Myself, like many others, have been having problems with 3-4 sec periods once or twice a minute where they game would just freeze up. I tried disabling my audio, updating my audio drivers, and even downloaded the new timing patch from AMD for their processors and none of that worked.
Long story short: Disabling your page file appears to eliminate these freeze up periods. Warning though, only disable your Windows page file if you have enough RAM -- 1gb of RAM should be enough for EVE, but if you run other RAM intensive games you may run into trouble. I have 2gb RAM FYI.
I decided to try disabling the page file when I realized the type of freezing I was getting appeared to be from shoddy game code that wasn't properly "multi-tasking" and instead word on the forums is that during these freezes the CPU is nearly 100% idle. So I figured this was probably some type of caching the game was doing. So by disabling your page file the game has no drive space to cache to and Voila! :)
Adding the advancedDevice=1 and setting your buffer size higher in the prefs.ini like the original FPS poster said is also something you really want to do. Otherwise the game by default is only set to 80mb. Setting the buffer to 512 or 768 for 1gb systems and 1024 for 2gb systems will also really improve your overall gameplay.
Be advised that this will only affect the freezing from this buggy game caching -- any choke ups from a slow graphics card/CPU is your problem ;) Coming out of warp seems to always be a bit jerky even on a really good computer. |

To access your Windows page file do the following:
Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. Under that window choose the Advanced tab and click the Settings button under the Performance heading. Select the Advanced tab once more and you should see the last heading in that window says Virtual Memory. Choose Change and you should see the option in that window to select No Paging File. A restart is then required and you are set.
Let me know if this works for you please :)

Hmm =\ You're sure it's this freezing problem and not just general lag ups from a slow computer?

i get it when i logon, hangs for 2 miuntes on the handshake,
now i got a AMD 3700+ xp san diago 2mb cache @ 2.6ghz 1 gig of corsair XMS cl2.5 ram Saphire ATi X800 GTO2 @ X850 XT 160 GB SATA II Western Digital.
and it hangs at 100% cpu idle on the handshake.. its very annoying.
think ill give the OPs advice a go, good luck people

Hmm, well it seems we have multiple times that people are getting freeze-ups, so YMMV :) But the one I was specifically addressing was the in-game lag that would happen 1-2 times a minute for like 3-4 seconds no matter what you were doing.

i've been suffering from the same issues but mine seems to be a bit worse (freezes for longer periods then eventually locks up completely) and my cpu use is generally 100% idle as well.
I disabled the page file and so far my lag seems to have been solved (knock on wood)
thank you so much for this tip....omg I hope this fixs it. and the funny thing is that my "good" system has his problem and my 3 yr old systems has no problems (runs like a champ... aside from a little video issue since my vid card is on it's last legs)
systems specs if anyone cares for reference sake:
asus a8n-sli premium amd x2 4400 2GB corsair xms 3200pro xfx 7800gtx 2x 74gb raptors striped M$ xp pro sp2 blah blah blah.

The page file is space on your hard drive that your computer uses to store things in case of not having enough RAM to fit it all into.
The problem is that programs frequently end up putting things into the page file even if you have enough RAM. And EVE seems to have some kind of bad programming that causes it to stop doing everything else while it is putting information into that page file. So by turning it off if you have a lot of RAM, you can stop EVE from storing information outside of your RAM :)

Edited by: VCBee 909 on 08/08/2006 09:50:20 It may work (until you run out of memory due to all the memory leaks), however there is certain irony in this . Increase the Eve buffer so that you can trust CCP/Eve to handle the memory and caching better than Windows ?
Unless you have 2 GB then I would not even think about this. I've seen EVE take over 2 GB of memory due to the leaks.

Both myself and a friend are having these symptoms. Turning off the page file did not help. He has 2 gigs of ram, I have two.

We would both really like to figure out what is going on here as it is really damaging to gameplay.

From the best that I can tell, there must be multiple things causing the lag ups then. Because this works for some and not others. Which means there must be multiple things you must tweak to get it to work, or you are comparing a different type of freeze up.

What really confuses me about this issue is that the symptoms tend to indicate a memory leak, yet not everyone experiences it. Admittedly I'm not very programing savvy, but in past games that have had such issues, most everyone seems to experience them.
I wonder what is going on.

Hmm this explains why I never got any of the weird "Freezing" stuff that I see everyone complaining about.
I disabled my paging file the day I installed windows.

A group of us had the same issues, but we would use multiple accounts from the same install (over someone elses house, or dual boxing, or whatever) and we fixed it by clearing out the eve cache. On top of that those of us with multiple accounts installed two instances and the lag has gone away for ever. It appears eve.exe gets confused when the cache is too cluttered with different accounts. __________________________________________ -= We Fly for our people =- -= I fly for Blood =- |

bah... i hate this. my lag and lock ups are back :(
disabling the age file worked for a day or two. I clear my cache pretty regularly everyother day or so. no my question is how do you install two versions of eve? I tried to install another and the installer wouldn't begin unless I deleted the old one.
