My second account mines with 8 lasers 9 harvesters, mining lv5, mining drones lv5, and astrogeology lv4. Yes, i could spend months training interfacing, astro to lv5, but this will raise my speed from around 1000m3/min to 1100m3/min. And there is no benefit beyond that.
There are several people in my corp with similiar mining abilities. There are also several that haul with Iteron 5 indies.
Right now we just can't mine any faster, without increasing the number of players we have.
We are trying to develop a strong logistical support base to handle the loss of BSs in our fleet during future wars. Right now it is capped. Our logistics can't get any better then they are, without recruiting more people.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to take Logistical capabilities further. ie: advanced mining skill, advanced mining drone skill, better mining drones, better mining lasers, a capacity skill that increases cargo capacity for haulers.
Mabye even a pure mining ship. It could have 8 turrets, huge cargo and drone capacity, but terrible powergrid so no big guns.
I am hoping deep core mining, and mobile refineries gets rid of this ceiling that exists on current logistical capabilities, so we can spend more time fighting and less time mining.

Personally, I don't see the problem..
You're always able to recruit .. or use buy orders to maintain supply of low-end minerals while you concentrate on higher-end, better profit enterprises ..
The way I see it, it's already scarily easy to deplete the mineral resources of a system as it is .. giving people access to additional skills; increasing yield to the extent that you're talking about .. you'd hit another logistical ceiling when you were running out of resources every couple of days.

Edited by: Chucky on 19/10/2003 18:37:48 I said a long time ago that there should be mining ships with 8-10 miners and a bonus per lvl. Resourse gathering takes up way to much time vs. pirates just stealing what ever they need. I hope they listen to you, cause they warn me for speaking my mind
... you will see more and more marketing which in turn will bring you more players to torture. |

It probably will, but it won't help. You'll move people away from mining and into fighting until you hit the new logistical ceiling - there has to be one *somewhere* - and then you'll want that moving upwards because you still won't like mining.
Please don't interpret this as a whine; I don't have any problem with you wanting to fight instead of mining. I just wanted to point out that no matter how high the ceiling might be, it's still there, and people will still reach it. The best solution is for you to use the profits from fighting to pay someone else to do the mining for you.
Incidentally, my corp is moving into the bistot-mining market. Give me a shout sometime

HAHAHAHA!!!
How many battleships have pirates stolen from you Chucky? Do they steal then out of your hangar or when you're in the corner store buying Quafe? ----------------------------------------- Sig rented by Drethen Nerevitas. |

I am curious, Chucky: without any offense meant, did you ever try to "pirate" yourself? I think you would very quickly change that opinion. Of the many ways you can get money in this game, pirating is by far the hardest (if you leave mining in a newbie frigate out of the consideration). Especially if you try to avoid being an exploiter/griefer/whatever in the process. It is, however, also one of the most interesting ways to earn money.

Would be cool to get an additional bonus when mining in a gang.
When CCP finally adds formations to the game you can use something like 'mining formation' which gives an additional bonus for every additional gang member. --- soonÖ |

With all this what is the eventual ceiling?
I mean when CCP have added mining ships with 20 slots for miners 100k cargo holds and refineries on the spot to convert the ore and teleporters to transport it to the local space station. Just tell me where do you stop?

the problem is that there aren't enough skills outside of combat to take a character even half as far as most people are. Perhaps a specific skill for each mineral for miners, as well as a rank 8 or so general mining skill. Item type specific manufacturing skills for that crowd. More indy related skills for the haulers. Stuff like that.

I really like the idea of skills for mining specific minerals better. Dark ochre specialists, scordite specialists.
Would also be neat to have skills that made mining more fun, though as a problem with it is not all in the numbers but in the fact that it's mind-numbing work. I like the idea of adding a dynamite like process into the game. Maybe deep core refining could go something like that? Set it up, run away, blow the roids up and catch them before they disintegrate? Something more interactive would be nice.

Agreed. An excellent idea. This ties in with the thread about making mining more interesting period.

I totally agree...
there's lots of mining issues that I hope are addressed in the near future.
For example... it's ridiculous that the best mining ship in the game is a Battleship. Where's the monster 80 million dollar mining ship with no weapons and 20 mining lasers and slower than crud?
There should be a big difference between mining drones and combat drones. One has to have shields and targeting computers and weapons systems, etc, etc. There should be seperate mining drone and combat drone skills.
where's the giant haulers? the mark V takes a very long time to train the skill to use it, for not a lot of cargo space return. That thing should hold more than a cargo container.... sheesh! how about increasing the base cargo to 50k? 20 trips in the largest cargo hauler in the game just to move the minerals for 1 battleship? That's ridiculous.
