Hi,
Got home today and was excited to see that my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro sitting on my coffee table!
Wahoo!
I installed the new card using the Catalyst Radeon 3.5 version of the drivers. Everything went smoothly up until I loaded Eve.
The normal nice picture appears, a second bar appears in the taskbar as normal, but the "Accept or Decline" screen does not appear. Instead, all I see is a black square for 5 seconds before the window disappears.
Can anyone help?

3.8 drivers don't work either.

I've read elsewhere on the forums that the 2.5 version of the drivers is stable but I can't get them to install
I don't want to run in Win98/Me compatability mode either.

... I have EVE running very nice with Catalyst 3.7 drivers, but i only have the Radeon 9000 so maybe it makes the difference... :/
here's directX settings i use, might be relevant:
* anisotropic filtering: 16x * smoothvision: disabled (slider all way to left and 'application preference' checked) * texture preference: high quality * mipmap detail: high quality * wait for vert sync: applicaion preference * truform: always off
compatibility settings:
* support w-buffer: enabled * support 32-bit z-buffer: enabled * alpha: error diffusion * support dxt: enabled * alternate pixel center: enabled

Tried those, j0, but I don't have/can't find the following options you mentioned:
* smoothvision: disabled (slider all way to left and 'application preference' checked)
* support w-buffer: enabled * support 32-bit z-buffer: enabled * alpha: error diffusion
I'm using the latest Catalysts (3.8) and the associated Control Panel.
I can log on using compatability mode (win98) but I don't trust it sufficiently enough to bother undocking.

Hmm am downloading the 3.8 drivers at the moment so will see what happened to those options if i actually manage to install the new drivers. ^^;;
The smoothvision thingie is just ATI's name for anti-aliasing... maybe they simply changed it, and i know i had problems with EVE crashing if anti-aliasing was enabled... so maybe if you have anti-aliasing activated 'tis the source of the problem... o.O

I had the same problem (after the EVE-related BSOD) and the only thing that fixed it is deleting the 'Cache' folder.

No anti-aliasing will be ok with 16X anist?
I'll try deleting the cache but I'm not sure what effect that would have?

"No anti-aliasing will be ok with 16X anist?"
Well, it works on my system with 3.8 drivers. (winXP, Athlon 2000, 512 mb ram) Turns out the smoothvision thing is now the slider below anisotropic filtering slider on the 3D > direct3D > Custom panel. If i leave the 'application preference' checked it results in no anti-aliasing i think... but with anisotropic filtering set to max the graphics are v.nice...
BTW. If you installed the ATI card and had say, geForce card before, it might be sensible to reinstall directX as well. Am not sure, but maybe directX installs some card-specific files and settings... so if you reinstall it now, maybe it finetunes itself to the requirements of ATI card o.O

j0, you're so helpful
I'll try re-installing DirectX first and then mess around with the settings.

Hey Josh,
I have been having the same troubles as you with pretty much the same setup. I tried just about everything to make the problem go away and finally fixed it by setting Eve to run in Win 98 mode for Windows XP. To try this right-click your Eve short cut and select properties. Under one of the tabs (Compatibility?) you can set it to run in Win 98 compatibility mode.
Of course this won't apply if you aren't using Win XP as your OS, but it is worth a try.

Turning anti-alias off worked once and then never worked again.
I've had to force Eve to run as Win98 compat.

The effect is that EVE starts up and works normally. Isn't that what you're looking for?

Joshua if you've upgraded Internet Explorer with the Cumulative Patch 828750 try uninstalling via Add/Remove. I have the same problem that you're describing and I've narrowed it down to this.

Hmmm... Josh... You run Win Me ?
First bad thing
You run Win xp ?
Second bad thing.
What your mobo chipset ? Via ?
Third bad thing
To remove all registry keys use regclean.
How many soft runs in same time on your sys at start ?
Check msconfig.
Sometimes format c: is a good solution
Hmmm...

Have you got the latest AGP drivers for your motherboard? Did you install ATI drivers after fully removing all other drivers first?

WinXP VIA-chipset Used Nasty File Remover to clean out all other graphics drivers.
I have the latest Hyperion drivers and WinXP is fully up to date.

<same reply as another thread>
There are lots of random problems with ati cards. I've spent a long time trying out options from reading forums and still not really fixed it.
Here is a summary of the things I have tried
1. Check your Power Supply. Needs to really be 350W+ for ATI cards. Ideally 40A and 5v. Also worth trying to up the AGP voltage in the bios.
2. Is your ATI card getting enough cooling. Weird as it sounds, when the central heating is off, my card runs longer without crashing. Get air circulation over it.
3. Use v2.5 drivers if you can, or the latest 3.8 drivers. With Catalyst 3.8, it includes VPU recover that recognises the card is not responding and sends a mail through to ati. Hopefully the more people that do this, the more likely they will fix it.
4. For some bizarre reason running eve in win98 compatibility mode helps
5. BIOS settings. Variety of suggestions on forums. First is to not have the AGP on auto, but fix it on 4x. 8x appears to have particular problems with older cards. Also having fast writes disabled is suggested.
For me, with win98 compat, increased the voltage to 1.6 and ensuring all the case fans are on gets me 30mins play on average before it resets. With VPU enabled the number of machine locks is reduced and I can relog into the game quite quickly. ________________________________________________ "One may smile, and smile, and be a villain" -- William Shakespeare

I can run Eve for hours and hours on this new card without a problem but I have to use Win98 compatability.
I'm unsure if I'm getting the best performance out of my card though.

I advise you to run Win2k if you can get it and, pity, change the mobo and _no_ Via chipset...It is known that Via has many prob with AGP, USB, etc. since ages.

For the record I have a 9800 Pro and it works fine, a I get a bit of texture tearing at extreme ranges on large objects but I think it's the game engine, not my card. Did you re-install Eve? I noticed it has a lot of things it autoconfigs when it installs...and I'm sure you wiped your old drivers before you installed the new ones. Othe than that I run the game in 1600x1200 and it seems to move along niceley.

It runs but does running in Win98 compatability affect any graphics features/performance?

I don't know about perf affect by 98 mode : you can find an answer in google.
The other chipset for AMD mobo is Nforce 2
