The Sensor Overlay is a nice way to be aware of your surroundings and on what is going on in space. We now would like to improve this feature and add more objects in space to the Sensor Overlay, along with filtering options and a new compass view. These new objects include personal and corporation bookmarks, agent objectives, landmarks and more.
Check out CCP Lebowski's latest dev blog Sensor Overlay 2.0: Bigger, Better, Bookmarks in Spacier! for all the exciting details! CCP Phantom - Senior Community Representative - Volunteer Manager |

Linkoman wrote:Awesome changes! However could us colourblind folk (particularly red/green) get some options to help distinguish those colored lines?
The colors were only supposed to serve as additional distinction, the main difference between each type is the actual shapes and form and different icons.
That being said, additional emphasis or distinction is nice and we want to cater to that on a global scale and make it possible to shift colors so that they make more sense for different types of color blindness. It is a larger discussion and doesn't fit into one specific feature like the Sensor Overlay, but we are definitely looking at it as part of the bigger picture. Time for a quotefest!
Initial disclaimer: I'm the QA Analyst for team Five 0 so can't speak in too much depth about the design goals for this feature. Rest assured I'll make sure the relevant folk get the messages meant for them Froozen Ice wrote:Great change.
You might want to add one thing to the Compass Overview. Having the Align to/Warp To displayed to the compass could be a great addition. This way people would know which way to turn their ship.
Callic Veratar wrote:Probably not a feature for verson 2.0, maybe 2.1, but how about fleet broadcasts in here too (Plus align to/warp to/target/shoot/whatever)? Some really great ideas here! There's certainly lots of scope for the compass and overlay to give additional and more meaningful feedback to players in the future.
Linkxsc162534 wrote:Does it show the bookmarks on grid as a point? Its shows bookmarks in the same way whether you are on grid or not
Bienator II wrote:wow. bookmarks in space! thats so awesome! Radar is cool too ;)
and thanks for unifying overlay and the bracket list! You are very welcome. It was important to us that we didn't make a system that conflicted with existing ways of navigating space, meaning people just turned it off and never used it!
Lisa Obrigada wrote: What about making bookmarks show in Overview tabs? Be easier to warp to a BM by clicking once and hitting 'S' rather than right clicking in P&P? Or at least left click on a BM and have it appear as a 'Selected Item' for align/warp purposes.
PPS: Hot-keys for favorite bookmarks? Control+1 going to BM one for example would be *swoon*. If I remember correctly the initial design decision was to keep personal items out of the overview. It was important to us that players are aware that any item shown in the overview was visible to all. I'll pass the sentiments on though.
As for hotkeys, that's another interesting idea, I'll put it to the designers and see what they say.
Samsara Toldya wrote:Well... I'll leave a "like" and a question:
Anomalies green - signatures red I'm missing the point where it is explained why those colors needed to be changed? I don't believe it was a need more than a desire for a more consistent color scheme now that there are more things to display. As I mentioned in the blog though this feature is still being tweaked so these colors are not necessarily final.
Pic'n dor wrote:Some space object in the overlay don't get into the selected item box like the BM or the agents. Could be great to get them there to preselect them / align to / warp to. That's a good point, I'll see if we can fix that.
Funless Saisima wrote:That stuff around the compass can be disabled right? Yep. If you filter out all the Sensor Overlay options you just get the blank compass. CCP Lebowski | EVE Quality Assurance | Team Five-0

Masao Kurata wrote:I'm generally liking this, but it of course needs more work.
- Most critically: there is no longer a shortcut to open the directional scanner. Being able to have the d-scanner and probe scanner open at the same time is something I think everyone wanted but if it's released like this many people won't even know how to get the d-scanner back.
- Arguably even worse: the directional scanner doesn't remember whether it was open and has to be reopened every time you undock. {EBR-25025}
- The scanning delay when entering a system is now really obnoxious. It even applies to your own bookmarks, they won't have brackets in space until the scan reaches them and the brackets aren't usable until the scan has finished which takes... 20 seconds!? Nobody liked this aspect of the overlay in the first place and it's a very strong reason to turn off the overlay.
- Although overlay brackets gained a context menu, you appear to have done this by removing it from the results in the probe window. Oops? {EBR-25028}
- Bracket lists aren't displayed at all if there's an overlay bracket and you're not using "compact" bracket lists in space {EBR-25023}
- We need scrolling bracket lists back! I didn't agree with removing them in the first place but they're even more important now that our bookmarks are in the bracket lists.
- Renaming a bookmark doesn't update the overlay. {EBR-25022}
- Hovering over the compass for a key to the new brackets is... not the most useful hover behaviour. If I could hover over it for a list of overlay brackets displayed on that part of the compass that would be useful.
- If we're going to have camera snapping from the brackets, could we have it from the probe scanner please?
- How about brackets for combat probe results?
- Inclination indicators on the compass would be nice, it doesn't have to be completely one dimensional.
- The unstacking of the scanner windows isn't actually part of the new Sensor Overlay (It's a change done by Pirate Unicorns), but I cant see them disagreeing with this.
- Again, an issue for Pirate Unicorns, but that sounds like a defect to me!
- The scanning delay is certainly not final, at the very minimum we're looking to remove locations and missions objectives from it, likely so that they show immediately.
- Interesting, this isn't intended. Ill look into this tomorrow.
- Yep, we're aware of this, but thanks for the report (Again, not intended).
- Worry not! Scrolling brackets is actually scheduled to be reimplemented for this feature!
- Thats a bug, we're aware of it.
- Thanks for the feedback, Ill pass it on.
- Interesting suggestion, Ill see if its feasible.
- Again, a nice idea!
- Moar suggestions for our designers!

Hi space friends, Thanks for the great response so far makes working on this that much more enjoyable
Max Kolonko wrote:Pls change the brackets color/shape/whatever to differentiate Bookmarks that are ON GRID and OFF GRID We did consider differentiating warpable vs. non-warpable sites. I'm not super excited about supporting grid-fu exploiting directly so what would your particular use case be?
Lil' Brudder Too wrote:Except, locations that are all buried within folders absolutely SUCK to navigate quickly with the right click menu in space. The right click menu in empty space is not changing. When you interact with the bracket via right click or the radial context menu then you immediately get the options for that location directly regardless of folder, provided you haven't hidden it. If you intend to rely on the right click empty space location list for access you are not really using this feature anyway.
Masao Kurata wrote: Well however fast you make it, it won't be faster than the probe window and if you changed that to be just as slow people would be out for blood and I think you know that. If it's not as fast the probe window, people won't use it. I get that you want a radar like sweep but functionality has to come first.
We do have plans to make access to your locations (as opposed to exploration content to be discovered) quicker. All the bookmarks are known to the client before you even enter the system most of the time so we are not bound to the server telling use about them like is the case with the discovery/exploration content. We do realize the tactical importance bookmarks will have in many cases and that arbitrary delays impact game play around gates or when logging in while in space.
Mara Rinn wrote:Now your next challenge: have the "compass rose" expand out to become the tactical overlay when we activate that feature. Activate tactical overlay, the various tick-marks become "dots on poles" around the border of the tactical overlay's 250km radius disc.
Interesting idea you have there. I had toyed with having a 'similar' in scene compass/direction indicators while overlay was active but haven't had the time to explore that any.
Keera Nakamura wrote:As you now have the "compass" code, could you toss that over to some other team to show the overview content as an overlay on your cap. In big fights when zoomed out to the max, I have no clue in which direction the enemy is actually approaching from :) Also an interesting idea. The compass/direction tool has been sparking interest from various non-sensor overlay related activities and it certainly merits some contemplating. For now though we will stick to showing just overlay related information.
Linkoman wrote:Awesome changes! However could us colourblind folk (particularly red/green) get some options to help distinguish those colored lines? I have been thinking off different stripe like patterns for the site ticks or lines in the compass to give them a distinct signature. A bit like how DNA strips tend to be represented. It has the potential to become very messy exceptionally in a busy system but then again it might work. I'm not making any promises for the next release though.
It is nice to see good constructive feedback so please keep it coming. |

Thanks for all the questions, suggestions, criticism and love so far! Its all massively appreciated! I'll try and address a few more points.
Unezka Turigahl wrote:1. Can we get expeditions to show up on the compass display as well? Or even just lump them in with mission objectives? That way when I'm doing an exploration run I will know that I have passed into a system that has an expedition, reducing the need to have the expeditions window open at all times. A nice idea! We'll discuss it and see if its possible. Right now we're focused on getting the current defects fixed in the system, before we move on to potentially adding more things.
Saisin wrote:can we also haz the ability to have the camera align to bookmarks when clicked in space? Sure thing, we've added it just for you! Not really, it was already in, but you're welcome anyway!
Ezio Dicostanzo wrote:Loving it ! Questions:
* WILL WE EVER HAVE BOOKMARKS VISIBLE IN THE OVERVIEW ? Is it in the pipe? or it's something CCP doesn't want to do ? * What's the point of showing "space north" ? Who cares? What's the added value for everyone ? No one cared before, why should we care now?
thanks a lot dudes - Personal items in the overview are generally something we want to avoid. The design choice was to keep the overview consistent for every player, meaning if you see something there, you know everyone can. - The value of fixed compass axis will be different for different playstyles, but we hope it will primarily help with overall spacial awareness and communication between pilots. Also I think some people cared, EVE has a lot of players with different requirements!
Bagrat Skalski wrote:Colours are too dim for me. Why not make them brighter shades? Some are really murky. Thanks for the feedback. We're still tweaking these colors so these may change.
Keith F wrote:Would it be possible to get a 36hr/7 day/fore-ever timer on BM's.So probed wormhole-sites etc fall off the list as they expire I personally love this idea (Wormholes are my preferred EVE home so it makes sense), but I can say with some certainty that that won't be happening with this release. Sorry about that! Five 0 do have plans to touch things in this area again and that's on our list of things to consider when we do.

Masao Kurata wrote:Hmm, I just tried this again today because I kept reading about the filtering and thought "what filtering? I couldn't see it, I thought it wasn't in yet", and after minutes of fiddling worked out that what I called the "key" earlier is the filter menu, this points to a problem with the UI.
The filter menu looks precisely like a key, not a menu. There are no visual cues that anything but the enable/disable checkbox is interactable and even when I tried clicking on the icons nothing happened because only the text (what the hell?) is the hitbox. I would suggest a bevel to hint to the user that these are buttons, preferably switching between raised and lowered when toggled. Furthermore, the interactable area should be extended to include the icon.
We will be taking another pass over the filter. We intend to make it more clear that the options are interactable and will probably fix the location in place where it appears to prevent it from accidentally obscuring other HUD elements. The no interactable icon bit is a defec, I will fix that.

When IGÇÖm in a risky situation I like to have my finger poised on the GÇ£get the hell outGÇ¥ button and would rather not have to fidget with right click menus to do this. We won't be adding the to the overview in the foreseeable future. There are both technical problems with that and a some of design philosophy involved that. When IGÇÖm making a new bookmark and find that I need to put it in a different folder than the folder selected in the GÇ£new locationGÇ¥ window, I find scrolling through the list of folders in GÇ£folderGÇ¥ combo box to be quite fiddly and unpleasant. I would like to be able to, upon clicking on and expanding the GÇ£folderGÇ¥ combo box, begin typing in the name of the folder I wish to select and have the highlighter jump to the folder IGÇÖm beginning to type. This would make the creation of new bookmarks that need be placed in different folders much faster and easier. We weren't focusing on the bookmarks specifically as a feature but rather to expand them into the Sensor Overlay at this point.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, we're still working hard to incorporate feedback and fix issues found through continuing internal and public testing. I just wanted to drop in here and let everyone know what changes we've made, along with giving a list of currently known issues.
Changes:
- The Compass now also takes into account the vertical position of the camera, indicating the relative height of anomalies by moving the each locations colored line above and below a central line in the compass. (We highly encourage you to try this for yourself on Singularity)
Fixed Problems:
- 'Warp to 0' and 'Warp to X' radial menu options should now work with all mission, personal, and corporate location types (Where applicable) - The Sensor Overlay will now default to on initially, but then remember your settings for any future log ins - Show info on all Sensor Overlay locations should now work as expected. - Accepting or completing a mission from an agent in space should now add or remove the locations from the Sensor Overlay - The bracket lists should now work successfully whether in compact mode or not. - Fixed an issue which would cause Overlay brackets to not be removed from space in certain circumstances.
Known Issues:
- Bracket lists are not including non sensor Overlay items. - Adding a personal or corp location with locations disabled in Sensor overlay still shows location in space. - Approach option is not available in the radial menu for certain location types. - Sensor overlay location names & distances are obscured when names are too long.
That's all for now, please continue to provide feedback in this thread, and report any issues you find through our bug reporting system.

Hey all,
Just wanted to drop in to detail a few more things changing/appearing in today's Singularity update as well as changing in the last week.
- Back by popular demand, green anomalies!
- The compass now retains its orientation regardless of the cameras vertical position, and uses the colored bars on the compass to indicate whether a location is above or below your camera.
- The colored compass bars have been cleaned up, so should make it easier to see the vertical position of any locations
- Personal and Corp locations should now appear instantly when entering a system (No more waiting for the sensor sweep for these)
- The fuzzy sfx have been removed from Personal and Corp Locations.
- Various additional fixes to the radial menu options.
Thanks for all the feedback that's helped us reach this point!

Altirius Saldiaro wrote:I guess I misunderstood the part about the bookmark filtering in the People & Places.
I thought it was to only show the bookmarks that are in the current system that I am in. Some of my folders have over 100 bookmarks in them, so when that folder is open, it's a pain to have to close that folder to open up another folder, or scroll down to get to another folder.
If I had the option to filter only the bookmarks that are for that system that I currently am at, then I could have several folders open at once, and only see those bookmarks in the folders.
Having hundreds of bookmarks from other systems shown in the folders doesn't help me out at all. You unfortunately did misunderstand the filtering that was added in this release. We've done nothing to filter the locations within the people & places window, only which of them appear in the Sensor Overlay.

That would be great, please submit a bug report from in game if possible so that we can get the appropriate error logs.
Once you've done this you can try changing your ui scaling to a different option as a work around, as this should allow you to access the options for the time being.
