'Cause:
Interstellar flight - checked
Capitalistic / Feudalistic economy - checked
Planetary flight - hopefuly checked whenever that might come.

The real problem with that is, no matter how great the game, it will never be able to realise Dune fan's expectations.

I doubt CCP has the resources at the moment to handle more than one game 
And EVE's going to grow as fast as their resources will.

oh but we can dream...
I read ALL the dune books, then saw the original movie, then uncut, while not as good as the books they did well. The SciFi redo and expansion into the Children of dune was well done regardless of a few variances from the orignal movie (stayed within the books concepts).
If a mmorpg as indepth as Eve, was made for Dune, I would have to try it. Maybe along the lines of the God Emporer saga, which lasted for centuries (more then enough time frame for any mmorpg).

Would be better imo prior to the Dune saga so that you can have the Houses duke it out

I think the biggest issue here is that, contrary to popular belief, people don't play games because they're set in a universe they like.
They may try it because of that, but if the game sucks, the fact that the game is Star Wars or Warcraft or whatever won't keep them there. Thus, a good MMORPG in X fictional universe would probably have been just as good without X fictional universe, unless the developers are really horrible at thinking up universes and manage to sabotage the whole thing simply because they're not guided by a book.

Seriously, watching Dune was like trying to grow something in a sand dune. You know nothing interesting's going to happen and you don't know why you're watching.

Doesn't make a lot of sense... you'll get a game that plays a lot like Eve, only with a different art style, and CCP will have to pay license fees to whomever owns the Dune franchise.
CCP is lucky - they don't owe anyone anything to make a game in this setting.

Dune is poorly suited to being an MMO much like Star Wars was.
The general setting is cool sure, but you get 90% of the players expecting to be Miles Teg or Luke Skywalker. Of course either they leave upset or you diminish the what made the original story cool by making it common in your universe.

Yes im all with SHikaris post about just because its set in 'x universe' if the game sucks then no one would play it....it be a great marketing tool tho, i think thats why WoW took off so quickly, becuase Warcraft was one of the first RTS/RPG out there, and a damn fine one at that.
