While I truely enjoyed running my destroyer, I would reccomend going for cruiser. If you want to run missions and progress in levels of these, cruiser is the best option, IMHO. Destroyers as the are now are just a bit borked in that there is only one per race and that they are PITA to try and solo L2's in. So go for the cruiser and work on your gunnery/missles skills, depending on your race and preferred set ups. Also, take a look at quick fit to plan your fittings. Great tool, and helps me to see when i need to train pg/cpu skills up .

It depends on what you want to do.
If you run missions, go straight to cruiser, as the previous poster said Destroyers aren't great for L2 missions (though I was able to do Worlds Collide, a rough L1 mission, in a Destroyer and that was trouble, so they may help with tough L1s).
If you're going to pirate, skip it. It's very bad for pirating, though the Interdictor which is the Tech 2 variant is a good tool for a group, but you don't have to worry about that yet.
I rat in my Cormorant and it's very effective. The range bonus is great.
Hauling in a destroyer...haha...nevermind.
Now you have some info to choose from. Hope it helps.

As a newbie to EVE, I have to agree that trying to solo L2 missions with a destroyer is a PITA. I picked up my first L2 contact last night and didn't even realise it until the missiles started ripping chunks out my little Catalyst. Went into hull several times and spent a lot more to finish that mission than I got out of it.
However, you can get the skills to fly a destroyer quicker than those for a cruiser, and destroyers are considerably cheaper, so they makes a nice step up from frigates until you have the skills/isk to buy that shiny new cruiser.
BTW, they are also a PITA to fit, as they tend to have lots of slots but not enough PG or CPU. And they are slooow!

the Destroyer can better be seen as a frigate variant than a different class of ship - it has a lot of nice aspects to it (i love mine) but it's not really much of a step up in terms of raw power/ability so yes, i'd definitely power-through to cruiser although i would still pick up a destroyer at some point so that you have a 'big frigate' with lots of high-slots - there are many times it comes in handy :)

I rilly like my destroyer. but it dose not come into its ouwn till you get better skills. thay as of yet have not got a good place in the game but. destroyers are primaly anti-frig ships and with the proper skills and fitings thay can pop frigs in one or 2 vollys. that being said destroyers are not ment to be close range. you need some distance to work in a distroyer.
you get a few of them in a gang thay make a good pirate hunting groop as most ( I say most not all) pirates fly frigs. now a T-1 destroyer will not stand up to a T-2 frig.

Destroyers are worthless. They don't have any resist.
Don't waste your isk. Go straight for a cruiser.

PITA = Pain in the *ahem* behind.
I run a gallente destroyer and it really makes level 1 missions a breeze. You can lay out a world of hurt on multiple targets. The problem with them is that they are too fragile and their weapons are too small for lvl 2 missions, really. I don't regret getting mine. If you're a "power gamer" and want the big ships as fast as humanly possible, the money and skill points you sink into destroyer won't be much good. ----- The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. |

As said, Destroyers while being able to dish out some good damage are realy too fragile for mission running at level 2. For ratting they are good for low sec hunting. with T2 weapons, ammo and their range bonus you can stand off and kill without any real problems. But mainly Destroyers come into their own in fleet actions as Intie killers, they are not realy a solo ship, so I would say, go with the cruiser. Better still, take an extra day or so training the skills and go with a Battle Cruiser

The key to making a destroyer work is to think of it as a really big figate, not a small cruiser. It has tons of firepower but crappy defenses (ok, better than frigs, but nothing like what you can have by steping up to a real combat cruiser).
The destroyer is esentially a PvP team boat in my mind. Its great at destroying light, fast targets. It will rip up the enemy frigs and drones like mad. It will also go boom if the other side actually starts shooting at it :) Other than that it doesn't really stand out. You can do more or less all level one missions in a solid combat frig, as well as rat hunt down to about .5 systems or so. Level 2 combat mission will eat your destroyer alive, you just cant tank the dammage you have to take, you need to step up to a cruiser.
So in summation, the destroyer is really just a very specialized team combat ship, or for the frig pilot who wants to feel macho. Its not a subsitutue for a crusier in any way.

I have a lot of fun running level 2 missions in a destroyer. Actually it is very challenging and it requires clever tanking and gun selection. However each mission takes 30m - 4 hours, so it's surely not the fastest way to run them.
Also I believe that running 3/10 complexes is fun, and ratting in below 0.5 is not that much to worry (avoid fellow bipedals though).
Also keep in mind that for destroyer you need the same equipment as for frig (and same small gunnery skills), hence skillpoint wise it is much closer than a cruiser.
