after loosing two caracals yesterday i realized i had spend 75% of my day playing eve rebuilding them and a small fraction of time enjoying the game getting in some pvp and time in low security.
i think the most frustrating thing in this game is not being killed or podded but the time it takes running around putting another ship together. i can live with it but an idea popped into my mind i thought might be worth mentioning...probablly again as im sure im not the first to think of it.
I thought when we build a new ship and buy insurance there might be another option to purchase a one use construction order. what it would be simply is an agreement between us and the insurer for them to build a predetermined ship of our choosing upon the destruction of our ship.
so i build a caracal...speak to my insurance broker and insure it. at the same time i buy a construction order to duplicate the ship exactlly as it was at the time it was insured.
now...if i already own some of the parts or a blueprint for the ship i would simply put them in my top level inventory, they would automatically be removed for use in its construction. all other parts i do not already own, including the hull would be automatically purchased on the open market at the lowest price. they would be auto transported to the insuring facility and used in the assembly of the new vessel.
the cost of all the new parts would be immediatelly deducted from your bank account...if you lacked the funds then you cant buy a construction order. also a broker/construction fee would be tacked on to the cost for the service much like insuance.
now building of the new ship would be linked to the destruction of the insured ship. upon destruction the contract would take immediate effect and after a certain period of time....lets say 15-30 minutes the ship would be complete and ready for pickup at the insuring facility.
another option/possibility that might be a bit more complicated could be the creation of a specific ship...so basically you could hand pick another ship to be assembled instead of a carbon copy of what your insuring.

For me, the largest waste of time is buying and picking up the fitting. I hope that the contract system makes already-fitted ships a commonplace sale.

good point. maybe the service could be extended and become a regular station service instead of attached to the insurance process. so basically i could go to a station offering the service, bring up the service screen, custom pick and order a new ship and pay a fee to have it built by the construction service. this service would hand deliver all the needed parts and auto assemle the ship at the station it was purchased from. again parts or BP's in our possesion could be used in the construction ...however we would need to bring them and drop them on the construction screen or put them in top lvl inventory.

Lovely, except that it puts 95% of industrialists out of a job overnight. If you want an instant replacement ship, buy in bulk and set several up ready to go, job done...

how? i dont understand? sorry still a noob....honest question.
the process still uses parts on the market built by players. it doesnt create parts for the ordered ship it buys them at the lowest, or median price on the open market, including the hulls.
alot of us cant afford to buy in bulk...im livivng from ship to ship....try to remember were not all rich. the idea was mainly thought of to save time replacing our ships or constructing them so we could spend more of it out in the eveverse blowing things up.

Edited by: Jaketh Ivanes on 06/09/2006 14:42:37 What you do is buy 5 caracals and 5x the items for fitting. Fit every single one of them and when you lose one, you just insure the next one and undock.

k, didn't get that fully. Does it deliver them to you as well? Cos that'll turn into a shipping service very quickly. And if it doesn't, what's wrong with the quickbar?

well what i envision is a screen like the ship fitting screen. you pick and choose the ship and all its parts (havnt figured that part out, drag and drop?)could be a different interface...you choose your ship and every part...confirm the order and the service automatically assembles it in a certain period of time. so for example after choosing, confirming and paying for the new ship and all its parts, the service plucks the hull and modules off the open market. it does not deliver them to you personally but instead constructs a fully built ship from them. as a concern you just made me aware of i think all modules used should be limited to the buying region and could not be purchased from space stations in regions of space .04 or lower.
off to work...i'll try and reply in a little more detail later...

It might be good, only if they also charge you for shipping costs.

absolutely, there would definatelly be a cost for the service...and again its not a delivery service but a construction service. to avoid people from abusing it as a delivery service i think the modules used for the ship should be limited to the market in the region of space the building station is in and no items may be purchased from space .04 or less secure.
also to prevent people from buying a particular module of interest and using the service to deliver it as part of a ship and then just plucking it off the ship...the service would require you to pick a hull first. after choosing a hull you would be required to fit the hull with enough modules to fill 2/3rds of its power core and cpu output.
also you couldn't buy a torpedo launcher and try to buy a cheap IBIS to fit it on just to get a module delivered. all the power, cpu and fitting demands we normally face outfitting a ship would apply to the service as well. i also thought to try and limit abusing the service as a means of delivery, maybe all purchased hulls (not modules attached)would be NON resellable. not sure if it would be necessary though.

I agree that it would hurt industrialists. If NPC insurance companies are spawning ships without anyone mining, researching or manufacturing to get them into the market, ships become a one-off purchase. Why buy another ship when the one you've got is imortal, thanks to the magic of insurance?

There's an instant-build button already in the game for when you need a new ship. It's under Market, labeled "Buy."
I will agree that pulling together fittings for a ship is a pain in the behind, however. Being able to place a bundled market order for a defined list of modules, perhaps specifying they all be withing 1-2 jumps of each other, would be great. But having ships automatically build, automatically provide the difference in minerals (even at a cost), and at an increased rate (if you can build a Caracal in the 15-30 minutes you proposed, I'd like to convo you), is sheer madness born out of laziness.

i thought i made it fairly clear on two or more occasions in the post at various places that the service does not create anything, it puts things together. in order to build a complete ship you must choose modules and hulls off the open market that have already been made available from players. as far as i can tell this has absolutelly no effect on the economy or industrialists as it would still require the parts you all produce to outfit the ship...and if a hull or module is not available on the market you cant get one...

i think you misunderstood me as well....as i just mentioned in the previous reply its simply a service that takes already built or available parts off of the open market. it doesnt literally make a hull from the available minerals and materials....i think thats what you assumed i meant. what i really mean is it takes already assembled items....for example when my ship blows up i go to the market...click on cruisers/caracal and choose one. its the same idea. its just a service to choose whats already there. it basically is a time saver for assembling and picking up the parts...or flying to go get them. i agree trying to have some system to build things from raw materials would be extremelly difficult...im not considering that at all in my idea.

I get the main idea of this and although i would love it, untill CCP makes an NPC hauling corp it just cant happen.
Another idea would be if these bulk orders were put on the market in your name with every item being 4% above market value. Your insurance screen would then tell you when your ship is ready. The only auto thing about this would be if someone is selling something in the station you need and they would buy for less.
I chose 4% for no reasion other than i dont like numbers above 5 (There all evil) and lower than 4% seems to small a price for being lazy

i have to appologize to some of you that may have misunderstood me because of my choice of words. i just realized i think im confusing some of you. what i meant by building was prolly not what some of you crafters are thinking. you are probablly assuming i mean build from scratch (the raw materials). in my noobish choice of the word build i actually mean assemble the already built pieces. the already complete hulls and the already available modules. hope that clears things up a bit.

I see, that makes more sense, but I find that acquiring the stuff is less troublesome than getting it all to one place, and as someone said above, it would be problematic to teleport goods and it would be less than helpful if they just bought the cheapest ones in the region. If you went for the closest, then the insane sell orders would put you in the poor house.
How would insurance know to strike the right balance between cost and distance?
