it wouldn't work, its not in the slightest bit realistic no matter how much you tweek the current laws of physics plus anyone using it would have a distinct disadvantage of to people using the normal system.why let a human do what a computer can do better.... -------------------------------------------------- [INSIN]erate you foes

There are crews and there are non-pod captains in this universe. We all slaughter them en masse without mercy.

I'm enlightened.
However, in an rp sense it wouldnt be much of an effort to have the memory store transfer hardware ability of the current pod developed into something you could just carry on your belt.
Anyway, immersion ftw, whatever it might be for each n everone.
