I would like to be able to build a Jumpgate, or a pair of jumpgates, to link two systems, either already linked or not, and charge some isk to the ships travelling through it.
It could be useful to have them built in a deadspace pocket to increase security, maybe make them only available to your corp members or to those with good standing.
Also, it could be interesting to make all jumpgates in game conquerable, they would be the ultimate tool to protecting your space.

I recall someone mentioning this kind of gate as a POS structure that might be introduced. Not sure how long ago, and whether it was a CCP idea or their own...

Maybe a good idea is to make this player owned gate a player defended one. People pay some fee to jump through secured gate - no gatecamps on both ends.
maybe like little POS with powerfull turrets around the gates or the gate can be protected by the fleet of the corporation owning the gate.
Even some kind of insuranse to be provided, if people get killed jumping through these gates. If the owner corp can't defend them, they receive the insurance.

I think it could be a nightmare for the developers to have new jumpgates springing up all over the place, they probably wonĘt like players messing about with the layout of EVE, doing things like liking a 0.0 system with a 1.0 and such, but if you limit the range of a jumpgate those things could be prevented.
It could be a way to allow players to expand EVE, developers would just have to put some unexplored systems within range of a jumpdrive and let players build the facilities to detect/find them and build the gates to link them with known space.
It could work like building a pair of Jumpdrive enabled ships, placing them in separate systems and linking them when you activate them. They could be anchored for good becoming indestructible, only conquerable and managed by the sovereign state/alliance.
Also, it should be possible for a coverop ships to hack a gate to allow them to travel through if they are standing driven.

Phhbt, just make their cost comparable to that of an outpost (well, maybe 5 to 10 bil in construction costs), AND require constant refueling like a POS tower... either to operate at all, or per outgoing jump. The further the jump (distance spanned), the more fuel consumed (some constants times distance in LY to the power of two, or even to the power of three). In other words, want to jump 10 times farther ? Then "pay" 100 or 1000 times more.
The POGs (player owned gates, heh) would need to be in systems you have sov. over to anchor AND operate (making this a 0.0 only item). Well, at least the "initiating" gate, making this a (possibly) one-way trip to a gate in a "sieged" system.
And of course, you could then start charging people to let them use the gate(s) :) __ Always question everything. Including yourself. |

At the moment we have this module, the Jump Portal Generator I, as a module to be fitted in a Capital ship:
Jump Portal Generator I A piece of machinery designed to allow a capital vessel to create a bridge between systems without the use of a stargate, allowing its companions access through vast tracts of space to join it on the battlefield.
So the basic coding for a dynamic linkage of systems must be already developed. It should be not too difficult then to release a ship designed just to fit and run permanently that module, or some kind of structure with the same ability that could be fed by a Control Tower as MaKaVeLi said.

Just you bringing up the term 'POGs' justifies it to go into the game :)
We got carebears. We got griefers We got gankers
Time to add POGs to the list.

The jump portal (if I'm not mistaking) works a bit different than a stargate... and can be fitted only on titans (due to CPU restrictions).
As far as I know, it's something like "when titan jumps with jump portal equipped/activated, all ganged ships within 5km of the titan jump too". Or, at least that's what I heard, I can't fly titans on SiSi :p __ Always question everything. Including yourself. |

Nothing wrong with it in systems you can snatch sovereignty of. You can already use cynusural fields to jump capital ships across the galaxy (for prohibitive fuel costs :p)
So someone wants to run a jumpgate? Fine. They have to power the thing...and of course they recoup their costs by charging a toll to nonassociated players for using it :p
