Heh i've seen quite a bit of this myself too! People flamming others for simple questions and telling them they should just quit. We all make mistakes, especially when were new, hardly a reason to tell someone to give up that early on in their eve career.

That's some good entertainment, right there. I actually found it on my own, then saw the thread on the EVE-O forums after I fired off a couple sarcastic replies on the MMORPG.com ones.
Heheh, yeah I saw that. Seems that some of the folks there have a bit of trouble forming an arguement... nah scratch that, a bit of trouble forming a coherent post. I did my little bit and added some thoughts at the end of reading it.... interesting place

A pretty fair review, not very in depth at all but maybe just enough to get people interested.

I recently stumbled upon 2 players within 2 days, in newbie systems, both with a negative security rating, giving 'tips' to new players. They were saying how you have to spend the first month or 2 only training learning skills, because that's 'smart' to do. And if anyone asks a very simple question, they get hammered for being dumb. If they ask why they have been blown up after taking a can-bait, they get flamed for being idiots.
I engaged both of them in a discussion with a newbie character i just created. I was trying to find out what exactly they were doing - the first one resorted to calling me an idiot after i simply presented some arguments against his 'tips'. He was saying how i'm just 2 days old and i don't know anything about the game (this guy had a month old character), and how i should just quit it because i'm an idiot.
The second one, a 9 month old character, pretty much started flaming me after i told some new players to train utility skills before learning skills, so they can get along better in the first weeks - he was saying how people are stupid if they dont start with frigate 4, amongst other things - being completely oblivious to the fact that he was tlaking to entirely new players to the game.
I can't say anything else than, damn, this sucks, because as it stands now these kinds of people are going to send away a lot of potential players.

Question about can flagging (and yes, this is somewhat relevant): If I take from their jetcan with a "noob" character, and am ganged with my main, will them blowing up my noob character flag them to my main?

I guess the nubs on that forum never played SWG when 10 people where fighting a mob of dewbacks or in City of Villains where 80 people fight in a pvp zone or do a stupid hammi raid... for a worthless little enhancement.
EVE is lightyears ahead of them. WoW on any good PvP server primetime I get disconnects from teh server in Ogrimmar. Yeah... or how about some Onyxia Raid downing a whole server primetime for an hour... yeah... eve has it so bad

I played City of Heroes for about 6 months (up until CoV came out and the CoH servers became a ghost town) and I still remember the horrible lag generated by a 6 person group fighting a mob of maybe 10 guys. Awesome game, and I think stability wise it was fine (to be fair, some days the main center of the city had billions of people running around and it would handle it quite well. I think it was more of an npc problem), but yeah, Eve really is light years ahead of them

I'd only pod him out of pity.
He seems extremely confused and probably has a very emo myspace/blog. Plus anyone who quotes THEMSELF tends to think themselves to be overly important.
Plus harping on the fact that 2 different people reviewed the game differently? What kind of world do people live in where all reviewers have the exact same feelings about a game?
And despite the large amounts of suck in getting petitions answered on EVE, it's still far less of a pain in the ass than other MMOs, so by comparison, it earns the high CS ranking. Oh, and lets not forget the devs who post in these forums often, unlike almost every other MMO out there.

I have 4 City of Heroes/Villains accounts with 11 lvl 50 heroes and a slew of mid villians... that game could have been great... tbh its more dead than SWG to me.

Haha... well tbh, I don't think there are that many people like that. I go "slumming" with noob characters just to hang out in noob channels sometimes, and for the most part the 50% or so of the people in each noob chanel who are actually veteran hauler alts are very helpful to the new people. At least in the minmatar channels. Although you get the occasional argument running between alts of opposed alliances. :P
And the game is only slow paced if you let it be. Spend a week or two to get MWD and propulsion jamming and frigate 4 in any race but amarr (who suck anyways) and tbh you never have to train another skill as long as you live, provided you like really really really hard pvp. +++

i agree, but some people cant get past the "oh no, i'm a ship" thingy and feel completely unable to roleplay (if what they do is roleplaying at all)without elfs and trolls.

Why bother caring what the post on the MMORPG forums? I've known for awhile that place is mostly populated by rabid morons who have only played WoW and think they can comment on all the other MMOs, which are inevitably inferior to WoW. (While WoW is just a tired EQ rehash)

Edited by: Plutoinum on 16/08/2006 14:32:30 Good review, although I have only read the relevant parts. (After reading 'sound', I jumped to the next parapraph. ) But the guy understood, what EVE is about and pointed out, where EVE is 'better'. ( And those forums there show that EVE isn't for everyone. EVE requires some brain usage, planning and often patience. Without that you fail. If you want non-stop action without much hassle, I'd say wrong game. )

I couldn't agree more. Since you ARE the only entity responsible for choosing whatever path of the myriad of possible paths, what is Eve other than a perfect roleplay? I guess I define roleplay as the ability to become the character while you're playing. Under that definition, the sheer open-endedness means that Eve is a great role play. You can change everything about your character midstream if you decide to play a different role-huge bonus that I don't think is possible in any other game.
The lag report is a bit optimistic, but then again, how is a reviewer supposed to get engaged in a fleet battle or run L4's or complexes?
The service must have been pure luck, or CCP being tipped off. I have had petitions completely ignored and the ones that do get responded to are after a couple weeks.
Sound does deserve an 8 at first, but needs more variation to keep that rating. After a while it gets monotonous. Tip to CCP: If possible please vary the sounds of engines, warp, gate jumps, etc. by the ship size and possibly also by race to enhance the experience of a ship being different than the other ship you were flying a minute ago.
The review really didn't give a great idea of what Eve is about. I have not seen one yet that did. TBH, I picked Eve out to sheer luck when deciding what MMO to try next. It had a free trial and I was hooked from day one. The reviewers really need to do more research by interviewing long-time players and some noobs to get a feel for the game rather than assuming that their experience is typical and writing about it.
All in all, I'm glad the review was positive, since we all like Eve and want it to continue to do well. It's kind of ironic that the reviewer and I came out with a similar score for entirely different reasons-maybe that's another strength of Eve is that everyone's experience is different.
