I have a few "work" friends but we don't socialize outside of work hours... My RL friends know I have a strict 'No Loinspawn' policy when it comes to my place. My work associates are the fun ones to talk to EVE about, as after about ten minutes or so they're looking at me like I'm the crazy cat lady from the Simpsons... and they're probably right. |

If beyond that, they show interest in the game, I'll explain it to them. Those two first steps really save a lot of time and frustration, for both parties. |

This is basically my technique for getting friends to play Eve.
"Ohh, Eve, yeah...well, it's kinda a difficult game. Hard to understand. Pretty sure you won't get it."
It isn't really hard, but I think there are customers that you can lose in a good way and there's customers that you can lose in a bad way. If people come in and fundamentally don't like EVE Online, then I think that might be a good way of losing customers. . -á--CCP Soundwave

I tell them about the beautiful nebula and other outer space imagery. How cool the stations look. How much fun mining is. The awesome hallway on the other side of the CQ door. I tell them about the hyper-realistic submarine physics. I describe the blue doughnut and about bored null sec denizens. How not to expect a fair fight. NO really, make sure it isn't fair. I then tell them they probably won't like the game because it doesn't suit their personality.
And finally, if they survive the trial I say, "Good night. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely pod you in the morning." |

EvE is a fickle mistress I daresay, I have attempted to explain EvE in many ways to my friends, yet I have never managed to convince anyone to try it.
Best MMO of the market? ''El Oh El, we got wow'' ''Oh its too much of a bother to try'' ''Oh I don't like space very much'' ''Oh its just your generic MMO'' ''Oh I like FPS because I am too braindead to use my head'' '' Oh you are too old to play vidya games''
I sometimes wonder if it has something to do with age, I have played a lot of MMO's and video games since I was not-so-small brat, I guess I'm just burned out of the same crap ever since ever.
Am I turning into a hipster? Every single person I know plays the same yearly generic game yet I am here being a bitter ******* about not having real life friends to play with, I am forced to rely solely on the players of EvE for content.

Here is the thing, most people I know who play MMO's all started off with games like UO, EQ, WOW etc, like most of us here.
The reason they do not like Eve, is because they feel there is no end goal.
Let me try and explain.
In your traditional MMO you have a level cap to aim for and group content to accomplish. To do this you have to grind virtues, armour, weapons blah blah blah.
Now most of the people I know play 2 - 3 MMO's at the same time. Once they complete all the relevant content they move onto the next game, and then to the next game and usually by that time the first game will have received new content and the process starts again.
The problem they all have with Eve is that they do not see any end goal.
I can point out that there are many things they could do but they just reply what is the point.
What is the point for doing x, y and z to earn isk so they can PvP if it doesn't accomplish anything.
I point out that they can do FW and you can earn isk whilst you PvP. Great, what happens in FW they ask..
Well you PvP, there is no real accomplishment, doesn't really mean anything.. they do not like this.
What about living in null sec... erm, lets skip that one..
It is hard to convince people who are use to working towards a goal to play a game that has no real goals for a small group. |

That seems like the mentality nowadays, but what happened to making your own fun?
Different mindset I guess, but I think the ''make your own fun'' mindset is for the old-ish people while the ''themepark'' content is for the younguns.

Also, how the hell does one make time for 2 to 3 mmos at the same time? I find that even one single game is enough to hold all of my time.
Variety is the spice of life but you need content as well to keep you full, what use is a lot of flavor but no full belly?
Personally I think age has very little to do with it. All people I know who do not like Eve are 30+ with families.
There is lot to be said making your own fun but on the flip side Eve like all games is repetitive. For some people blowing space ships with no real end goal can get tiresome quickly.
As for playing all those games, it doesn't take much to burn though new expansion packs when you are not starting from fresh. |

EVE may be repetitive but at least the numbers always go up. I've played a number of other MMOs, and enjoyed them for quite some time, but eventually I realized that the level bar wasn't enough to motivate me.
In EVE I'm a Care Bear at the moment largely due to not having a lot of time to play. Yet at any point I can undock in some random ship, make 20 jumps in a random direction, and blow up some random player without having to fuss with timers or rules. It doesn't even matter how long they've been playing or what corp they might be in. True such actions could have massive consequences but it's much more organic than any PvP I've done in other MMOs.
Plus if I'm going to spend days grinding to buy things that cost massive amounts of money, I'd much rather own an epic space ship than a piece of armor.
For me I probably wouldn't try to explain EVE, I'd get them to set up a trial character and throw them head first into the game. If they survive that then they'll be fine. |
