I love the "if you got nothing to hide, you got nothing to fear" quote so often used, and to boot in this topic; well I do not intend others to have a piece of my privacy.
Then people retort with "name a legitimate reason to want to be completely anonymous on the Internet".
In the end there's many reasons, some noble and true, others less so. Finding reasons are hardly hard though, so to list a few.
- To the a critisize government, but alas fear negative consequences.
- To blow the whistle on some illegal or unethical behaviour where you work, and fear of losing your job.
- To talk with friends in countries with little or no free-speech, and avoid their no-fly list
- Just to lobby an unpopular opinion / position
- Fighting orginized crime, oh the scary underworld of today.
- Being an Alt on the EVE-O forums, or going around the banhammer (as for a less noble cause in the eyes of CCP)
- Spy on others, for various reasons, perhaps to find out what your other part is writing on that secret forum, or find out what your employees think of you as boss.
- Your collection of japanese naughtyness is something you want to keep quite about.
- Dating online, without the risk for stalkers.
- Out of paranoia.
- Your collection of warez.
There are countless of reasons for it, but in the end wanting privacy, and not a panopticon should suffice for me to be anonymous online.
Now I doubt CCP will start stalking me if I start to date online, or will bother with someones rustic love life, even their less legal operations, and just keep it to eventual cheats. But in the end, any intrusion into my privacy is still that, no matter if it is done for a greater cause, a cause that seldom stops those that actually cares, as if they are not tards will take care to keep it secret either way, or if I say pie it's a go, if I say cake hold.
[EDIT]Oh and besides, the lunacy to force people to run as an admin while online alone tops this idiocy off.
