I think that usually, as the boxes start to dissapear from the shelves, and the devs wants more people, they'll start to consider some sort of d/l system. Usually, you can d/l the client, pay a small one time only amount to get a key, and then start playing. I think, but I'm not sure, that most have you pay for the key.
Anyway, that is what might happen after a while, I'm not aware of any current plans to do this, but on the other hand I doubt they'd tell me if there were such plans.

EVE never seemed to appear on that many UK shelves in the first place...
What was CCP's distribution policy? Keep it small?

Game had a European "exclusive" for the first month. From what I heard it bombed (big time) and more or less got pulled from their shelves mid-June. Certainly in the UK you shouldn't actually be able to find a Game shop that has it in stock as they only sell it mail-order now (and they have to order it in for you).
I dunno where all these UK people are seeing it "on shelves" as I've never seen it anywhere other than Game - and that was in the first 6 weeks after retail.

ww/ea did this for earth and beyond it seems to have worked. though to tell the truth i have seen little to no advertising for eve. and as you know no advertising for a game like this means even less people will think about picking it up. though i highly doubt that eve will "die" there where plenty of doom saying posts on the enb boards a while back as well. --------- M F caulsing havoc one frigate at a time. |

If "Game" had an exclusive to EVE, surely the Marketing Monkeys at CCP realised they were constraining their potential sales catchment.
I wonder what would have happened if more UK retailers had got their mitts on this title?
Perhaps, once the majority of the bugs have been squashed, a re-release might be in order. ...And a marketing campaign that actually does the title justice.

Oh Game pushed it as much as they could and it didn't do much good. You're obviously in the UK? Remember playing on Barrysworld servers? That's game.net now and I know there's at least two senior management people that still play this game and read these forums. They can (and no doubt would if it wasn't the truth) feel free to disagree with what I've said.
A re-release? You surely jest?
This game is dead in the water - and that's from someone who still actively plays it. What it needs is a serious injection of cash to expand the depleted dev team, improve the disheartened customer service team and eradicate the moderation team (some of whom have proven themselves morons of the first order). This isn't ever going to happen though. Want to know why? Three little letters - SWG. CCP quite simply cannot compete with that marketing machine. The fact that CCPs publishers have crashed and burned now doesn't help either.
IMHO the only thing that will (from this point) increase the server population is a free one month trial that can be downloaded. It won't happen though - and you can't blame CCP for that. S&SI are divesting themselves of the interactive division and until that is complete then the "marketing" of the game is in limbo.
The real problem with the game is the server-side BW limiting. I can see why they thought this was necessary based on their optimistic view of subscriber numbers, but I think it's actually having an adverse effect on the db s/w by holding transactions open for far longer than necessary. Some of you will understand what I'm driving at and some of you won't

actually still on the shelves is bad news (not selling)
as time goes by, i think the price should step downwards, better to sell the boxed copies cheaper than not to sell them at all.
When Eve reaches it's first birthday, maybe CCP could strike up a deal with Pc Gamer or another magazine to release the client onto their covermount DVD disk
Obviously with a clear warning, that the first 30 days are free trial, and subscription fee's apply after that.
Bet they would get a shedloads of new subscribers though |

It's still on the shelves in portland.oregon.usa but it's the fastest game to get discounted to $19.95 that I've ever seen...
I think it stayed at the original price for less than 30 days

I just read the Homelan interview and in it they said they purposely didnt advertise the game to keep the starting player base small. I'm sure we can all appreciate that, look at what its like now. Imagine what it would be like with twice as many people, I shudder to think. The interview sheds some light on the future of the game and the future sounds interesting. EVE could benefit from a AO-esque rebirth, at least it's in better shape than AO was. All I can say is they need to put Reverse Engineering in the game before they release Tech 2. If Miner 2's drop to around production cost it would be good for newbs to be able to buy a Cu-Vapor with their first few loads of ore.

Quoting from PCZone #135, Dec 2003:
"New content opens the Eve universe to wider appeal ...
"... the Eve universe is currently undergoing a major content upheaval, designed to attract new players and shake things up for veteran space cadets...the coming months will see a host of changes, from new ships (such as the highly armed 'elite frigates') to customisable mining platforms ... to the long awaited player-built stations"
PCZone is running a competition to win 50 days of eve-online in this issue.
Now, I'm no expert, but Game in my home town appears to have a number of copies of eve on the shelves again, there are 'veteran' players who left being offered free days to encourage them to return, major content has been set up and about to kick off soon by way of the championships for a new Amarr emperor, and competitions are beginning to appear in the press - so maybe this is the start of a marketting push for new players now that the game is more settled and established.
It's almost as if CCP had some kind of business plan right from the start - who'd have thought it? ;)

Edited by: Nemiyen on 17/10/2003 19:02:08 Edited by: Nemiyen on 17/10/2003 19:01:13 Well, I own 3 copies of Eve online bought from the SAME Game shop in Doncaster (Frenchgate center one). Sad I know but hey
Out of the 3 I bought only 1 of them has the online subscription needed label, the first and second ones I bought didn't have the label (I know for a fact the first one didn't), but I knew it was an online game because a friend on another online game recommended me to play eve.
The fact the game is called Eve "ONLINE" you would have thought would tell even the dumbest people that it is an online game .
However, I can understand people compaining - 2 of the boxes I own ONLY have a price tag on and unless you read the small print on the bottom of the back of the box there's no real way you know it needs a subscription and a credit card to play .
The one that does have the label in the bottom right of the box clearly says you need to pay a month fee to play but it also doesn't say by credit card.
Anyway, the fact that some boxes don't clearly state this important information and game will refuse any returns of it (because of the CD-Key) then I quite understand people complaining to the trading standards office.
However, those that didn't see the label (if there was one) and still tried complaining are just... well..... dumb
