Edited by: Teccmo on 06/08/2006 20:41:27 I haven't been in a major fleet battle in a few months and I realize this might be like asking for ppl to give away their secret ingrediant to some homemade BBQ sauce, but it's an issue many pvp'ers and thousands of alliance members are frustrated about. If you've found some tips on keeping lag-free please share, who knows, maybe carebears will lub you and send you isks from across the galaxy, if it works. <Edit> ... I've been around long enough I skipped mentioning turret effects and effects...we all know that already.

Makes me wish there was 1 button for all this. Not that i do fleet battles, but lag sucks in small groups too.

I always noticed that the overview gives alot of lag aswell. Back when I was still doing fleet battles I made sure my overview was closed untill the place was loaded. Then I would open my overview.
Also make sure that ships are not flickering red or something. Just a neutral color should do, and in 0.0 where the most fleet battles occur, you can just remove all background colors to reduce lag.

Or just get a faster machine. Processing lag on the client side is only improved with the above mentioned. If you have a beastie of a machine, those things do not help - you are still limited as to the bandwidth fed to you from CCP's provider links. Fast machines chew through the info like no tomorrow and ask for seconds. Easy way to check and find out is to see how may clients you can run simultaneously without lag. over 3 and you are laughing.

Ctrl + shift + alt + m Goto the settings tab and untick 'Use memory mapping'. Then restart your client.
Alter the buffer size in prefs.ini. If you've got a gig, then set it 512 or 1024.
Minimize overview when jumping into a system or grid where a fleet is present, open it once you've loaded into the grid.
Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head :)

Also, remove all but enemies from overview and if you can, specialize overview to cetain types (IE just BSes, just cruisers or just frigates, etc.)
Also zoom out as far as possible, usually this doubles my frame rate, but occasionally you'll get nothing.

Running eve in fullscreen seems to improve frame rate a bit too.

Question for you KirikaPhoenix. What exactly does memorymapping on or off do?

Also, i noticed that making your GUI completely opaque helps with the FPS a little bit since the client isnt trying to render the things behind the windows with transparency.
To do this just turn transparency all the way to 255 in your graphics settings. ---------------- Meet... bunneh:

Don't have your camera pointed towards the enemy fleet or your own fleet, if you can help it. Zoom right in to your ship, point the camera down, and use your overview for locking targets when primaries are called. Helps a lot.
Although, none of these things will help you at all when you warp into a true blob fleet battle (think BoB vs Goonfleet). In that case, the server is a limiting factor, and no matter how good your PC, it will be a limiting factor too.

A few off the top of my head.
Clear your cache before you set out - especially on those days you know will be a lag fest. Turn off effects and sounds. Turn off effects and sounds. Turn off effects and sounds. Zoom as far out as possible when it kicks off. Minimise your overview when jumping into a fight and only open it up when you're loaded. I have been told that removing transversal from your overview helps, but this is only an option for BS pilots. Turn off combat messages.

Great tips, but anybody else feels that this is kinda sad that we have to find ways ourselves to make the game(we pay someones for) somewhat playable .....the game that advetises Massive Multiplayer and epic fleet battles...
Maybe they ment ..epic slide shows instead of battles, 1 picture(frame) every 20 minutes and game of luck(cross fingers and hope your modules activate.

I was under the impression that fleet lag has more to do with the server-side than the client-side.
Rendering images is not the bottleneck for most everyone - activating modules requires a server-side response from what I understood. This is where fleet lag comes from.
I may be wrong though

Can someone explain the 'Use memory mapping' option? This is the only tweak I have yet to try, mostly because I cant find out what it means.
Thanks

If it means what it usually means, turning it off is a bad idea unless you have a small amount of RAM. Like 256 Mb or less. Then you might gain a bit of performance but if you have 512 Mb or more, leave it on.
What memory mapping usually means, is that files and devices are mapped into the programs memory address space. Now to refer to a piece of data, the program only needs to refer to a memory address, not a filename and byte offset. It doesn't need to explicitly load the file, all that is done transparently and "behind the scenes."
But if system memory is small, then the operating system will be swapping memory to disk a lot, and the performance gains of memory mapping are erased. In that situation turning it off might give a little bit better performance.

Thanks for the explanation, it would seem I dont need to worry about that particular one then.

Another idea is to poke around in your processes in the task manager and delete anything that isn't critical and taking up CPU. You can even get rid of explorer.exe, also set the EVE process to maximunm priority.

stay off that priority setting in your processes, unless you have a mega PC. It is easely to lock up your pc with that

Yet to get a lockup in EVE for the past 6months I have been doing this, I also do it for other games like Freelancer and Counterstrike Source with no problems. And What Jim McGregor said, I got my terms mixed up
