I've decided to give Vista RC1 a real run through, and EVE being my game of choice these days I thought I'd give it a go.
The good news: It runs!
The bad news: It currently looks better on my system in WinXP SP2.
I've installed the newest Nvidia Vista drivers for RC1, released Sept. 1st 2006 (I'm running a P4 3GHz, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 6800GT 256MB), and it runs no differently than the drivers Vista installs by default. Part of the problem I would assume would be the way Vista sees EVE's request to use DirectX. When the programs starts, I get the following dialoge box:
"Try continue with old DirectX version?
DirectX 9.0 detected but this application needs 9.0b. Click Yes to continue, but the application may not run. Click No to go to support web page where you can download the latest DirectX runtime files."
And for good measure, here's the screenshot:
Anti-aliasing doesn't seem to work in game, nor does Nvidia control panel Anisotropic filtering (textures all look "muddy" basically). So, what to do? Is this a CCP issue, or a Microsoft issue in the way Vista is seeing DirectX 9.0C games? I'll definitely submit an issue ticket to MS if I find that it's a Vista issue, but I thought I'd mention it here first!
Thanks,

By the way, just so it's not automatically assumed I'm an uninformed n00b... ;) I am aware of the upcoming DX10 "EVE Vista" implementation and the updates to "EVE Classic". Nevertheless, coming into Vista I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that I should at least be getting image quality on par with what I'm already experiencing in WinXP SP2.
I basically just want to help out and make sure EVE runs great NOW for Vista beta testers, because I think both Vista and future EVE have it in their best interests to look their best and work together as smoothly as possible! Thanks again.

Antialiasing is working fine here with a X1900XTX and ATI's RC1 drivers, so any AA problems would seem to be an Nvidia issue. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Edited by: Doneeta on 04/09/2006 03:33:53 Good to hear! :) Hopefully then it'll be fixed soon.
Do you also get the same DirectX dialogue box when you start the game?

Vista just doesn't report the letter for DX9 I'm guessing - it'll eventually start reporting DX10 I suppose. The dialog can be bypassed by editing one of the python-script files.

Yep :) DX10 is installed by default on RC1. Runs like a charm too, i might add.

Could I request some fpd and cpu usage information please.
Dx9 is on software emulation I believe, so I would like to see the performance differance compared to current WinXP ------------------- Management and Leadership û The Eve-online Guide |

DX9 is definitely not software emulated in Vista. Anyhow, fps in vista beta2 vs xp; xp has twice as much fps on my computer, which can pretty much be directly attributed to running Aero Glass.

I've done some benchmarking using 3dmark2001, just to give you a rough idea. My 3dmark2k3 didn't want to install on Vista for some reason, I don't know if my copy is barfed or what.
Anyway, 2500+, 9800pro, default 2k1 benchmark options. The XP is sp2 and was installed about a week ago, latest drivers. Vista is RC1 using whatever drivers I could update with:
Vista: 10k XP: 13k
I assume the emulation and beta drivers are causing the discrepancy, although it's hard to say to what degree at the moment.

Unless you have a DX10 video card(which I highly doubt), you are not running DX10, your running the DX9 version in Vista. It may say DX10, but underneath it has DX9 files that don't interfear with DX10, unlike the last release of beta that they took out the DX9 part and you had to install it for EVE to work.
And yes, DX10 will not fully kick in until you have a full DX10 video card.
And the faults you find with your DX9 video card, it is the new version of DX9 files revamped for vista. The pre-RC1 beta had most of the DX9 files in there already cuase too many people gave feedback of them removing DX9 out of build 5384.
But to really use DX10 requires a DX10 video card.
And yes, that DX popup comes up every time. Just clcik yes, and go on your mary way. Not used my pre-RC1 beta too much with EVE, I know I did not have to registry hack it to get the fonts to appear this time, to say what kind of FPS I am getting, will do that this week sometime.
And when DX10 cards are out and the new DX10 Client comes out, I will be downloading it.. :) I'll even beta it if I get the DX10 card before they release the EVE DX10 version and they need help.

Thanks for your replies everyone.
I'm fairly well-versed in how DX9 and DX10 handles communication to the hardware, and with the software issues involved, and I do realize I can't possibly run in DX10 mode...expecially with no DX10 cards out yet :)
What I'm more concerned with is how Vista sees EVE and how EVE sees Vista, and in making sure it's running at full DirectX 9.0C capability until the new DX10 version comes out. I'm upgrading my system to a Core 2 Duo this week and was thinking of staying in Vista RC1 to keep testing daily use...but damn, EVE just looks so much better to me in XP right now! :)

I know this is a bit OT, but is there supposed to be any kind of beta testing or anything of that nature for Vista, or is Microsoft pretty much just letting partners prepare for its release and not releasing it to the public in any form until '07?

Sorry to go off track slightly but Dx/Eve issues aside, how is Vista running over all?
I ask because I considered trying it out (had beta 2 (I think) but before I tried it out I had to get a new hard drive and just stuck xp back on).
Assuming it will only get better, would you recommend trying it out, or just to stick with XP. I only really play Eve and browse the web so nothing would be lost necessarily but if there's nothing to gain then I'll wait a while.

I'm running EVE on RC1 and I must say it is nice to finaly use the same OS now for EVERYTHING instead of switching between XP and Vista... but for some reason, my fps on Vista is below 11 and on XP it is allways above 60!! Any hints in how to optimize this?

well, allican if some are waiting for a direct x 10 graphics card, you might well forget about getting one anytime soon. nvidia and ati have said they wont make them until microsoft reverses it desicision ondirect x 10 being backwards compatible due not wanting to make os specific hardware. hence is why nvidias new dual gpu card and atis new crossfire arn't direct x10 capable yet? apperently on nvidia forums they said most existing cards fron the fx series on up can be diretx 10 capable thru driver and bios upgrades depending on the card. but they wont release those. and asked that the communitty to help put pressure onmicrosoft to reverse its stance on the backwards compatibility. so i wouldn't be to quick to jump into vista quite yet. I wouldn't mind seeing EVE released in multiple graphics engines.
One for DX9, one for DX10 and another for OpenGL (meh, it makes it easier for people to run EVE in Linux... not that I care).
I get the feeling CCP don't *quite* have the time to do that though. Heh.

Hmm well i have vista rc1 installed now and it seems to stutter alot :( which is ashame as vista seems to run quite nicely. i might try turning off aero and see if thats the problem.
but like i am getting 60fps in the station, but as soon as you try to rotate aroudn your ship it starts stuttering.
good job i kept the win xp install. wierd thing is i have tried some of my other directx games on vista and they ran fine. so not sure what is killing eve so much. also have the ati vista rc1 drivers installed on a fresh install of vista and eve.

Just dug up this interesting article on Vista's use of memory. It mentions how programs with large memory requirements (such as games) can be affected by Vista's new Superfetch memory management.

I have a dell latop and Vista RC1 and it runs really smooth at 1920x1200 FS or windowes at 1920x1024. dell inspiron 9300 1gb ram 2ghz pentium M geforce go 6800 with 512mb
I got the updated vista drivers downloaded with windows update. Also World of warcraft gives around 40fps with details maxed, and around 30fps inside ogrimar.

To anyone getting high frame rates then stuttering when trying to change the camera angle, there is a pretty high chance you're using an ATI card and if you are you'll want to revert back to the default drivers and throw the current ATI Beta drivers out the window. Tried them myself and was subjected to a massive preformance decrease. Give not using them a try with RC1 and I suspect you'll see an improvement. The same may apply with Nvidia beta drivers for Vista.
