Was going down the list for processing skills on my industrial alt and was wondering about scrapmetal. Its the most difficult one to learn, even harder than mercoxit, yet all I've ever seen from melting down scrapmetal is tritanium.
Is there some hidden creamy treasure found in scrapmetal that you only get if you train the skill? Because the amount compared to the cargo space for scrapmetal doesn't seem to be even worth the cost of the book.

It's not for the trade good "scrap metal" It is used to affect the 'unrecoverable' part of refining loot from rats etc. The normal rules for how high to train it (with regards your standing, the quality of the refining station etc) apply thereafter.

Ah... that makes more sense.
The "5% reduction in scrapmetal refining waste per skill level." is confusing, if they dropped the scrapmetal part out it'd make much more sense.

but then you get confusment that people might think it also affects the refine waste of ores in 30% refinerys ;)
maybe "5% reduction in refining waste for anything that's nore ore per skill level."?
- It is much more efficient to talk to yourself in person than via the chat system.

If you're refining in highsec stations, taking scrapmetal refining above 1 does you no good. At level 1, you have no waste :) Does the walker choose the path or the path the walker? |

You're speaking about 50% refinery stations... I'm pretty sure empire also has lower ones. __________

Edited by: Lord WarATron on 08/08/2006 10:20:16 Every week, there is someone who asks if there is a point to ore processing lvl5 or scrapmetal processing etc etc.
If you operate at a 30% station or a 35% Refinery, the chances are that you are unhappy with the 84.5% refine you get with refining and refining eff lvl5. So for these players (which tend to be 0.0 players) the scrapmetal is useful. - If you are recycling 500mil of loot/ore each week, losing 15% by not having the skill is a cool 75mil down the drain for each period.
In empire, the scrapmetal/ore processing is useful if you want 100% refine insted of 99.5% that would would normally get. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |

While I was away, a friend took care of my skill training for me and trained it up to Lvl IV. That would have been ok if it was needed for the upcoming salvaging skills, but it isn't.
No matter, I now have all my processing skills to lvl 4 and it looks nicer on my skills list.

Another reason for using the scrapmetal reprocessing is mineral importation. It is quite common in 0.0 to import items such as tractor beams, active hardners, passive targetters, etc for minerals. Often times, minerals such as veldspar, isogen, etc are very hard to obtain. Running them in a hauler or jumping them in a carrier is one way. However, using the items above you can move 8x or more times the minerals you would have if you carried them raw. Now when you get those items to your 0.0 station, you melt them back down to their normal components and build items with them.

The skill doesnt effect the "Scrap Metal" item u usually get from missions or such...it should state that in the Description of the item itself.
Also Veldaspar is an Ore which produces the Mineral Tritaniam when refined.... :p

That was pointed that out in the first replies, Originally by: Joria Klex it should state that in the Description of the item itself.
but you're right, a change in description would help alleviate a bit of confusion. Originally by: Joria Klex Also Veldaspar is an Ore which produces the Mineral Tritaniam when refined.... :p
a well known fact which has ... what ... to do with this post???

There is a point, for completeness of refining skills, and because it looks nice in your skillsheet.

Yes it does, even in high sec. X-Sense Refinery in Osmeden is a 35% refinery, iirc.

Just saying "5% reduction in reprocessing waste per skill level." would be good enough. Easier to just put refining with ores and reprocessing with modules, ammo, etc...

So essentially I am getting 5% more minerals out of my loot each time I refine it?
You all speak of 50% vs 30% reprocessing stations.
What level is a safe assumption for me to raise this skill to and know that I will still be feeling it's effects regardless of which type of station I am in?

Yeah, but would it still be the CCP then we have come to love so much?
