Sounds silly, but I'm serious.
If a module is used by too many people then CCP nerf it. Look at the nerfs to afterburners, shield hardeners, weapon mods etc.
Well, everyone uses mining lasers because they are the only items which can be used to mine roids. Which is silly because this, in turn, leads to an easy monopoly should any one person or corporation corner the market on the single next best thing in mining technology. QV Techell and co.
It's also not very realistic. In theory it would take a lot of other items to mine an asteroid from space. What about dust collectors, ore packing machines, mining survey assay systems etc etc. Add a load of extra technological aspects mining and suddenly the miners get to have just as much fun optimising their ship loadouts for maximum gains as the fighters do.
there are a LOT of people out there who do mining (myself excluded ) and IMO it's time the entire mining system was carefully examined and given a full overhaul. And I don't mean by just adding a single new ore type and a single new technology to mine it with.
Cross-posting this to the ideas lab as well, not that anyone ever reads that forum...

You're right, it does sound silly; but at the same time it makes sense.
What really struck me was your comment "Add a load of extra technological aspects mining and suddenly the miners get to have just as much fun optimising their ship loadouts for maximum gains as the fighters do."
That's something I never considered before, but thinking on it now it should be that way.

My first reaction to this post was "AHH GEEZ!! this guys gives carebears a bad name"
HOWEVER, my second thought was OK, maybe he has a point.
This game is NOT all about PVP. it is about picking a career and then going out and doing it. Some people wanna do PVP, Some people wanna just mine, Some people wanna trade, some people wanna run agent missions.... You get the idea.
This game should allow you to choose a career and then do it. It is CCP's job to keep everybody interested in there choosen career in eve. So yes I would agree with allowing more specialized equipment to enhance anybody's choosen game profession.
I spent 12 hours in 0.0 mining last night dodging pirates from several corps. I have had my fill of that for a few weeks. I was very happy to be able to see simple things like STATIONS and Police protection.
THANK CCP for having a game that allows me to do that. "Its all fun and games til somebody gets Podded" |

One tool that comes to mind is the mobile refinery. But a whole suite of tools .. (eg. module to boost mining return like damange enhancers) would be cool.
Personally i hate mining, but there are many people in my corp who love it, and i can see boredom on the horizon. | Join eve-webring.com to promote your site. |

but seriously we need to revamp the mining-i don't mine myself and i don't mine because its boring, i'm not going to say these games are better on a whole but lets look at other game's mining systems-EnB we had to jump from asteroid to asteroid because the asteroids we're small and took seconds to mine, along side this other then glowing asteroid or crystalline asteroid they didn't tell us what was in it, we only had a guess judging by its tech lvl, when we did approach the asteroid and mine it we found it to hold a dozen different ores in small quantities or maybe one in high quantity but most of the stuff was just npc food except for a short list in comparision to the other ores of "rare" ores which players used and we were able to sell at premium prices because they were rare. In runescape they applied almost the same system we have here origionaly-head out to a certain rock which is a certain type of ore and hit it with a pick axe until your full of that type of ore or need a mix to make the type of material you want. In this game we fly out start mining-throw the ore into space (which in sense shouldn't be different then not mining at all except for the fact that it is somewhat more refined) and then after mining for four hours when we decide we have an indy full we leave the ore and come back with an indy and scoope up the ore bring it back to the station-sell whole refine or what not but except for going to get an indy and picking up the ore it revolves around how long we can stay in one spot-seriously think about it we mainly use short range weapons for protection mining because we don't want to have to move when the pirates approach. it would be one thing if we moved this system forward to a fleet of mining ships with a few guardians and a mobile refinery in the middle of the ore feild and the huge group stripes the entire area devoid of any kind of material. anyways-just my thoughts sorry if it was a long post.

I think this is a good idea to pursue. Granted slapping on a miner is much easier than finding the right weapon and mod to go with. More mining tools for those chosing a career in mining is a nice idea. Mobile refineries & manufacturing plants are some ideas I've heard brought up before. These fairly (if not totally) defensless platforms could bring a new twist on the production community. Brings a new and modern concept to the traveling salesman idea.

They will need to add larger contaners to deploy near moble refinerys.
