So I know I'm not the only one disappointed in the video quality for the alliance tournament shown by Eve TV. In reality, we're quite spoiled by the quality in game, and it simply can not translate to what is essentially tv resolution broadcast. This is no reflection at all on the quality of the EVE TV production, which I thought was incredible.
So, to address this, here's my thought: a special build of the client used for viewing events only. It would only need to receive broadcasts of current environment states; it would not need to send back any information to the game environment, and viewers would not be able to affect the action in the game. It should also be able to play the commentary for the game, to keep things in synch. This would allow viewers to see the action from any angle they choose at the full resolution and with all the effects their machine can handle. In theory, bandwidth should even be less for this, I believe.
Now, the big stumbling block is making a special client for this type of thing, I'm sure. Personally I'd pay a small fee for an event like the Alliance Tournament to see it from whatever angle I want, and with all the detail my machine can muster.
My apologies if this has been brought up already, or if this is the wrong forum for it. Please spare the flame if that's so; just point it out once.

that's a great ideal, i remember the "shadowbane" by UBI has such kind of function that allow player to record the game, and save as an file which can be replayed by a build in utility afterward when you want to see it. and user also can change the viewpoint or angel allow them to analysis the online battle in a very detailed view, also can use this to make nice vids compare to the lag and view restriction in the realtime battle.

I like it! Use the eve client itself to watch the fight, as just a camera that each user could control. I'd have to think that would be a lot less bandwidth for CCP too.
A few harmless flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction.

Well, if you watched EVE-TV they mentioned that getting a client to view battles in such a manner wasn't going to happen, but they did mention that everyone is free to make their own :P
(Of course there might have been a mention of banning if ya did, but that is just minor details :P) |
