A possible workaround was reported here:
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=38412
"I get that authentication error too. The way I found around it is to put in my password wrong, then, it goes through and says it's wrong, then put in the right one and I'm in."
I've tested this and it doesn't work for me, but I havent been able to try yet when the TQ server has resolved, only while its still checking status.
Interesting note: Your PW will still be authenticated as bad if you put in the wrong one, so the AUTH server seems to be ok, at least in terms of bad passwords. When you enter the right PW, however, it doesnt even get to the authenticating stage, which is odd. Hopefully that nugget of info will be of great help to CCP.
Please post here if you find and reliable (or unreliable) workarounds.

I just got in. I didnt use that workaround or anything. Just booted up a fresh start of eve, eneterd my correct password and was able to login.
Note that TQ was labled "checking status" the entire time.
I think perhaps a piece of equipment somewhere if dropping many, but not all authentication requests to TQ.
Keep trying. Enter in a few bad passwords if it makes you feel better, and you will be able to login.

Hi people. I have taken the liberty to lock down a multitide of topics about this issue so we can keep the discussion to one.
I am not a dev of CCP. I am a forum moderator. However I am a techie and I hope that if we can contribute what we know about the issue and disuss it we might find what causes it. I feel it is much better to do this then to flame and bad mouth each other on the board and cause a lot of bad feelings.
So. What do we know?
-Some players are unable to log in. Getting some handshake message from EVE.
-Same issue with forums. (myeve.eve-online.com)
-Not same issue with www.eve-online.com
-Refreshing the board until it works will also get the client to connect, right? _________________________________________________________

cont.
I am not experiencing what you are describing so it will be hard for me to reproduce it and know when/if it is allright. If the problem stops pls post that.
Where are you located? I get a feeling this happens to UK players only. Do you by any chance share the same ISP? Something must be separating you people from the players not having this problem and it'd be good to find out what this is.
Did this start happen after a patch? If so what patch?
In another thread on the issue personal firewalls are discussed. Some say bypassing them has helped them. One thing that springs to mind is that the server during this handshake tries to connect to the client, listening on come TCP port. If you are behind a personal FW and the issue is solved by bypassing it, check for connection attempts in your FW log from the server when the FW is active.
I am unable to do traceroutes from where I am (work) so I cannot check how my packets are travelling to the server. If I am not misstaken though the following is correct regarding the servers geographical location:
-Game server London -Chaos server Reykavik -myeve.eve-online.com London -www.eve-online.com Reykavik
Correct me if I am wrong!

I had the same problem yesterday and sent a email to the support team, this is the reply
We have got a possible fix for this. Please be so kind to try it for us and send us the results back as soon as possible.
1. Start > Run 2. Write: 'cmd' and press 'Enter' 3. Write: 'ipconfig/flushdns' and press 'Enter' 4. Now try to connect to our servers again.
Please let us know if this works for you.

so fast....my call has been out standing for a whole week..im much happy about this as u can imagine.
Quote: I get a feeling this happens to UK players only
JeHova dude whilst this seems to be true for the majority but in the other post you linked there is mentions of places such as Seattle, WA, USA and canada.... at the same time i have friends on the same ISP as myself (plusnet in the UK) who can log in and browse the forum at the same time i cannot (actualy on the phone at the same time trying).
a most confusing issue indeed.
Quote: Do you by any chance share the same ISP? Something must be separating you people from the players not having this problem and it'd be good to find out what this is.
very true... its not randon in who suffers this issue. none of my mates on same isp have this issue..yet another corp member on a diff isp does suffer (but still in the UK)
i also note it dosnt seem like a lag issue as its never slow to log-in. it just logs in fast or dosnt at all. without knowing anything about how its all set up..i can only guess and it whould seem to me as if some where along the line data is dropped/refused as if there was a bad router with an intermittant fualt ? what ever went pop happened the sunday befor last.
why is it effecting some but not others...? the only differance i can see between several of my mates and myself is our IP addy. they use the same ISP...trace's go to thru the same routers.my IP is static. i have asked my ISP if they can change it just to see if it makes any diffs. i cant imagine it would..but dosnt hurt to ask.
one question for you... you say the game servers are based in the uk, however traces to the server IP end up going to iceland.why is this ? its as if we first have to authenticate with a centeral server in iceland which then redirects the cleint back to the game cluster in the UK.
its seem that its this process which is at fault...becasue when you do log in its plenty fast enuf..so its like you keep refreshing and refreshing to get thru to iceland and when you are sucessfull you get a decent con to the game server here in the uk. most odd however is that you get kicked out of the game...so does the cleint have to auth with a server in iceland during play, because it might seem as if you playing just fine and the game dosnt lag a bit it just stops dead as if its waiting for a responce from somewhere and at the same time this happens you lose access to the forum.then you get kicked from game and start all over again.
a most odd and very annoying issue.... i will see if the IP change makes any differeance at all and let you know.
Lates Rancid.
and cheers for not getting the ass with me when i was being uber stroppy as hell....

I'm in Seattle, WA, USA. My ISP is Comcast (cable modem). I've been having no problems connecting up until Sunday, October 5th, 2003. Since then I've had to bypass my router to play or see these forums.
With my router (without software firewall)... * Eve's main website loads fine. * The test server appears fine. * These forums, my account info, and the patches all respond with "Unable to load page" or something like it. No matter how many times I try to reload them. * Tranquility never shows how many people are playing and often shows "Server Down" when it clearly isn't. I have 0% chance to play, it simply won't connect.
Bypassing my router (with a software firewall)... * Can access all of Eve's website, although these forums still act flaky (sometimes need to hit the refresh button a lot to get them to load). * The test server appears fine. * Tranquility is playable, but I often have to make a few attempts to get in. I just keep restarting the game until it shows how many people are playing. I have a decent chance once it shows that (sometimes takes 10 or more attempts). * Once playing, I can play for hours and hours without connection problems.
This is all as of yesterday, which is the last time I tried to use the router. I've been trying every few days or so since the 5th of October.
I hope this information helps.

Forgot to mention that I have been playing for 5 months with my router, right up until Sunday, October 5th, 2003 that is. Something happened that day somewhere in the loop. I'm pretty sure it isn't at my end, for a lot of us had the problems start on that very day.

No ...hell no this problem is not on our end. I have been in the same boat since Sunday of last week also. rouwter conected to 2 computers running 2 accounts not working any more. I can connect to the TQ server if i disconnect my router and just directly connect to the cable modem. After a week and some odd days i got an email telling me that the problem was fixed but guess what...it's not. Im not telling you what to do but, im thinking about stoping payment on these accounts. I have 2 that i pay for and one that belongs to a friend. It's just not worth my time or money anymore !

Edited by: Synapse Archae on 14/10/2003 22:57:46 I agree that the problem started on that day, but I haven't had a problem with in since the first morning when you see all my posts.
Here is a pretty good summary of the information we have:
The customer support team doesn't help much; you will see that earlier posters on this thread already tried flushdns, cache deletion, and even reinstalling the game, with no effect.
The theory of geographic location doesnt work, because many of you are in the UK, but I personally had the same problem on the same day, and I am about an hour out of Los Angeles, California.
Its not a total block: many people with the problem were able to login after several tries, even if tranquility did not show as up yet on their clients.
It probably doesn't have much to do (directly) with home routers, but perhaps some routing routines in general, since I am only behind a personal firewall, and then some university routers, which I obviously didnt change throuought the whole effort.
Finally, the test server was never affected. As far as I can tell all of us saw the test server show up without any issues. A good starting point would be to examine what was different between the packets sent to identify Chaos to the user, and those sent to identify Tranquility. Perhaps the number of users on tranquility pushed the packet size over some important limit, causing some routers to drop them? If thats so we may have more issues as EVE grows.
Hypothesis: Perhaps changes were made to the packets that eve used that make them be dropped on occaison by routers, and sometimes not, depending on how much or what type of information they carried? For now the problem seems to have dissppeared for me, but thats my best guess.

I think I have the answer to this. Iceland telecom is as far as I know a partner in the EVE Online project.
Look at this, the last router to answer when tracing to the game server. For me it seems this is a sub domain of CW (Cable and Wireless) dedicated to Iceland Telecom.
iceland-telecom-ltd.Thamesside.cw.net [166.63.21 7.6]
The game servers are hosted on the CW backbone in London (Thamesside) and the lease is on Iceland Telecom
Tonight, I'll be at home so I can do a trace from there to the game server. I'll post it so we can compare it to you traces from places where things don't go well.

Rancid Mare,
I was unable to do the planned trace from home last night. My ISP had decided to have "Temporary service problems". This did however give me time to read a good book.
Let's keep this thread to try and solve your and the other players problems. I have no insight on the other issues you want feedback on, I am sorry.

IO had the same problem. it can be resolved by going to the command screen and typing ipconfig /flushdns.
It maybe caused due to a change in server name and you need to allow the dns to resolve the new name. Don't think it will be a problem any more but in case anyone does have a problem the solution should work. |

Quote: IO had the same problem. it can be resolved by going to the command screen and typing ipconfig /flushdns.
im sorry to say but i think people are barking up the wrong tree with the flushdns command.
the flushdns command simpley resets the TEMPORARY dns cache. this cache is deleated and recreated each time a pc is rebooted.
seen as this problem has been aparent for nearly two weeks and people will have rebooted numerous times, we can only conclude that this flushdns command is not a solution at all. and even if it was due to the cache being reset with each reboot it could NEVER be a permanat solution. otherwise the problem whould have dissapeared the first time you rebooted after sunday the 5th.
add to this the fact that if you use the networkAdvanced=1 in your prefs.ini then you can connect directly via an IP address totaly circumventing and DNS issues at all.
doing this seems to have no impact on the sucess rate of logging in.
so we can definatly and compleatly rule out the flushdns command as having any effect at all.
due to the intermittant nature of the problem i can only assume any relation between logging in and running this comand is nothing other than a lucky coincedence.
now im fast running out of effort to keep bothering with this topic/game so one last try.
FIRST we need for CCP to aknoledge there is a problem...if we cannot do this then we may as well give up now. no iffs or buts...CCP must respond. and preferable here in the roum where we can all participate. failer to do and so the rest of us can either hope this issue resolves itself or we may as well leave now.
SECOND we need to figure out if this is a end user issue or a single issue elsewhere. if we take into account the fact all people are reporting this issue started at the same time on the same day..then there are two senarious we chould consider..
firstly that a multitude of persons all did something at the same time on this day to recreate the same problem. taking into account the quantity of people with the problem and also the variation or different ISP's and hardware set-ups...then this senario looks to be highly unlikley indeed.
the second senario is that a single issue happened somewhere that is effecting all these people. this however seems to fit the bill perfectly.
i would ask anyone who thinks the first senario is more probably to explain their logic for making this decision.. this also include CCP...please do read and reply.
THIRD we need to locate the issue and deal with it. following the logic that this must be a single issue effecting multi users IT CANNOT BE AN END USER ISSUE. the issue must lie outside. just becasue some people do not suffer this issue this in no way PROVES the problem is not with-in CCP network, and to suggest so is very poor logic indeed.
so the problem MUST lie either with CCP directly or a point where all these users converge on route to CCP's systems. this sould not be too difficult to nail down...how ever its only something CCP can do as they have the intamate knoledge of the game/system that we do not.
Conclusion now this is where we are well and truly stuck. as long as CCP continue to treat this as an end user created problem, we will never be able to nail this fault down. all we the end user can do is assist with any information we can.
trying to deal with each user via email directly is both waste of time and highly unproductive. it whould be far far more efficient if CCP could do the decent thing and bring the conversation to the forum where we can all read and assit......
NEXT STEP can we please have a member of CCP who is both technicaly able and willing to assist. please come and join this conversation and like today. i see no valid reason why a direct request of this nature sould go both unheard and unactioned by CCP. once we have this support and help we can work together to figure out where this problem lies.
if we cannot take this first very simple step we may aswell all give up now.

I will support Rancid Mare on this one. Even though I don't have the problems myself, his point is abosolutely valid.
I think our main problem is that the problem is neither ours nor is it CCPs, but some ISP (Iceland Telecom, perhaps?) with an odd piece of equipment. Its cetainly not an easy bug to track, but if CCP can put a representative here I will be fully at his/her disposal in searching for a solution.

Rancid Mare, I agree that flushing the local DNS cache will not solve this for all users. However it seems that it helps for some so I would like to encourage players with problems connecting to at least try this solution.
On the issue with you and others beeing unable to connect I am pretty much puzzled. If it was only the game I would have guessed on this:
AFAIK there are a number of nodes (Physical servers) that you can connect to. One node can handle a number of solar systems and when you jump you sometime gets transferred to another node.
What if some nodes are having problems with for instance their NICs? For some reason set to Simplex or just malfunctioning for som other reason. Is it so that all players having this problem are all on the same node?
What speaks against this theory is first that it is the login that fails. I'd guess that logins all go to the same "login server", but perhaps you do login to the last used node. Another thing that speaks against it is that you are having problems with the myeve website aswell.

I got to thinking (and a reply from customer service prompted it) about software I installed on or around October 5th, 2003. My first reaction is absolutely not. Luckily I had a second reaction. I came to realize that I do use the automatic update feature in Windows. Not a week goes by where it isn't installing some security patch (or so it seems). So I went to Microsoft's website and they list the things they've installed automatically for me. There were 2 things that were installed on October 4th, 2003.
* Security Update for Windows Media Player (KB828026) * October 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB828750)
That second one really makes me wonder. That's hardly a trivial install by the sounds of it.
Before I jump up and down with joy for having found a smoking gun, I should point out that I played well into the night that Saturday and technically well into the next morning. The gun would be downright sizzling if these items were installed on Sunday, but are merely warm to the touch being installed on the previous Saturday.
However, I also wonder if these updates weren't installed on some other computer. Say, perhaps, during the downtime if you catch my drift. Just a thought. I'd also be curious to know if anyone else who can track their problems back to that Sunday on October 5th also had these installed or autoinstalled on that Saturday the day before? Might be worth checking. Could also possibly explain why only some have the problem.

Shorin,
In this thread GM Xhagen speaks of a problem caused by another IE patch. Perhaps there is a connection.
Have you tried to uninstall your patch and check for any improvements in EVE connectivity? _________________________________________________________

I recived an email 2 days ago telling me that this was my problem and not CCP. So there you have it folks! Seems like to me they have washed their hands of this. At least it seems they have with my issue. I have the problem of connection to the server with a router.I split cable connection with 2 PC to run 3 accounts on eve(this problem has been on going since the 5th). Now since Monday of this week i not only can not connect with the router but even when i bypass the router the log in % is about 60% of the time. Hope some of you are having better luck than I...but i dont think i will be around long enough to see them fix this. See ya on the "warp side".....ahh never mind i wont be able to log in !!!!

Red Button can you tell us who you are ? either yor a player trying to be sarcastic... (not sure why) or you are CCP but dont have the GM prefix or any referance to being CCP in your post.
if you are CCP i would sugest you make a tad more effort when posting concerning this problem. after weeks of effort from the customers we are NOT going to be happy with 3 lines of text. exspecialy when you say "I just wanted to let you know we are not turning a blind eye."
now i have promised Polaris Jehova i would keep this civil.... but you are taking the royal **** there. not turning a blind eye ? no your turning two blind eyes whislt stinking your head in the sand whist repeating "theres no place like home" total compleat and utter avoidance of the issue is putting it lightly.
so please lets see who you are.... and if you are infact Gm then please treat us with the respect we deserve.
Jehova dude the email you forwarded onto Pann. i have not heard anything at all. no one has bothered to reposnd to that email at all. ofcourse this is no real surprise.
i simple refuse to continue wasting my freetime on this game/issue...i have tried very very hard to get some progress on this topic and now its down to CCP, but as always they seem to be failing of a magtitude i didnt think was possible.
its late and im tired... will check the forum tommorow am... either there will be hope to carry on ...or more dissapointment..
i dont want or can handle any more disapointment... so i will say my farewell now. its been fun (some of the time) see you all in the big exspance they call the WEB.

Hi all! I have the same problem. I use a D-Link router and when I bypass it (take it away) the game seems to be working. So I tryed to change all kind of setting in the router and it looks like I made the game work. I can connect now! What I did is changed my router's MAC adress to my network card's MAC adress. This way the login sreen don't show me anymore that server is down.

Hi everyone.
Thanks for letting us know, Aariel. We'd be interested to hear if someone else has had success using the same workaround.
Red Button is a member of our server team, those of you that read the Dev Blog pages will be familiar with him.
We realize that this issue is a frustrating one for those of you that are unable to connect. This does not seem to affect very many players however, and we have so far not been able to find any faults from our end that could be causing this. We continue to look for the cause and hopefully this will be cleared up as fast as possible.
I'd like to point out that CCP and the GM team does not offer support through the forums, although we do read them and take note of current issues. The proper way to get in touch with us is through email.

yes well we do try to use email support unfortunately this dosnt seem to work. i really fail to understand your reluctance to get involved in the forum. it is the fastest most efficient way to deal with these group issues..
here is a for instance... all the temp solutions to this issue so far have been the work of the players and they have sahred this on the forum.
all the offered solutions from CCP have been the usall....or have just been copied from this tread.
gotta laugh when a user posts concerning the MAC addresses and i reply... then the folowing day i get sent his suggestion from Eve support. goes to show that is forum is the fastest way for the user to gain help and email support comes a very poor second.
can only assum CCP would rather not have open discussion where they are very much at inspection of the paying customers.
without tempting fate i have noticed after the recent server work the game seems a lot more happy..the forum can still stall a bit but the game seem to log in with out the same problems we have been having all week.
id still be interested to know what red button has found out...and when he says they are working on this issue. i would like to know if there is continuity between the dev team and the support team. as it whould seem the Dev team know something..which hasnt been told to the support team which in turn mean they cannot support the users.
madness.

I tried uninstalling the patches from Microsoft that were installed on October 4th. That didn't have an effect. I then opted to try setting my router's MAC address to the network card's address. That didn't work either (it was already set to that when I first installed the router). I've also tried turning off all the security that the router provides by using the DMZ feature, which it claimed was good for gaming although exposes my computer to considerable internet risk (so I used a software firewall while doing so). The only thing that seems to work so far is physically removing the router and going directly to the cable modem (not a good long term solution).

Shorin, when using your router, do you have problems with both this website and the game or is it just the game?
If it is only the game, look in your router if there are failed connection attempts from the game server to your conputer inside the router. This should be loggable.

Jehova,
For the 5 months leading up to October 5th: * Can access all of Eve's website including forums and Account Management on first attempt. * Can play on Tranquility on first attempt. * Everything behaves normally (other than known bugs that affect all).
When using the router since October 5th: * I can access most of Eve's website. * I can see how many people are playing on the test server and could therefore probably play there (have not tried). * I cannot access these forums (shows as "Unable to Load Page" or something like that), Account Management, or play on Tranquility (shows as "Server Down"). * I can access other websites. * I can access other websites' forums. * I can make secure online purchases through other websites.
Post October 5th bypassing the router: * I can access Eve's main website without fail. * I can access these forums and account information but not always on the first attempt (10% failure perhaps requiring me to reload the page, seems much worse at peak times). * I can play on Tranquility but not always on the first attempt (sometimes it gets stuck checking server, sometimes stuck authenticating, once again seems worse at peak times). Just quiting and trying again gets me in after a few attempts. * Test server always shows as fine (at least when I know it is up).
I should also add that I am using Windows 2000. I tried to simply access these forums on the other networked computer (through the router) with this primary machine turned off. I was able to see Eve's main website but once again not access these forums. That machine had not had its operating system patched on October 4th and is using Windows 98. Therefore, anything installed on my gaming machine would have a hard time being the problem when it was turned off if you catch my drift.
Hopefully this will all get straightened out soon.
Thanks for keeping this dialogue going.

Edited by: Scorpyn on 20/10/2003 10:31:26 I run a linux firewall at home (Slackware 8.1 with iptables, kernel 2.4.20 I think), and I have no problem connecting. From the outside (EVE Servers) it looks like the firewall is connecting, useing the firewall's MAC. However, the packets are NAT:ed to my comp behind the firewall, on a 192.168.0.x network.
2 possible errors (and fixes): 1. Your DNS Server might be broken, try another one (dunno any ip to a working public DNS server though ) 2. Your firewall might only accept your own connection to the EVE server, and not the related incoming "reply-connection" from the EVE server (this does not explain the forum issue though). (Adding your comp to a demilitarized zone might fix this, but then there wont be much of a point having a firewall)
btw, I live in Sweden and my ISP is Bredbandsbolaget (for tech team routing problem resolving)

1. That made a lot of sense so I went looking for alternative DNS servers. I found some but unfortunately it didn't solve my problem. I'm not positive I did it right but I'm pretty sure. When I put in bogus IP addresses nothing worked, when I put in the alternate public ones I was able to access eve's main website but not the forums again. I'm now back to just using the automatic ones that my ISP provides. 2. I tried the demilitarized option a few days ago and used my software firewall (ZoneAlarm) to protect me (since I can play the game with it when I bypass the router). No luck, still couldn't see these forums with the router.
Great ideas though. Thanks for trying.

Edited by: Scorpyn on 21/10/2003 08:09:49 I've had problems with ZoneAlarm - it might be causing the problem, but I don't think so... but you should try another firewall software anyways...
It might be a problem with your proxy server too if you have one (disable proxy if possible)
And one more thing, about the game login - your ISP might block the port for some reason (perhaps it's also used by a worm or filesharing program or something?), or it might block the port the EVE server is useing to connect back to you. If this is the case, all clients will have to be updated and the EVE servers have to change the port(s).
If the EVE servers are always connecting to you on the same port, you could forward that port from the firewall to your computer (only allowing one person per firewall to play the game )

Well it's been almost 3****ing weeks and notting yet. I have done everything they ask to do(possible fixes) and notting. I sure im sick of this.Running with out a router is BAD and the only way i can connect it's with out it.(HALF THE TIME THAT IS) I will not do with out my firewall,4 much longer. This just plain rude, haven't recived any new emails from anyone telling me that they are still working on this. SURE WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR FROM SOME ONE AT CCP LETTING US KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO FIX THIS .

Primo x, if you can play without a router and when using one you cannot play, I get the feeling it is a router configuration problem that is your problem. I think different players in this thread are having the same symptoms, but not the same cause. Yours is probably the router.
Do you have the same problem as other players with this website or it it just the game client that you cannot connect with?

On October 5th something happened that stopped quite a few of us from being able to use our routers. You didn't see much here in the way of posts because people simply could not get to these forums. I played for 5 months behind my router until that point. Please give the following thread a read, perhaps there is info that will help to sort it all out. If we knew what changed on that day, it might offer some insight on what we can do to fix it.

I've also started having some problems with logon lately. My problem is that it takes a lot of time, I press connect again (dunno if this really matters), and after a while I get connected.
The problems ppl are having with the forum could be due to a broken dns server somewhere. In this case, it's probably almost impossible to fix it. I'm gonna try to get a ip to a working public DNS, so that we can test whether this is the case...

I started having this problem on the 5th like everyone else.Everything was fine till then.I can't open the forum or "player website" things from my home(at work right now)with or with out the router. Even at work these issues are still there, the forums can be displayed half the time if that. The only diferent situation is that i used my router to run 3 Eve accounts at the same time.(diferent computers one internet connection) Nothing is wrong with the router cause i can get any where else on the web just not anything to do with EVE. The only way i can get in and change skills and do some playing is to by pass the router and only log with one account.....that will work about 45% of the time as i still have to wait for ever to do the "handshake" thing. Some times it tells me that" no internet connection was established" anygaming server or games load fine. Is this still my problem? I'm not sure that it is. Thanks for at least reading these post in here cause we are ALL in the same boat.

This instance started today after I got disconnected from the web. This post will be very long because IÆve had this problem before and it may be related to some other issues, which I describe. For some reason, half of this post vanishes, so it is now 2 posts.
Here is the most detail I can give (writing this when trying to log in):
..starting Eve screen.. EULA.. I hit accept Tranquility is OK, Test is incompatible (as it should be). Both tell me the number of users online, looks about right connecting..so far, so good.. getting characters (modem receives and sends a few kb of data for less than a second)..stalling. News window doesn't bring up anything other than the spinning icon. Modem sends a few hundred bytes of data every second or so. Not receiving any data. Still getting characters (stuck with the bar at about 20%)..Modem doing the same as before.. Internet connection drops (in the same way that it would had I taken the line out of the computer), characters screen vanishes, and the Eve login menu brings up a pop-up saying "The connection to the server was closed.," Tranquility - server down, test - server down. trying to reconnect to the internet, modem doesn't quite sound right. After a minute (more time than it takes to connect to the web), I cancel connection and refresh a non-Eve page. Comp reconnects without a problem. -test finished.
OK, here is some background data; the 'getting characters' message stays up for about 8 seconds, with no changes to anything except the background images. None of my 3 characters load, nor does the news. I am trying to load the news from the Eve login menu right now. Got the news after 15 seconds.
When loading characters, I can right-click and cancel the loading characters process and close the Eve window (I am running in windowed mode). When loading characters, my modem will not receive any data. If I end the loading characters process and close the window before disconnecting, I can load a web page and I stay connected to the internet. In the past, when closing Eve before disconnecting, my web connection would drop when I did not try to load a web page. Retrying (this will be shorter): authenticating took a few seconds.. loading characters problem cancel loading characters and close Eve. modem does not disconnect, and I can load a web page. -end test2 (told ya it was shorter)
As I have said, problems that were almost the same happened in the past, over several months. On the first day I had Eve (2 or 3 days after release), I was unable to load the character creation screen until about 3 days later. Two or so months after that, I started getting login problems (like the one I just described). Upgraded graphics card drivers, same problem. Couldn't upgrade drives for my sucky soundcard, though (couldn't find new drivers until much later, and the site didn't really organize them). A week ago, I got a new sound card. I have directX version 9.something. Graphics card drivers are up-to-date as of about 3 weeks ago (geforce4 Mx 440, I believe). Windows Xp, fully patched as of 3 weeks ago. I don't have the windows auto-update. Windows Xp was put on as an upgrade to a patched version of Windows 2k. Ok, so this problem has existed through 2 hard drives (my current one is a Maxtor drive, of course), 2 sound cards, 2 different installations of Windows xp, 2 different internet accounts (with the same ISP, which I doubt anyone else in Eve uses). The only things that havenÆt changed are my graphics card, the Windows Xp disk, and the Eve disk. Oh yeah; every time I start windows, I get a message saying it can't launch winnt/system32/system32/... or whatever, it just has a lot of 32's and Windows can't find it. Might have something to do with my adware-remover, which caught a blaster virus for me. Windows keeps trying to install the same patch, but I can't think of any other problems with the exception of a Remote Access Control Manager error back when I installed Windows xp (kept me from setting up an internet connection).
Restarting comp. In the past, restarting hasnÆt really worked. OK, comp restarted, got online without problem, and got eve to start (it actually loaded my characters!). Disconnects from internet while I type, no character selected. Another bad sound from my modem when trying to get online again. Close and restart connection, now it sounds normal.
Trying to log in again, takes a while to authenticate.. Nope, canÆt load characters. Seems that there is some command telling my computer to disconnect from the internet, and being unable to load characters delays it for a few seconds.

Part 2: OK, here are my idealized conclusions (pretty much uneducated guesses):
Eve has a problem (not my comp), and it causes a severe delay when loading characters or an error to occur when loading characters, which effectively stops the process. Most likely, something trips an error that prevents me from getting data from the server and forces my modem to only get Eve stuff when Eve is loading characters. Character loading crashes, and terminates my internet connection as well (crash is triggered by something and does not change. Eve has some process that does not end when Eve crashes, so the problem comes back where it æleft offÆ (before the crash, of course, but some bugged part of Eve did not end and will continue to cause problems until I restart my comp or until after I do something else that stops it). Or, Eve saves something which makes sure the error happens again and again and again, but it doesnÆt permanently save all the data to crash Eve, just enough to make sure the problem can get itself going again. Most likely, it is a bit of both. Eve saves an error so the problem will start again (even after restarting the computer), and a process involving the problem isnÆt ended. So, after the initial try after my computer restarts, I will continue to get the problem described in the long test. Because this has happened to me before, I think it is a problem on my Eve disk, a compatibility issue with my graphics card or modem, or the game has a coding error that affects only some computers. It does not seem to be related to my graphics card drivers or sound card, and DirectX is not a likely reason for the problem, either. Because similar happens to other people, I think there is a general bug that is triggered by something in Windows (something which not everyone has, because windows does not give everyone the same problems). For this instance of the problem, it started after I was disconnected from the internet while playing Eve. Either that started it, or I was disconnected because the problem decided to appear then. I was able to play Eve yesterday, but I was on an alt because I wanted to make sure the location of my main did not cause a previous error that crashed Eve (also at login/character selection), which was before my internet line had problems so I couldnÆt get onto the web at all.
On my old hard drive, a virus called w32.pinfi prevented Eve from working. Scan your computer for it. If you have the virus, youÆll probably notice that it replicates itself into EVERYTHING, including Norton files (5 of them), Eve files (3 of these, including the login stuff) and Windows patches (every single one that I got after the virus entered my computer), so it will take time to remove it. IÆm not sure if Norton can remove all the copies of it, though. Last time I tried, it deleted 474 copies out of 479 total, so the virus kept infecting new stuff. I am not using any firewalls or virus scans (with the exception of the adware remover) because they seem to have absolutely no effect except to get in the way (even longer story).

I have been reading the posts on this thread, and I have the same problem....
I have a D-Link DI-614+, and enabled the necesssary ports on the firewall configuration.
Sounds like if trafic is moving (according the a net sniffer i downloaded) but gets screwed up somewhere. Probably the client is mis-interpeting the info.
I'm no developer of the game, just thought you needed to know

Edited by: Scorpyn on 06/12/2003 02:06:41 Found on eve.se (translated into english and slightly modified - original post made by mrmille) :
###Message begins### Allow tcp-connections on port 1079 to 157.157.139.10 (EVE server)
Allow tcp-connections on port 26000 from 157.157.139.10 (EVE server)
If you have a firewall/router, also forward port 26000 (tcp) to the computer you play EVE on. ###Message ends###
Hope this helps... also try the latest patches...
If the packets gets screwed up, I believe it might have something to do with fragmenting and that the packets might be too large for some firewalls/routers. Not sure about that though...
