1. General
After character creation you start the game in a so called "noobie corporation" full of players that just started the game or stayed with that corp. (Example: Caldari State War Academy). Sometimes you will even find alternate characters of recruiters in those corporations who advertise for their own corp or send you ingame evemails to join them. The noob corp has no corp hangars and no corp hierarchy. You should do your tutorial missions and get yourself familiar with control panel, map, station menu and user interface. Join help channel for questions or browse EVE-Oracle (F12) for further information.
2. Define your goals
Decide if you want to play EVE as a freelancer and stay in your noob corp (maybe later join a different npc corp (Example: Caldari Provisions). The other option is to join a player run corporation. You can benefit from that in several ways. Corp activities such as group mining or npc hunting are more profitable when done as a team. You can learn a lot from experienced players. The corp can provide you with equipment/skills/ships.
3. Search for a corporation
Ingame you have different options to find a corporation:
First you can take a look at the offices inside a station. Click on the little blue info icon and you get further information. The corp info shows the name of the CEO, headquarters, callsign, number of members, number of shares, tax rate (taxes are not implemented yet) and sometimes a link to a homepage.
Second you can check info on every player in your local channel to see which corp he belongs to. In the player info window you see his corp logo. Click on it and you get the corp information.
Third you can lookup corporations in your "Peoples and Places" menu (second button on your neocom). Goto search/corporation/type in name. You need to know at least the first part of the corporation name to get a good result or you can just type a few letters and browse what's coming up.
Fourth you can join the "recruiting" channel by clicking on "channels" in your neocom. Recruiters do advertising for their corps there and you can do info checks on them (as described above).
4. Select a corporation
There is quite a few player run corporations in EVE and it is really hard to get an overview as there is no complete corp listing yet. Consider the following when you look for a corporation: - Type of corp (miners/fighters/pirates, allround corp, special operations) - Number of players (important: active members?) - Timezone (when are the members online?) - Location (are they present in your area?) - Your duty in the corp (what will be your obligations?) - Equipment (What can the corp provide you with?)
5. Visit corporation
Most corporations have a public ingame corp channel where you can talk to members and get your general questions answered. If that particular corp has no channel or you cannot find it you can contact the CEO by evemail and ask him to contact you. If he is online you can also open up a conversation with him for that purpose. You can also talk to every other member online.
Some corps do interviews before taking new recruits, some don't. Get a feeling for the people in that corp. Beeing in a corporation has a lot to do with social interaction with the other corp members. You need to like them and trust them as they need to trust you.
I recommend to visit some sort of corp activity to get a feeling for the other corp members and their business.
6. Apply
Formal applications can only be filed at a station where the corp has an office. Select the corp from the station menu and click "join". The application might confuse you a bit as it has quite some checkboxes. If you are not sure what to check just leave them blank and type in a short cover letter. The CEO/Personell Officer will receive you application by evemail and has to approove it. Then you get a confirmation evemail. You have to accept the offer to complete the application process. Once this is done you are in the new corp, get a new corp logo and you have the new corp infos in your neocom.
Further information about hangar access etc. will be provided to you by the corp members.
General advice: - Once you join a new corp your corp channel changes. You loose your noob corp channel - Take your time for a good selection. Do not hurry. Check at least 3 different corps before you decide. - Don't believe everything a recruiter promises you. - Find out if you will be mining for the next months or if the corp has other activities for their members. - Talk about the corps finacial strategy. How much do you have to contribute. What will you get out? - Ask explicitly about active members. The number of corp members in the info window only reflects the numb |

Good guide, although I think the best way to find a corp if you are new to the game is to read the posts in the Corporation forum.

I wish i had read this post beofre i joined my previous corp would of aved a lot of s****y eve mails flying around . noew i javer found a corp that is a lot closer to what I wan't do do in eve

I have tried to bring some light in the darkness for players looking for a corp. Now some short comments for Recruiters/Personell Officers/CEOs:
Recently several cases of corp theft were spotted all over the empires. A result of trusting applicants/recruits too fast and giving them hangar access. What spys do is creating an alt char and spending some of their game time to approach potential corps. Once they are given access to the hangars, they empty them, leave the corp, refine/sell/trade the stuff and delete the alt char. Afaik CCP will not reimburse anything.
Consider the following:
1. Take a close look on the way a potential applicant approaches your corp. Ask him how he found out about your corp. Look at his attitude.
2. Do a security check on his character and let him send you information about his skills/attributes/creation date/ via evemail/e-email. Some corps even require a screenshot of the char selection screen to check for possible alts.
3. Do an interview. Ask some questions a noob would hardly be able to answer and find out if he is telling the truth. Some corps do interviews via teamspeak. Talking 1:1 will reveal easily if somebody is not the noob he pretends to be.
4. Take the applicant/recruit to a corp activity and follow his actions. Find out if he is spending a lot of time with this char or if he is logging all the time to get into his main char. (I hardly believe somebody would invest more than a few days on a complete noob char once he got a high skilled char that needs maintenance and to be active in his "real" corp)
5. Consider the fact that there are recently services of industrial espionage offered. Those spys will even work more professional to infiltrate your corp. Never trust anybody and dont lower your security in the first weeks/months.
6. Create a general corp hangar for new applicants where you drop some low-level stuff for them to use. Give out good equipment only by request and drag & drop from secure hangars. Dont let anybody have access to your blueprints you don't fully trust. (not even viewable access)
7. Until you feel right about the recruit don't send him to a station to file an application. He can work a few days/weeks for your corp without having the corp logo. Once he filed and joined check the character creation date and compare to the statements he made before.
There will always be a risk involved but you need to minimize it. Tell your recruits that it is a general security policy of your corp and no distrust in them.
...and think about your corp webpage: I see a lot of corp pages that give me an exact overview over the corps blueprints/fleet/offices and members. Kinda easy to pick one for infiltration and to know what to get... |

...some advice for CEO's:
Never try the "resign" function of your corp menu if you do not really wanna resign. It is somehow bugged and if you close the confirmation popup window by clicking the "x" the corp closes anyway and all your stuff will be lost and nothing will be impounded.
If you really want to resign make sure to transfer all stuff from corp hangars and corp wallet to your personal hangar/wallet before resigning.

Thanks. I hope some people avoid to join the wrong corp by reading this guide as it happened to one of my new members who was directed to the corp HQ of his first corp in his starter ship and then couldn't get back because it was in a player pirate camped area and he got shot all the time. He almost lost interest in this game but we managed to get him and a few assets out of there. |

am not recruiting (we are but that not purpose of my comments here)
ok in our corp which we call a clan. we do a pledge thing. is for couple weeks. allows for new person to check us and us to check them. after that time they will either be offered admittance as member or asked to leave.
this is good way for new person to get a feel for the corp. and helps reduce some of risk involved. we still offer help and all the free advise.
is just suggestion that some may wish to try or that a potentional recruit may ask for a probationary period.

No need to join any, Ooke. I ran across a few pilots in the last two weeks that joined a corp in their first days and were really unhappy with it. As Eve is getting more players I decided to bump this thread again to give an overview on what to look for.
