Ok, I'm getting sick of this. Drones are >TERRIBLE<. Yes, that's right, terrible. Not in the sense that they do crap dps, they dont, or dont fullfill their role, but its just that theyre SO GODDAMNED STUPID!
So here's the situation. I'm running a l4 mission in my dominix. I send 5 ogres after a battleship at 42km. 3 Battleships are currently firing on me. I need to pop this BS quick or my tank fails. So, the drones get 90% of the way there, and turn around and attack a BS 30km from them. I dont notice for about 10 seconds, wasting another 5% of my armor. They kill the bs after commanding them 4 times to do so, and once it is dead, one of the drones decides to just not be in my control any more! So, I launch another drone to attack the 2nd BS. It turns around, attacks a swarm of NPCs about 40km away, which I didnt want to attack. Great, now I have 4 bs's and a bunch of cruisers on me.
CCP, I am ****ed. The dominix is basically broken due to stupid assed drones. These bugs mean life or death sometimes. Please, please fix them. There was once a magical time when drones did as they where told, called Exodus. Please? ---------------------------

Uhm. So you should need skills to avoid them from going astray and attacking random targets, getting mass aggro in missions? I dont think thats right somehow ---------------------------

Change those Lv4 kills for a few hours of mining and you're fine
But then I cant get jumpclones. Unless mining gives you + standing to astral mining? ---------------------------

I've rarely had a problem with drones and L4 Extravaganza (Angel/Guristas) missions.
You have to keep check on them, and reissue commands immediately after they get done with a target, or scoop them.
If you're running close to breaking your tank in a L4 where the entire spawn isn't aggroed, then you need to work on your tank skills. The only time I ever had a problem is in a L4 Angel Extravaganza where one drone went haywire in the 4th level and lit the entire spawn up, I had to let them push me into armor to keep cap, and then worked on killing everything.

Its not a tanking problem, I can tank everything bar 3x elite drone parasites (pain ). But it's more that you issue a command, and drones go off and attack a different target. Its stupid ---------------------------

Being a huge drone user I have to agree with the OP. Nothing ticks me off more than sending my drones after a target and watching them fly about 75% of the way to it then for some unknown reason they decide that target is not shiny enough and go after something else.
This is what I've noticed when my drones get all stupid. It usually happens after I tell slow moving drones (heavies) to go attack something that is not firing on me (structure or ship that hasn't agro'd me yet) and they are farther away than 50km from my ship (using a Drone Link Augmentor I). I don't think I've ever seen this happen at less than 50km.
Can a dev look into this and let us know if this is intended behavior? I can't imagine why it would be but you never know...

Drones are truly crap at following orders.
I have to tell them to do everything several times to get them to do it, and trying to get them back in my ship is quite a challenge. ----------

I think I know what the problem is, but I need to investiate a bit as I seem to have become unsure....
For some reason the fact that ~50% of the people replying to the thread fail to read and understand the point of the OP is hilarious. |

It's even worse with sentry drones, since they don't have to fly anywhere to shoot the wrong thing. Drop sentries in a room with NPC sentry guns or missile batteries and you're risking full room aggro since those are what sentries like to make priority targets.

Edited by: Noluck Ned on 06/09/2006 13:24:50 Yes I agree
I also have had to get my ass out of several lvl 4's cause the aggro gets randomly pulled.
It not limited to heavies either, my sentry drones arealso perfectly capable of pulling a random spawns aggro onto you all by themselves. the trouble occours whenyou dont notice that the drone is being targetted and it pops or when you pull it in to regen shields. Thats the point when you realise thayt the 6 or 8 bs that used to be 90km away are now right in your face and locking you .

Edited by: Par''Gellen on 06/09/2006 13:24:57 Another thing that gets to me about drones is getting them back inside the drone bay. Why for the love of God are there TWO drone "scoop" commands based on distance? If the drones are farther away than 1500 meters then you have to tell them to "Return To Drone Bay". If they are closer than 1500 meters then you have to tell them to "Scoop To Drone Bay". If you have some farther than 1500 meters and some closer than 1500 meters you have to tell them to do BOTH! Crazy! How about getting rid of "Scoop To Drone Bay" completely and just make the damn drones enter the drone bay when the player clicks "Return To Drone Bay" no matter how far away they are? If I'm not mistaken this is probably the cause of a lot of people thinking that drones won't return to the drone bay when told to.

Edited by: Par''Gellen on 06/09/2006 13:41:50 Speaking to the drones targetting random NPC's I think I know why that happens. If you are out of range of an NPC agro "scanner" and it hasn't noticed you then it's still in "scanning for hostiles" mode. If one of your drones flies within agro range of said NPC then the NPC attacks the drone as if it's a player. This in turn makes the little drone angry and it will attack back after it's primary target has been destroyed thereby agro'ing the entire group of previously non-agro'd NPC's (if it hasn't already agro'd them just by flying near them). Also, when launching drones after already being agro'd I've noticed that the drones will not do anything except orbit your ship until told to do something. However, after you tell them to engage something and their target is destroyed they go after random targets that are attacking you (or them). This usually winds up being a sentry gun which in turn agro's EVERYTHING.
Suggesstion: Change drone AI so that they don't go flying around all willy-nilly attacking whatever they want after their current orders have be completed. If they select a new NPC to attack on their own have them ALL attack the same NPC. Heck you could even add a new skill for it. Drone Linking: 20% chance per level that drones will all agree on the same target when left to their own devices and not go flying around acting stupid.

Tell me about it!
I ve written a number of threads on this issue - symtoms u described and others - but they seldom attract any attention from either the forumites or devs. Neither have I come across ANY info on this issue from CCP.
It would be really really sweet if ccp could be botehred to comment on this. Its time, NOW.

Damn, I must have some really good luck because I never have any problems with the Drone AI... They always do exactly what I tell them, never change targets, etc...
Only thing I don't like about drones is having to go pick them up 40km+ away while moving at 100m/s after getting disconnected!

It would make me happy if drones would at least concentrate there fire on 1 target all the time, but no any form of tactical thinking is beyond them and so they waste away their firepower.
At least the return to drone bay command is working fine, good thing ccp fixed that.
