Edited by: Khae on 07/09/2006 17:37:14 Could someone clarify or confirm two concepts for me...
1) Is a safe spot generally a bookmark you make when warping? I know to be truly safe you would have to make a second or third bookmark from the first while warping but is this the general idea?
2) When your told to watch local are you just keeping an eye out for chatter... Are there other things you should look for to warn you of possible attack (other than looking on the map for current ganking places)?
Thanks!

1) Well, you seem to have a pretty good idea what a safespot is, actually :) One bookmark wonŠt do though.
2) Learn to use the scanner properly next to checking local - Caleb Paine made a nice vid on that, which you will find linked to in this topic Linkage (wasnŠt sure if Caleb would mind the direct linkage, so opted for not posting that). Another thing: there are intel channels for regions - best is if you ask in local if anybody knows if there is one for wherever you are.

I was told by a friend that when making a safespot bookmark to use at least three different warps. I was also told to jettison something at my safespot and point my ship straight up or down, turn on my afterburner and truck my ship away from the jetcan about 300-500km on the "Z" axis. Supposed to buy you a little time to get away if things get ugly and you get scanned.

Forgive my ignorance here, but why bother with making a seperate bookmark? Isn't it just as useful to warp using the right click option? I can get a destination selected quickly (different belt, station whatever)that way..
Thanks!

Thing is, if you warp to a warpable location, you can be found there easily. In a safespot noone can warp to you unless they got a bookmark or are in your gang.

Additionally, the reason for making multiple bookmarks is so that you're not on the warp-path between two celestial objects - as these are the easiest to find, and you flash-up briefly on the overview of people taking the same path.

I'm not sure I understand the concept of jettison something... wont other people be able to see the jettisoned can on there displays and be able to warp there? Is jettisoning something the only way the game will remember the change in the z axis?
As far as changing your z axis... is this to put your ship on a different plan in the short term so when you warp back you will not only be in a different part of space but above or below your enemy's scanner field?...
BTW thanks everyone! |

Well, they might find it on the scanner, but a jetcan can not be warped to. They would have to approach it if at all.

The jetcan is only there so you can tell how far you are from where your current "safe-spot" bookmark is located. That way you know you're 367km UP from the bookmark and not 36.7km...
Not to mention, if you pre-make your SS bookmarks (smart idea in some places) the jetcan will have hopefully popped before you even have to use it. They do only stick around for 2 hours or so.
I do believe the up/down distance helps protect you from people who jump in on your Safespot. They end up 300km below you, giving you enough time to warp to a gate and jump.

Moving 300km in any direction from your safe spot does you exactly zero good. People aren't finding your bookmark, they're finding YOU, usually using scan probes. The 3.0AU probes will give them more or less your exact location, not the location of your can or safespot.
As for "watching local," you're not necessarily just watching for chatter. You're looking at who is coming and going from your system. Any time a new character enters local, you should show info on them. Pay particular attention to their security ratings and standings. If a dude with a -9.8 sec rating enters local, chances are pretty good that he's a pirate. If you sniff that guy anywhere near you on the scanner, or if he hops into the location you're in, jump to your safe spot IMMEDIATELY - unless you're trying to kill him, that is.

^ What he said about local. You can also often get useful information from peoples' bios and corp.
But never rely on any of that stuff completely for your safety. There are plenty of high sec rating folks with happy miner bios and belonging to "Carebear Inc." who'll be happy to pod you given a chance. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
