Sound decent for a gang setup?
Painters? You ganged with a rage raven?
If not, lose the painters for ECM.

I'm not going into PVP with the goal of necessarily forcing a fight or a kill but with the objective of 'kill or make them run'. If I need a tackler I'll be in a gang anyway...
That said, how does this sound for a setup (Note: My innate lock range is >70km): Highs: 2x Assault Launcher (named) 3x Heavy Launcher (named)
Mids: 1x Invuln 1 1x Med CL5 Emergency Shield Booster 2x Multispec ECM 1x Large Extender
Lows: 2x BCU
Drones(10m3 Drone Bay) (Yes, a caldari that uses drones): (Mostly for anti-frig/inty support) 1x EM Scout Drone 1x Kinetic Scout Drone

Will you need to be a main damage dealer? Will you need to take out enemy support?
Use Heavies for more damage. It will be a DPS highs tank mids DPS lows set up optimally.
Use assaults for anti-support. It will optimally be assaults with precision bllodclaws in highs mwd and EW in mids, bcu bcu in lows.
You can also have a half tank half ecm set up with assaults, 2-3 ECM mods and 2-3 slot tank (like 2xLarge extenders 1xEM hard or small SB)
Finally the good all 4-5xEW and a sensor booster or 20km scram set up with a 1600 plate and sar if you fit rockets or 800 plate and mar if you fit assaults.
Knock yourself out
(dont forget 2xhobgoblin II or warrior II especially when using heavy missles - note Caracal is best used as a gang supplament so first find out what the others will be using.) Arguably my opinions represent to an extent the opinions of my alliance and in particular circumstances give rise to a valid "casus belli" claim. |

Hmm well if I am going to do EM support I'll probably fly a BB instead of a Caracal (better range for it anyway) so I'll rig my caracal for ranged dps support.
How's this rig sound: H: 5x XR-3200
M: Invuln I (II once I can fit one) Annointed EM Ward Additional Thermal Resistance (32%) Med CL-5 Emergency Booster Large Regolith Extender
L: BCU PDU
(Can't fit the above without the PDU... could go with a med extender but still not sure it'd all fit, haven't tried)

Highs - 5 x Malkuth HML (lowest CPU)
Mids - 10MN AB 1 x Target Painter 1 x Sensor Booster 1 x Sensor Dampener 1 x Additional from Above
Lows - 2 x BCU
Drones - Fit 2 x EM Scout or 1 x Thermal Medium (optionally you can ditch the Sensor Damp and fit EW drones allowing for another Painter).
Screw the survivability of the ship when in gang. If you are doing serious gang-warfare and you come under fire in this boat you're toast. You can't keep up with the ECM for very long while boosting shields, and once your cap is empty... Focus on damage output. Use painters so you don't have to worry about frigates/destroyers.
The Caracal is in no way viable for anything but DPS and EW support in gang/fleet PVP, and it sucks for the EW because of cap issues.

It can't take any punisment, but at 90kms - things become a little easier to deal with. Of course, this is not a solo pvp setup - like most Caldari ships, solo pvp is simply trying to make a ship do something it was not made to do. If I wanted to solo pvp, I would train Gallente. Simple as that.

I haven't actually trained for the heavy assaults, I'm too chicken to get my Caracal that close to a fight. That looks pretty good to me, though. Like a Rocket Kestrel, but bigger. I'd probably try to get a shield extender on instead of a booster, and a MWD instead of an AB.

I dont care what other people say, but all solo and small gang PVP happens under 20Km due to scram range (given your not fighting against a Gallente recon).
Fit accordingly, although i must admit a simple 5 heavy, 2 BCU setup works best and skrew the rest of the mdis to whatever you like. No matter what you fit, if you get called primary you'll die regardless.
Oh yea, and dont use kinetic unless its against amarr - take some Exp and Em missles and you'll notice alot of extra DPS (despite your Kinetic damage bonus).

True about the 20 click range but the issue is with nano-equipped ships. Even webbing them doesn't do a whole lot. They can quickly fly outside of your scram range. |

The Caracal is perhaps one of the best tech 1 fire support cruisers out there. Good for dealing out badly needed DPS in gang fights. Meaning that no one should really try to solo pvp with it. It can be done, but like previous post's said the ship is made of paper. It doesn't matter how well you try to tank it. I don't bother tanking mine.
Heres what I use for a gang support. It also can be used as a "suicide tackler".
Hi's: 5x Heavy Launcher's (best named, or t2 preferred if you can afford it). I fit malkuths on mine, because the ship is more than likely gonna die anyway if called primary.
Mids: Sensor Booster (named or t2), 20k Warp Scrambler, Stasis Webifier (named if possible), Remote Sensor Dampener (named if possible), Best Cap Recharger you can afford. Again i stay cheap in this dept, becuase of the low survivability of the ship.
Lows 2x Ballistic Control Units (MUST HAVE MODS)
Rig Slots: (Optional) use rigs that boost your rate of fire, and missile damage only if you want to waste isk on this area. I don't bother, because 30-100 mil is not worth it for a 5-6 mil cruiser that blows up with 2 good hits from t2 weapons.
Again, This ship is best used for Gang support.
This setup is very effective vs most ship types at range. Especially Interceptors. The webber is only used if anyone is stupid enough to get that close to you. You can swap it for another SB, or RSD. Sensor Dampener is used in place of Jammers because of the Kali ECM nerf. Kaputens give 32% reduction in lock range. 2x they should give roughly 40-50%. While this might not save you. It may save the very expensive Battleship you have in your gang.
For the "Suicide Tackler" I took out the sensor dampener, and put in a 10mn MWD. Ive had quite a few success's here as well :)

Edited by: KillerOfMacros on 05/02/2007 18:41:08 Here is a cheap 0.0 rat (rats as opposed to wolf as we don't expect to make it home in 1 piece) pack setup that I use.
5 Heavy assault launcher I (if you have crap around malk or limos is good too)
3 20km warp scrams, tech 1 photon hard and a named large booster (you can also swap out 1 of the scrams for a TP or an AB both are good options)
2 BCU's
The end result is good damage and a passable tank for a roving gang... that and it's also very cheap and you can fit about 3-5 of them for what a good setup runs.

Ok ok I know I posted this in the Revelations list too but I'm trying to get a broader audience!
Hi's: 5x T2 Assault Launchers/Precision Bloodclaws Meds: 1x Sensor Booster(named)1x Large shield ExtenderT2 2x Racial Jammers 1x Web (langour drive) Lows: either 2x BCU (t1 but would t2 fit/be better?) Or I would drop one for either Inertia Stabs or a Plate.
What are veryones thoughts? I tried this out the other night on a couple of Crows, I think they thought I was asleep as they charged me down and weren't engaged at 60kms! but The minute they got in close I jammed 1 and webbed the other and launched my 1 med drone and unloaded everything on the stationary target, he popped pretty quick and his buddy didn't last much longer. Now question is, if i was using heavies would my damage been as good? I'm not sure cause despite the single webber they didn't slow down THAT much I mean they were still doing 1000m/s (roughly) I don't dig assault missiles, and there is no point in tanking this baby as she is a bit of a china doll, but does anyone reckon there is an alternative? Does anyone ever fit turrets? say, Blasters for close in work? or is it better to standardise? All constructive thoughts welcome, all flames will be ignored. TY in advance

Here's what I use for LVL II missions and general PvE.
H: 3x SV-2000 Assault ML (BloodClaw) 1x Advanced "Limos" HML (Scourge) 1x Salvager (This is how I make my living)
M: 2x L Regolith Shield Extenders 1x M Cap Battery 1x Target Painter 1x M Shield Boost II
L: 1x Overdrive 1x BCU
I rarely have shields get below 70%. When using Shield Booster I have to keep an eye on the Cap or it'll be gone before I know it. I kite my targets and pick them off one-by-one starting with the Frigs and working my way up. Unless something is really hammering me, in that case, they go down first. Not sure how this setup will fare in LVL III, but works well otherwise. I almost like the Caracal better than my Drake.
Any comments or advice welcome.

Fit 5 t2 assaults w/precision in highs and sensor damps mids. Stay cheap is the key. You wont last if you get primaried anyways and your DPS is ****ty even with t2 heavies, so go pop their inties and AFs with your assaults.

Edited by: Leto Twin on 26/02/2007 20:41:55 I have been doing (for fleets - if I don't want to take a BB or a BS:
Highs: 3x heavies, 2x assaults (with skills they do abut the same damage to a big ship, the assauls work for little ones too).
Mediums: Prototype Sensor Booster or TII sensor booster (to help with inties or for anti-support role [fast lock is key] and either 4x sensor damps or 3x sensor damp and 1 20km scram. With the sensor booster and some decent skills you can have sweet range.
Lows: Pretty much your choice, I have done either T2 BCS or just istabbed. Or a mixture of both.
Caracal is made of paper, so I liked the istabs for when I was locked when they started taking out support.
I also never try to tank the Caracal, so no shield boosters or hardeners for me.

Edited by: DubanFP on 26/02/2007 20:52:39 It's possible, but don't expect to win against an equally skilled/fitted pilot in a different ship. With the ECM nerf i wouldn't bother but there's 2 ways to go about it. I avoid PDUs and RCUs
Pure Damage: This setup relies on killing the enemy before they kill you. Hi-slots 5 Heavy Launchers
Mid-slots web/warp disruptor "20km" 2x passive hardeners "T2 preferably" Large Shield extender.
Low-slots 2 BCUs
Split setup: Capible DPS with small missiles, but a pretty good tank. Excells against frigates. Hi-slots 5x Assault Launcher
Mid-slots web/warp disruptor "20km" EM hardener 2x Large shield Extender
Low-slots 2x BCU
Niether of these setups are great, but they'll do if you won't use a better ship. My recommendation would be train minmitar or gallente for PVP, and leave caldari for PVE. __________________________

If you have good cruiser and missile skills try this
High: 5 heavy missile (Arby or t2)
Med: 2x Sensor Booster (for range and speed) 1 10mn AB or 10mn MWD if you have good skills because it will eat your cap 2x sensor damps (in case they get close to you)
Low: 2x BCU
With cruiser 5 and good missile skills i can hit with heavy's at about 110km. good damage with Kenetics and a good range. Played tag with a BC the other day and though i didn't kill it, it didn't kill me either =)
Frig killer
High: 5 assult (arby or t2)
Med: 10mn AB 1 web 1 20km warp scram 2x passive resist amps (therm and explosive, or specifif to the frig you're going up agains if you know. you could also put in another web if you want for inty)
Low: 1 BCU and 1 PDU or 2 of either

I see the caracal as a gang or fleet support ship and usually go for 1 of the following setups:
5 heavy launchers 10MN MWD, sensor boost, 3 damps 2 BCU
this setup allows me to do 2 things quite well: stop tacklers by damping their lock range to like 1k b4 popping them. Also in a sniper engagement I can take 1 of the opposition heavy hitters out by damping them from 90k while also able to hit them from 90k. SB is essential for both of these.
5 heavy assault launchers 10MN MWD, SB/shield extender, 20k scram, 2 webs 2 BCU
this setup absolutely annihilates inties, AF's and even some cruisers. When baiting in a belt or so for inties (ie they come to you thinking easy kill) use the extender, when sitting on a gate with a gang use the SB for locking those lil buggers faster. The MWD here is not essential but I like it for getting into range asap.
Both of these setups can be done quite cheaply with plain t1 stuff or if you have cash you can make them even more effective with better gear, but remember, if they call you primary chances are you'll be dead b4 you can warp out in one of these.

You're right, if you want a 1v1 cruiser the Caracal isn't it, but if you want a support ship that can stay at 110km and doesn't need a great tank then it works well. If they get closer and your damps aren't helping then you should get out. I rat with it all the time and use it quite effectively in a fleet. You can win 1v1 though if someone thinks they can take you and don't fly off, the missiles take time to hit and people decide to leave after it's too late.

Not exactly a gang setup, but I'm sure the OP's found his setup after about a year.
High: 5x heavys (with better skills, this could probably be heavy assaults) Mid: 10MN AB II, 24km scram II, 3x (named/t2) damps Low: 2x cap relay 2 drones
It has no tank, but it can damp most ships to under 18km which leaves just enough room to be safe. It'll have some problems with fast ships that can get under the jam range though.
