Edited by: Daggiz on 15/08/2006 21:12:40 Figured I'd ask this here because I wasn't sure if I read it correctly or fi the answers have been updated...
but, if I leave my nice rifter or the nice rupture in a SS and log out, if someone else finds it will I:
a.) know that they took it, whether it be an aggro timer to that character or a mail from concord (or in my case since I inhabit low sec areas the faction) stating that player X stole my ship, or will I know because I log into my pod and not ship?
b.) have any recourse to get it back and have kill rights based on the theft?
In essence will I ever know if someone steals my ship, who that person is, and will that person suffer a sec. hit for stealing from me? Or am i screwed and don't know who did it to me and have no way to get back at them?
Thanks...before I even contemplate leaving a ship in a SS I want to make sure I have all the answers to my questions. Oh, and if I leave it in hi-sec, there is no aggro counter right and it is considered to be theft and concord will pop someone or is there a counter and I am still screwed out of my ship?

If you log off in space inside a spaceship (SS'd or not), the spaceship will warp off automatically to some random spot, and then vanish completely. (If you have agression timer on you from combat, your ship still warps off but waits up to 15 minutes before vanishing... hope your enemy doesn't have scan probes for that duration)
If you move a ship to anywhere in space (SS'd or not) and then eject from the ship into your pod, your spaceship will float there in space until you (or someone else) takes control of it. If you log off like this, your pod (ie: what you are flying right now) will warp off & vanish; anything unpiloted will just sit there.
If someone nicks a ship that you left in space, you do not get any kind of Kill Rights or notification. _______

IIRC when you log out your ship actually warps away and stays out of the game environment. No one can steal your ship while you are logged out and in flight. They can find your ship and blow it up if you go AFK without logging out. Sig removed, lacks Eve-related content - Cortes |

ah, thanks. yeah I understood about the logging part, I was more concerned that said ship was being left out there in the open ad not being able to keep it safe, whether or not I left it there intentionally.
So bottom line is I am screwed if I leave ship and someone finds it...
guess I gotta wonder if its worth the risk. Thanks.

You can only have your ship "stolen" if you are ejected from it.
When you log out, you are still in your ship, and will actually disappear from space after a period of time based on your aggression.
The fact that you have heard about people having their ships stolen from their safe spots is because it is a common practice to leave a few reinforcement ships (maybe you plan on needing backups or just need to change your ship class) nearby. With a few probes and some patience, these areas can be found out and any abandoned ships of value may be destroyed or stolen.
To answer your questions, there is no notice you receive when someone boards one of your abandoned ship, no kill rights (well, if they destroy your ship before boarding it - making it theirs and not yours - then you will get a kill mail, and kill rights I think if its in Empire).
As for an aggro counter: there is supposed to be one attached to boarding someone else's ship, but I'm not too sure how it works. Haven't really wanted to test it so I've put my shuttle and rookie ship collecting on the back burner

You can NOT lose any ship provided you are inside that ship when you log off. If you are in that ship When you log, that ship will warp off out of the game never to be seen. I tried looking for one under those conditions and you can not even be seen on the scanner.
NOW, if you park a ship and leve it drifting in space unmanned (i.e. you ejected) Then it can be found via the use of a co op frigate and probes. once the ship has been located the pilot can bm the spot, dock and return in a shuttle OR he will be accompanied by someone in a shuttle. At anyrate there will be no indication provided as to whom took your ship. UNLESS that person is clumbsy and forgets to destroy his shuttle that he used to obtain ur ship. I have found and aquired numerous ships by scanning for them and when I find them if i can not fly them I know someone who can :) and your ship will soon become my ship. I love this kind of piracy as the victim rarely offers up any fuss about his lost goods.

so pretty much avoid doing that in any system you happen to inhabit mr. cleann???
Thanks for answering that. Now I know what I can do and what I can't - and that actually helps out a lot.
Again many thanks.

LOL You're welcome M8. and no I didnt take a dread .....yet. Still working on that one. The largest ship I captured so far has been a apoc. My advice is this. If it is a ship you value alot then keep it in a station or a pos that is set to attack all who come near it that is not friendly to you.

I don't get your hostility Daggiz. If you eject from a ship while in space of any sec rating, you are saying "come and get it if you can fly it!"
Actually that isn't piracy. That is called salvage. Piracy is where you kill or coerce someone out of their possessions.
I think salvage operations are very cool and as benign as you can get in Eve. Live by the Sword, Die from Bravado. |

Let me get this right
If I am in Sector Fun, and I have to run to dinner, I can just log off rather than travel all the way back to Star Base first? And my ship will be perfectly safe and in that sector (with me in it) when I log that character back in?
If so, this will make the wife much happier with me!

Yeah, pretty much. It's a handy way to avoid detection. Also, if you log out in a battle with rats, they tend to lose aggro on you.

Hostility towards salvagers? no hostility there, just wanted to make sure that i understood the system before attepting something in some of the 0.0 places I visit and was looking at setting up a few extra ships in case I go pop - which happens from time to time, where if I was quick enough I could warp to the ship in question.
Come to heimatar if you like salvage - lots and lots of stuff there.

Yes you can just log off whaile you are in space. However, There is a chance that when you log back on your ship could become "corrupt". Should that occure, your only choice is to warp to a station, dock and repackage your ship and rebuild it. This is rare but it can happen.

If you choose to log out while engaged with a pvp'r you will remain on scene for 5 to 15 min. I dont recall the time limit as I dont cut n run like that. with npc's i think u warp after about 1 or 2 minutes.
