Originally by: Avon The real problem with that is, no matter how great the game, it will never be able to realise Dune fan's expectations.
Mostly because the fan's expectations exceeds the source material's actual merit.
Dune MMO = Boring spice grind just like the novels.

One reason why Dune combat would never suit a game like this:
Shield-Lasgun interaction.
For those that don't know, in the Dune universe, when a shield gets shot with a lasgun, it's like setting off a nuke. Frig with lasgun becomes the ultimate griefing tool against any ship with a shield. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

ccp doesn't do no storyline in EVE.
Do you think there'd be a change when they pay fees for using the Dune setting? You can change the ship and station models on your harddrive, breaking the EULA.
Maybe there'd be an easier way for you to get the Dune optics if ccp worked together with the Dune rights owners and offered skins? --*=*=*--

Bit like the matrix online
Besides, EVE is already boring enough, if they did a Dune game it would be so dull people would spntaneously explode >_<

Surely if CCP really wanted to do that, then they could.
But why? We already have EvE growing and expanding non-stop, evolving with one major expansion every year.
Why start a whole new game? CCP is not about pumping games one after another, then the mentality "I've done that game, now what's next". This is not EA.
I am looking forward to see EvE around and bigger then even in 10 years.
Let CCP continue to grow EvE, instead of starting something else.

It would be cool, but the problem is that games based on SciFi movies just have the distinct problem of never being able to realise what the players want to play. SOE and SWG is a classic example. Most games like SWG and Matrix online are marketing inspired creations.
EVE is an original game. Inspired by many things, but it's an original title. Marketing came after the game was created, the game wasn't created as a marketing tool. -----------

buying the rights to Dune would probably cost way too much.. Since Dune belonged to Westwood (i think..) and then WS was bought by EA. And EA sure as hell isnt cheap..

I'm really surprised someone hasn't attempted an MMO of B5. I'm sure JMS would be open to ideas as all his new series seem to get canned (Crusade and Legend of the Rangers).
Or Firefly for that matter, altho I'm not sure how good an MMO that would make.

Originally by: Dark Shikari I think the biggest issue here is that, contrary to popular belief, people don't play games because they're set in a universe they like.
They may try it because of that, but if the game sucks, the fact that the game is Star Wars or Warcraft or whatever won't keep them there. Thus, a good MMORPG in X fictional universe would probably have been just as good without X fictional universe, unless the developers are really horrible at thinking up universes and manage to sabotage the whole thing simply because they're not guided by a book.
You think people play games before trying them, or the other way around? "If you were experiencing a lag, it was not server related." |
