grats everyone who got the results they wanted
Quote: I dont understand one bit of this...
ok, we do our GCSEs/GNVQs in highschool: A, B, C, D, E etc then in sixth form or further education college we do A-Levels (which are A/S and A2 levels put together) A, B, C, D, E etc or a bunch of other stuff like a btech which works on pass, merit, distinction. What you do in sixth form or further education gives you UCAS points, the higher the grade the higher the points. UCAS points are what gets you into university if you're under 21 (if you're a mature student they seem more likely to let you in, maybe they think you'll be more disciplined or have working experience) Then at university higher education you do an undergraduate bachelors degree (pass,2.2, 2.1, first), and can then go on to get a masters and after that a phd.
Think that's right, if not I'm sure someone will correct me __________________________ Indulge Me |

A 'C' in ICT, a 'D' in History and a 'U' in Chemistry (expected that Chemistry result).
So kinda crap but ah well... I'm gonna go out to the pub anyway and pretend I did brilliantly.
Oh and spelling and grammar have nothing to do with whether you do well in A Levels. Mine is good IMO, but I still did quite poorly.

the math AS level and A2 level was made a lot easier i think 2 or 3 years ago which is a dam shame, it was because the UK doesnÆt have enough people studying these courses and the government and business is worried so some dumb ass though make A-level math easier.
problem is that when you guys enter university and do a math intensive course like erm math :P or physics or an engineering course you are gona have a very hard time!
eiter way wish you all luck,

Nice one
I on the other hand did probably the worst thing and chose to go college and do a BTEC rather than stay on at 6th form and do A levels..
At the end of the day A levels would have been a better education and I could have got into 6th form (GCSE: 3A 5B 1C 1D) however it would have just been another 2 years of school, where as college has been a great laugh and I have enjoyed every minute of my course.
I went on and did a "BTEC : National Diploma IT Practitioners - Software Development" of which I got my results for the first year today as well! My grades were: 8 DistinctionsÆ 1 Merit (Which will be changed to a distinction when I go back, as I know for a fact this is an error - stupid college)
Its not really the same as A levels and you cant compare as my course is much more specialized over them, however just to give you an idea of the marking scheme my course goes: Pass - 2 points Merit - 4 points Distinction - 6 points
I was told however that getting full distinctions for the entire course is equivalent to 3A's in A level so I donÆt know.. IÆm happy either way

Basically they took the Pure 1 modules, moved the harder stuff into Pure 2 and 3 and the decently hard stuff out of Pure 2 and 3 altogether, i saw my sisters syllabus and was like WTF?

I'm happy. I got my A2 results today, and i get to go to my preferred uni :D
And also, A levels are NOT a cake walk, despite what you read in the papers. Congrats to all people who passed :)

Originally by: Xrak Just a word of warning, chemistry at A2, I think is much harder then AS. Did you do coursework or practical exam for mod 3? Thankfully we did practical exam, and I cant explain how much better is is then coursework. Takes less time, its more relevent and you dont get all the people who can write 5 pages of stuff they remembered from a textbook but cant do a simple experiment getting super grades!
Yeah Chem A2 is a ***** to do only just managed to scrap a C, and the coursework just turned out to be jumping through hoops set by the exam board to get as many marks as possible. I also got a B in History, B in Physics and an A in AS business.
Originally by: Xrak And how I wish we had been able to do Computing insted of ICT. ICT is like business studies with computers really. It sucks. Big time.
Yup thats why I didnt bother taking ICT even though im going on to do Computer Science at Uni.

I got an A in Maths, A in History (with 95% marks), and a C in Music. But I blame my teacher.
I know Hippoking got a B in Music Tech, A in Physics, and an A in Maths.
Yes, by the way, 95% marks in History. Please bow at my feet at your conveinience. -- Interseted in skills? Necessary Skills

Chem A2/AS is probably the easiest course to get a decent grade in, spent exactly 2 weeks revising erm actually not revising learning for the first time before the exam and got a medium B
Its just pure memory like a lot of A-levels
The problem with A-levels isnÆt that they are easy it is that they are easy to PASS ,
There where definitely a few Grade B physics/math/chem Students who knew more than the grade A students the only problem was that they where not as good at passing exams
A-levels need to change from testing memory to actual knowledge!

A levels arent that bad tbh if we had 2 years rather than 1 to do them in they would be incredibly easy (see scotland ). Try advanced highers for size. |

Yeah thats prob the main reason why I did well in the subjects that I enjoyed, as personally I found most of the chem stuff boring compared to the physics stuff that I had no problem learning to pass the exam.
History tho is a subject in which you do need a fair bit of intelligence to pass as you need to be able to learn the base knowledge behind it and then construct an arguement .

Heh, bah, AH are easy compared to what highers used to be like. . .. saying that, SYS was the way to go. ^^
Just loved first day of the Chemistry mods in Uni. "Right, hands up who did SYS chemistry? Okay, you people, ignore what you were taught, its mostly rubbish."

Edited by: Archilies on 18/08/2006 15:54:03 It depends on the A-level itself.
e.g. A-levels like sociology, media studies and IT are easy and arent diffuclt to do. English as well but people can be naturally good at that subject.
But some subjects like Maths, Chemistry, Sciences are as hard as nails
GCSE's are just easy
