WoW added almost 50% players (subscribers?) after recent expansion - 3 millions total. Suddenly, instead of stagnating game we have explosive growth.
I hope one day EVE management will realize that no trailer, battle-based PR, empty promises, re-skins, debugs/balance may be compared to financial effect of actual expansion of gameplay.
p.s. interesting method to create a trailer. |

Umm, what? You're talking about a huge multi-million dollar investment in content growth within a game that has millions of players playing one IP (World of Warcraft) and even more within message reach that are currently deactivated (players that left World of Warcraft) within the same IP. That's not accounting for the millions of others playing other IP's under the same publisher such as StarCraft, Warcraft, Diablo and now, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.
And that's just talking about their current and past customer base who would listen. Then you have the huge marketing budget to actually promote the new expansion to everyone else, both new and old who have not received the message, "Hey, WoW has a hot new expansion! Check it out!"
EVE will continue to thrive off their niche market for another 10 years because at the end of the day, you don't need millions of players to still be successful. They could likely run this game on much, much lower for a very long time.

+1 and well said.
I thiink you'll find a very vocal minorty of forum posters who don't really like EVE but play it for some kooky reason or another, and they will always try to find ways to spin a situation into "see CCP , you need to give me something more because you will make more money if you do, also think of the children".
I think you're right, EVE could survive with a lot less subscribers and still be profitable enough to continue, though I don't see that ever happening. The main people who think "EVE is dying" are the people who kind of want it to (almost) die so that CCP will change the game more towards their personal rpeferences. This is why EVERYTIME a new game is announced, they same old crew proclaims it will kill EVE (the short list is SWG, SWTOR, Black Prophecy, Jumpgate, Star Trek Online and now Elite + Star Citizen).
Funny side note, it's Not just an EVE thing lol. |

Well, it depends on the business operations behind closed doors, but I would suspect CCP could run EVE online with a very small development team and very small operations team with a very small player base for a very long time on very little resources.
That's just my 2 cents though. I've been in EVE for 10 years and have worked in the industry (now retired) for some years too. EVE is an amazing game that has really captured their audience. To think they need WoW numbers to survive is really saying EVE should have died a long time ago. Then to question their strategy having faced amazing odds is to say you don't know EVE at all. Those of us who have been here when CCP took the journey to where it is today already know the are in this for the very long haul.

p.s. interesting method to create a trailer. There's always that one guy who doesn't get it. I agree with Her Somewhat theres more to Growing a Player Base however I wont go into details. The facts are WOW has over 30k viewers on twitch Tv and7.8 subscribers playerbase so it does win the Popularity contest. I will give credit due CCP is trying to save this game maybe If they Do a Game of thrones tv series called Eve Who knows maybe it will get is 1 million more subscribers a day (CCP if you ever do cast a TV series PM at http://www.twitch.tv/s0lo/profile) The queston How is Eve Online going to aquire at least 1 million subscribers and of course not die?

TLDR: ***Potential flame material warning*** These are my opinions and opinions only.
A friend of mine posted this trailer on facebook. To which I posted:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMSjd6HNQdY&index=57&list=FLuXNGoPRvBEYnKqhBtRv9OQ
I then followed up with:
"New mechanics have come into play that will probably kill such large scale battles. What's more, the alliances involved/advertised rarely (if ever) recruit. They are made up of comfortable alts that run so called 'noob swarms' with each player having a kill/mining quota. The aforementioned new mechanics will also serve to cut the numbers of these alliances so recruitment is certainly out of the window."
Imho, null sec hinges on the renters now. If I had my say, no renting. Either fight for that space or wait until it becomes unsustainable to hold, then take it. Rentsec sounds like a terrible idea. Though in defence of Eve Online I did finish by saying:
"Eve Online is a good game, in fact it's a great game with great people so long as you understand a few vital points: Everyone wants you ship/loot/life, trust nobody. You will never see most of the nullsec/endgame content. It is owned by superpowerful alliances that don't want you running those missions. If you want the rewards you must buy it from said alliances, if you want the story..... sorry but it won't happen."
I have returned after a few years of inactivity not because of the trailer, but because eve is a great game even with all of it's flaws. However I do remember the ol' "Scam an alliance" trailer. Yeah, that one made me quit as I had recently suffered a similar fate. lol.

One of my favorite EVE sayings apply: if you aren't having fun in a sandbox, it's not the sands fault.
I know it's the internet, but dear icleandic space God, I didn't realize so many neurotic haters existed till I read various comments about how the trailer isn't real EVE. Hell, I deal with people accused of crimes in real life and THEY aren't as hateful as people on the internet are when the subject is a video game they dislike lol. |

I didn't say I don't have fun. Far from it, if I hated the game I wouldn't have come back, nor would I have said it's a good game. I'm just bringing the trailer down to a more realistic peg. If you aren't friends with the right people you are consigned to high sec.
@ Jenn; it's true, if you're not having fun in a sand box it isn't the sands fault. (lets use the analogy of kids playing in a literal sandbox) I can have all the fun I want, but there are a whole bunch of other, bigger kids who's opinion towards me is everything from "Stay out of our way (nbsi) to this isn't your sandbox, it's mine". It's a trap that falls upon any game that gives the players as much power, but I digress.
I have plenty of fun in eve, I just disagree with the balance of power amongst an elite few players..... bo ho me.

This is a lie ('misunderstanding of the game' isn't a strong enough term here).
The gates out of high sec don't generate a pop up asking "who sent you, are you friends with the right folks" before letting you jump to low or null or wormhole space. The stations in low and npc null doesn't ask this question either. The npcs in low, null or wormhole space don't deflect your bullets like wonder woman's bracelets if you're in the wrong alliance.
EVE is a sandbox MMO, and like all sandbox MMOs there is a benefit to grouping up, but none of that prevents a person from living purely solo. plenty of people do it and many don't even live in high sec. If you're in high sec it means either you want to be there or you don't want to be there but you're too anti-social to make friends (any friends, not just 'the right ones') or not competent enough of an EVE player to fly a ship that can fit a cloak and/or dock in an npc station.

The 2 areas of your post I highlighted illustrate what has to be part of your problem with EVE (or how you perceive EVE). "Others players don't want me to do things" has been the mantra of many uncreative and unambitious players since the dawn of multiplayer games.
(I mean ALL multiplayer games, not just electronic ones, thousands of years ago some dude playing an ancient form of chess complained about the same thing, and for the same reason, to psychologically mask his own lack of ability lol).
That there are people to compete against is the PURPOSE of a game like EVE. Where you see barriers (that somehow hold people in high sec), others of us see minor obstacles which have to be dealt with and understand that fun comes from dealing with (outsmarting) those obstacles. If the 'barriers people' spent near as much time trying to figure things out as they spent giving up then complaining about NBSI on some forums, they'd have beaten down those barriers by now.
The last part, the part I underlined, demonstrates a rather fail mindset, and one demonstrated by many a misplace thempark player in EVE. Themepark games shield players from 'undue' influence of other players .
Sandbox games do not, sandboxs allow nature to takes it's course, with sandbox-freedom resulting in natural inequality between the capable and the incapable (and also resulting in the also natural phenomenon of the incapable complaining about the natural order of things on the nearest forum).

Of course, I had to run from a Heretic, which provided a good time playing Hunt for Red October, but I did it all solo (like actually solo, single character). I also mainly PvP solo, which means losing a lot, but it also means the wins are that much sweeter. tbh there really isn't any "end game content" in EVE, it's a sandbox.
Unless you're talking titans or something, in which case get some friends because they need a fleet and an alliance to back them up.

This is a good quote for people who don't understand nor how to truly play the game.
I'm not saying that to be insulting or mean. It's just that, from the 10 years I've played this game, I've never really played well with others. I've mostly always been solo and yet, I still manage to get into any content I want.
I mean, yes, it's difficult if you're not invited to the party, but that's what EVE is all about -- crashing the party if you want too. Who is going to stop you? Surely not the developers in almost all cases.
The problem is that so many players are used to game developers holding their hands and saying, 'Yes, you should have access to this content. Let me make you a private instance and virtually remove all human interaction from your experience unless they are apart of your approved list of course."
That's not EVE. No hand hold here. You get a ship, some guns and a nudge in the right or wrong direction. And for that, that's why I mentioned you don't understand nor know how to truly play this game if your only come back is, "you are consigned to high sec."
No, you are not.

Dead WRONG. There are new, PUBLIC NPSI groups forming all the time, ala the old Bombers Bar and now Spectre Fleet being the largest. Matter of fact, one of the scenes (maybe the first, idr) in the new trailer was OF Bombers Bar on a run. There are public NPSI fleets running literally every day and every night, and you dont have to have any friends at all to join them, you simply have to X up in the channel.
Not only does this give you GOOD content every day that you want to do it, you may just end up MAKING some friends while you're at it.

Man, it's just like real life, or pretty much any scenario real or imagined that you can come up with. There is always going to be someone else bigger, faster, smarter, more experienced (etc etc) than you. If you think that dooms you to the bottom of the barrel, you're doing it wrong.

p.s. interesting method to create a trailer. Please don't copy WoW. Pandas in space would really suck. If that is what you call "expanded game play" i don't want it.
Expansions in most MMOs do not expand game play. They add one more linear story that everyone somehow independently completes.
