First, let me say that until I finally took the plunge and trained for this ship, my primary ship type was a plated Thorax or NOS Vexor/Dominix. I'm sure that the combat styles of these ships are far different than a Taranis, but I feel like a complete n00b when flying this thing.
The one thing that was crammed down my throat about this ship was that it's speed will win the day. If I can get close under a target's guns and orbit at the 500-1000m needed to unleash my righteous fury of blaster d00m, I should be both close and fast enough to avoid getting cooked.
Now I decided to do some duel testing vs a couple of my corpmates, and noticed several flaws in that theory:
- Web sucks. Getting webbed takes my speed down to under 100m/s, which is expected. In order to keep my transversal up to any decent degree at that point, I have to run my MWD, which not only sucks my cap dry, but also makes my sig radius much bigger, meaning I'm that much easier to shoot.
- NOS sucks. Attacking any ship that fits a med NOS means that I can expect to see my cap evaporate post haste. Couple that w/ the aforementioned web, and getting w/in 10km sounds like a really bad idea.
- Drones suck. When testing vs the Thorax, he unleashed his drones on me, and I was immediately set upon by 5x Mediums. I was under the impression that Med drones would have a hard time hitting a frigate sized/speed ship, but they promptly tore me up. The only way I could reliably eliminate their damage was to use my MWD while orbitting, which quickly drained my cap (see Point #1).
- Having to orbit any ship with the to above modules equipped close range to use my blasers sucks. While the DPS of 3x T2 blasters sounds delicious on a ship of this size, it does me no good if I make it to the target with no cap to use 'em. If I fit a Small NOS to try to suck back some of the cap, I can expect it to be quickly removed by my opponent's larger NOS, meaning I might get a rep in here or there, or a burst of MWD speed very intermittently.
Now I understand that this ship makes a good tackler, and could do it's job w/ a 20km scrambler, orbitting outside of Web/NOS range, but the only way I would end up doing any damage to my target at this point would be to equip rails w/ some type of decent ammo. This means I'd lose my ability to NOS (not a huge issue), but would be able to keep out of the 10-12km range of most Webs and Med NOS modules.
I tested vs a plated Thorax, Harpy, and Wolf. I was able to break the tank of the Thorax, but it could have easily ripped me to pieces. The Wolf literally melted my shields/armor in a few seconds, and the Harpy was able to hit me MUCH harder than I could hit it even when I fit for range and tried orbitting at the edge of my tackle range w/ a 20km scrambler.
Interceptors seem like awesome ships, but they don't appear to have much survivability to them. I realize they're not the solo pwnmobiles of EVE, but I was at least hoping that the speed of the ship would go some distance towards keeping me safe. It seems the only thing it's good for is to run like a girl once I start taking too much damage, which incidently happens about 10 seconds into the fight.
What am I doing wrong?

Rule 1 - Frigates > Battleships > Cruisers > Frigates.
Rule 2 - A webbed and nossed frigate is a dead frigate.
Rule 3 - Interceptors are for intercepting. You see target, you run to target and tackle it.
Rule 4 - Tacklers need to tackle long enough for target to get popped. If you cant, you run.

Your not really doing anything wrong, ALL intercepters die when webbed/nos'd, ALL intercepters get crushed by AF's in a straight 1 v 1, cept mebbe the sissy girly Crow.
About the only 1 v 1 u'll be doing in ur 'Ranis is against other intercepters and tech 1 frigates/destroyers.

I've killed wolves in a taranis. Fit for maximum damage. MWD in close and blast away. If you have problems hitting, don't orbit but keep at distance. Pretty much all wolves fly around with a propulsion mod. SO he either has no web or no scrambler. You shouldn't die in a taranis to a wolf with propulsion mod. Oh and structure tank. Forget active tanking, the fight should be over quick.

a way not to die to web/nos is to use rails [150s with plutonium] you get about 15 optimal thats usually out of web and nos range
3 150s II microwarp [named], cap recharger, 20k scram SAR II, MAPC, Mag Stab II or damage control
my guns get a high DPS but im not in-game so i dont know what it is atm o and use warrior IIs

Tanaris with 125mm II give your oponent a hard time, when orbiting at 15km with a 20km scrambler ;)
But as most said, Interceptor are not Assault ship. Most time used for a fast 2 point on a target or to pop Pods. The locking speed of a Ceptor is awsome. Remote boost it to even been able to lock shuttles ;).
I love my tanaris, but it is not a pwnmobile ;) _________________________ Iam back

Edited by: Ithaca on 11/08/2006 14:09:17 All your points are true.
Webs suck, you need to know when you can get in there and get the kill before they kill you if they have a web.
Nos kills inties everytime. Not much you can do apart from fit your own and hope your regen keeps you going. If not get out.
Small T2 drones will eat an inty in a few seconds expecially warriors. Medium drones you will get a little longer one.
If flying at 500m you should have enough cap to run guns and scram. Anything else is a luxury.
Some pointers to use in the future.
Fit a damage control before you try to fit a rep. The 50% extra structure will keep you alive most of the time. Rep should not be a must fit to an inty. I think you can still fit a 200mm plate and a damage control to a ranis.
Dont try against Thorax's unless you are in a gang. As most will fit web, nos, scram and drones aswell as having alot of tank. You will be very lucky to deal with all that and kill them.
You mentioned two other ships. If you had a blaster fitted ranis going against a Harpy or a Wolf i would put my isk on the ranis.
Pick your fights and the best way to learn how to use them is go out and use them alot. Learn from the times you get killed and analyse when you win. You will eventually become happy with them.
As for long range ranis's the ships isnt comfortable doing it, stick to close range and laugh the first time you kill a crow in 5 seconds :) ------------

My setup is 3x light ion II's, mwd, web, scram, dcu, mapc and a 200 plate.
This gives you the staying power to take on most cruisers and allows you tackle for as long as it takes for help to arrive (especially caracals, tasty little buggers they are and you laugh as they use heavy missiles on you) but the one ship I won't attack is a thorax flown by a competent pilot. Web/nos/drones = dead frig.
Just to repeat what's said before though: If you're flying a ceptor; a damage control unit 4tw. ----------- Join channel 'Turby' or die! (bring pie) Mission running carebears drop good loot. Probe one out today! |

Not entirely sure what you are doing wrong.. but ceptors work much better in gangs.
Here is my main setup if it helps: 3 ion II, 1 small nos t2 mwd, scram, web mapc, a good named damage control, small rep II.
Obviously with an mwd and a rep the cap is pretty well ****ed. But like I said, fly around with a couple other buddies in frigs and wallah.. beeswarm

You are completely correct. The best way to fly an interceptor is to stay at 12-18km and shoot from there. The majority of eve has nos and drones and quite probably a web as well. That in combination will *****any close range inty, so if you expect to survive in your inty (many don't and that's a valid way of flying, just not one I enjoy) then you need to do it at range. A note about speed, you're not fast unless your doing more then 4.5kms, anything less then that and missiles / turrets can and will still hit you, doing more then 4.5kms you start to enter invulnerability mode ...

First off, I love my ranis and you will too if you stick w/ it, the 500+ wreckings are insane. There are really 2 different styles of flying it.
1. If your are in a medium sized gang the i usuall fit neutron II's w/ null and void and 2 damage mods. This gives you insane damage for a frig size ship and is easy as **** to fly.
2. If you are in a smaller gang, solo, or are primary tackler, then go w/ a 125mm or 150mm setup. It's just like you experience on your corpmates; nos, web, drones = dead inty. So you need to be in the 12 to 20km hot zone to still be able to tackle and not in medium nos or web range.
Also, get your cap skills up cause i can usually run all my turrets, mwd, web (if needed), scram for a good 5 mins until i'm dry. One other key to the ranis is to get all your clones the 3% cpu implant (400k isk), it really helps w/ those last few cpu that you always seem to need on it.
Hope that helps, Scorp

Originally by: Damien Smith My setup is 3x light ion II's, mwd, web, scram, dcu, mapc and a 200 plate.
Switch the Ions to Electrons and the MAPC to a damage mod/EAN and you have yourself the winterceptor. Train good speed skills and maybe invest in some implants (though player skill at maneuvering and judging propulsion module timing is more important), and there's no excuse for losing to another Inty 1v1. You'll also stand a very good chance against the one/two medslot Assault Frigates (just make sure they have a propulsion mod fitted before you rush in), other AFs which are set up for fleet work, and badly set-up Cruisers/Battlecruisers. Gallente Recon ships should also be killable.
I'm not a fan of rails, though they have their place. You sacrifice a lot of damage in order to be able to hit from 12km+, which greatly dimishes your advantage solo against other frigates. I'd rather just stick with the blasters in gangs and hope the guy doesn't pick me.

You need navigation and cap skills to make a solo inty effective.

Edited by: Now Mary on 12/08/2006 05:30:15 Inties just aren't for some people. I have tried flying inties on and off for over a year, and just haven't really liked them at any point. I tried the blaster taranis at different skill levels, and just never quite found it satisifying. I am currently playing around with a harasser taranis with 150 IIs, mwd, 20km and small cap injector and still not really digging that either.
I much perfer the assault frigates, personally.

Edited by: Hydrian Alante on 12/08/2006 05:58:27 I lost multiple close range Ceptors.
Almost everybody fits a webber. If you are webbed you¦re dead.
And there is everytime a ridiculous amount of cruisers with small guns out there. Can you say wtf when a Maller with 5 med pulse II rips you apart in a matter of seconds?
If you want to do the tackling job with a mwd you have to use at least a small nos to keep everything running. But then you are most times dead.
For now I¦m flyin only longe range ceptors with an ab. I¦m very happy with my Raptor right now and I can¦t really understand why so few ppl using this baby.
I can orbit at 15km and can run everything forever and can stay out of web and medium nos range. With a speed from 1500-2000m/s and the low signature you are fast enought to stay out of the tracking from almost all guns. Only drones are your foes. But almost everytime I got enough time to kill 5 hammerheads. And if it¦s getting to hot you can run away everytime which is most times impossible if you are webbed.

Solo ceptoring is advanced gameplay. You ll get many awsome kills against illprepared and unlucky peeps in cruisers and BCs. You can even ransom a few cruisers BCs and that pay for your next ceptor. On the other hand you have to know how to look at ships and see what they are carrying weapons wise or use an alt to ship scan or at the veery least use show info to check their ingame experience on the particular char.
Vexors with Heavy drones and med rails, Caracals and Feroxes without precision missles (or using fury on you -has happened to me), Brutix woth rails or med Neutron Blasters and single web etc etc are all ships you can kill.
As a tackler for a bigger gang you can try other putting 1 point on target and be ready to warp off / fly away ASAP or go in close with 2 points electrons NOS and a super tank (small rep - 400 plate, dcu 400 plate, rep dcu, 75II gatlings dcu 400 plate and sarII) and hope to survive long enough for the target to be bbqd.
Finally there is ceptor gangs. In those fit 125/150 rails a cpr and a 20km point. 5-6 of you can kill any BS or cruiser sized ship. If you are taking a lot of hit move away/ warp out/ take his drones for a ride. If the target is going down fast you are good. If not get everybody to shoot his drones. This tactic is very good and only has problems with Dominixes and Ishtars (can still kill them but its tricky) and precision Ravens / Cerbs (can still kill them by ECM and/or dampeners).
Hope it helps.
