A fore note:
1) Should this be in the ship channel? Probably. But I'm sure it would get trolled to death instantly so I'm dropping this post in with the science and industry guys as the root of this idea is to aid industry. Dev's will decide. 2) No, I do not need one of these ships floating around my head to suck up all the noxious gas that is emanating from my mouth. Nothing wrong with spit-balling.
So, we mine - we get mining barges/exhumers. We do PI, we get the Primae. We salvage, we get the Noctis, etc.
Is there any reason we don't have an ORE ship dedicated to gas cloud harvesting? Or is this something that might be on the cards? I ask because I live in a WH and have always discarded Ladar sites as a scanning nuisance. Well, now I want to get into T3 production - so I need these clouds.
Obviously we can get by with BC's and BS's, the same way we did with destroyers/BC's for salvaging for so long. But wouldn't it be nice to have a dedicated ship to fill that hole in the industrial equipment market?
A modified mining barge that can support five turrets? A revamped Noctis (cargo hold could be made just about large enough as it is - just tweak the bonuses and hard-points to suit). A new ship entirely? |

It would be very useful especially with the recent buff to boosters and all..
Me like it. |

I used a Myrmidon with the Mining Foreman Link booster. Just fleet with an alt or someone else in the WH for the bonus.

Hurricanes are IMHO the best ship for this atm actually.. you can fit the most cargo on them and the turrets and mining link. Add a bit of ewar and some warpstabs, and you can get away when someone is being mean to you as well. ;)

I have a Hurricane at the moment which I will fit up. Glad I chose that ship then
Like the idea of EWAR and WS. Don't like it when people are mean to me and I haven't got the means to fight back, lol |

a gas mining ship would be a great addition to the indy fleet of eve. for my money it has to be a brand new hull, partly because i dont think anything that would be considerd has already been spoken for IMO but mostly because i like shiney new toys =) |

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have the feeling that were there to be a gas mining ship only, it's only going to have 5 high slots, two mids, and a few lows, with no run for guns or drones, and will be a happy little target like a noctis. I can't speak for low sec but in a hole that just doesn't seem all that great to me. I'll stick with my hurricane that can use guns, a mining link, some ewar, and runs like a mofo. Just my two cents. |

Noctis would be great as it is, if those gas harvesters didn't require a turret hard point

The reason for a new ship is to get some sort of bonus or utility out of it that other ships do not currently provide. Being able to attach a mindlink (like BC's) for mining cycle reduction, or a built in reduction plus a large cargo bay would be ideal. Using BC's right now is just proving the OP's original point, which I think is a good one.
I'd also support random gas clouds from exploration to be added as well with this new ship
Note: there are mining missions that this ship would be useful for as well. Maximze your Industry Potential! - Get EVE Isk per Hour! https://sourceforge.net/projects/eveiph/ |

I use an Exequor with expanders I can get almost 3 k hold. You will only get 4 harvesters on it but it does the job pretty well. |

Yup, I am aware. And I don't use Primae for my PI either for the reason you stated. But that's not the point. The fact of the matter is there is a ship dedicated to PI. Whether it's good at it or not is 'meh'. However, I'm confident that a gas-harvesting ship would NOT be awful. It would have to be better than any of the current 'bastard-ised' ships people currently use.
Here's something T'amber Anomandari Demaleon cooked up, and something along these lines could fit the bill nicely (but obviously each race would have their own varient - unless it was a ship produced by ORE, of course)

What do you think for a bit of fun:
Battlecruiser Skill Level: 20% bonus to cargohold capacity Gas Cloud Harvesting: 5% bonus to Gas Harvester cycle time and 7.5% bonus to Gas Harvester m3 amount per level
*depending on initial size of cargohold, which will obviously have to be different to the standard anyways. |

A modified mining barge that can support five turrets? You want a little toy to harvest gas ? Something cheap and defendless ?
Ah, yes. The Moa. Already ingame. |

ok loving the paint job =)
but i think if a ship along thease lines was ever to fly it would be a new ORE design and as already pointed out would have small or no room for defence |

Agreed, it would most likely be an ORE ship - and I hope it would. But I loved the look of that Ferox and wanted an excuse to link it |

I second this. See no reason for not having a dedicated gas-harvesting ship. As it stands, nothing boosts how much you mine per cycle, and fleet boosting to reduce your cycle time has a minor effect. Far better off just getting the booster to jump in another ship fitted to harvest gas.
Lets face it, why wouldn't ORE make one?? |

If gaz harvester wouldn t use a turet slot, we should be able to use them on any barge.....
Let miners be able to mine everything ......( now the put hidden* slot on ship to see our so cute salvager and tractor beam, let gaz harvested use the same "thing")
*hidden becauseif you got "all" turret slot and get empty high slot on most of ship, since dev work on it, we can see t_beam and salvager |

Probably because its something serpentis should be building. I imagine the skeletal outline of a brutix (wings and nose), with no sides, and big rusty gas tanks instead.

I made a gas harvesting ship as my contribution to the ship design contest a while ago: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=gas+harvester#/d2yhtm1
I would like the the ship design to reveal its function. In this case it would be cool if you could see the gas filling up the canisters. |

I use a Rokh now. Seems safer too. Love the idea, especially that 'seeing the gas fill into the canisters' thing! :) Before I could fly a Rokh I used a Ferox. |
