Heya everyone!
I'm pretty much a total newbie at the game so far (only 350k SP), but I've spent almost all of my time in the game in lowsec so far.. It's just a lot more exciting (yup, I've been popped, podded, ransomed, etc, which was how I came by these rules.. It's all part of what makes lowsec fun )
I'm sure the others here know a lot more about how to survive around there, but in case any other newbies like myself wander down to lowsec, I've got a little set of rules that I follow that have kept me from being popped/podded a lot more, and might help others out that are alone, roaming down into the bad part of town: COALMINES (for lack of the ability to make a better word out of those letters )
Convo - If you get trapped by a pirate and want to pay ransom for your ship, YOU convo them.. Say you want to pay ransom, ask how much, and pay it. They'll prolly keep shooting you as this goes on, so make it quick!
Overview - Everyone's a possible enemy until you know their not (and sometimes even then)... Someone comes up on overview and you're not prepared for a fight, gtfo immediately (even if it's to another asteroid belt)!
Align - Especially for bigger ships like mining vessels, keep yourself aligned towards someplace to warp to.. Just double click near it so your ship is pointing towards it. It can take FOREVER for bigger ships to align, so you can warp a lot faster if you're already aligned.
Local - Check EVERYONE that appears on local, including sec rating and bio - Knowledge is everything when hanging out in dangerous territory. Remember that sec rating doesn't necessarily make someone a pirate, also check their bio. And after after all that, see Overview above... Even a devout anti-pirate might be having a bad day or something.
Map - If you're going to travel somewhere through lowsec, check stats such as Ships Killed and Podkills in the last hour. That way you won't blindly stumble into someplace such as, say, Hagilur, which I've done before. >.>
Insurance - If you know you're going into lowsec, make sure your ship is well-insured. With T2 ships (or ships loaded with expensive mods) I guess you just have to follow the other precautions even more closely since you get screwed on the insurance.
No smacktalk - You don't want to get negative attention when you're hanging out in the bad part of town. Tick the wrong people off, and they can make your life miserable for a long time. (I do talk a lot though, but not smack >.>)
Exit strategy - Have a reasonable exit strategy planned in case the system starts getting full of bad guys. An insta BM to a station, safespots (though keep moving, they CAN scan you down at safespots), or someplace you can go when the heat gets turned up too much.
Stabs - A lot of people don't like these, but if you're not out actually hunting people for PvP, I don't see how someone could object to them. Throw one or two on, depending on how much you value your ship, while ratting or mining. It takes away cargo space, but think of how much you could lose if they DID catch you because you didn't have one.
This is all of course assuming that you're basically a totally alone newbie that's prolly not going to win fights with a pirate, and can't rally a bunch of friends to help. Also remember that ebil pirates are people too, you can even make friends with them!
If any of you vets out there want to correct me on something or give more tips for us newbies, please feel free!
