yes is there a way to rebalanse armor and shield defense in a ship and not choose only one kind if yes does this surprise the enemy in pvp and if yes what ship do u suggest? assuming no pendraising or insurance payment only bounties. |

If you want to surprise the enemy, hull tank. Using both mids and lows for tanks is only gimping your fit. At least leave enough fitting for a cyno gen if you want to play the bait tank. Or be the obvious primary.

No, that does not surprise the enemy; they kill you, they loot your stuff, and will only look at the fitting on their killboard later, and laugh at it. No time to check during the fight, so no surprise.
Tanking works like protecting against a tsunami wave: it's better to have one tall wall than two small walls. Ship has limited slots and limited power grid, use them to build one strong defense (armor or shield) rather than two weak defenses. |

first up is this a question or an observation? in other words do you want to know something or want to tell people something you have learnt
second no you cannot, for reasons already mentioned by the helpful people whom chose to give their opinion's of this idea, and no it's not a good idea either, the enemy isn't surprised in the least, and a ship to suggest? well opinions vary but maybe Gnosis. LOL fit. certainly has the capacity to fit it that way, though is a bit inefficient  to say the least.
no idea on pendraising and insurance plays little role in this topic, bounties, not sure how that works with this either.
i read the OP's "question/observation as a two part and a mystery lucky dip.
i'm probably wrong translating the overall meaning. but almost got a headache reading it. |

OP, I will play dumb this time and assume you are not doing this for trolling, but you can use a Gnosis to "surprise" other pilots since it has no specific bonuses. But that's about it, you should either stick to hull or shield tanking for best results.

Elena, are you in lowsex or hisec? Make sure you are docked and that you drop all corp roles before opening the fitting window and pressing #69 to turn off Caller ID.

All this trolling to one side, there ARE some perfectly valid fits involving both armor and shield tanking.
There is no point armor and shield tanking together if you have any specific bonuses for shield/armor resistances or repair amounts on the hull in question, or if you have fitted any modules/rig to boost resists.
If you boost resists on one of shield or armor you might as well fit reps for that, or you are wasting the boosted resists.
For example this Breacher fit is pretty popular, and works well:

I.ve had some success in the past using masb+saar slasher , dual masb+saar semi-kite breacher , extender+saar tormentor etc. Its doable and fun even tough most will say its ******** and that you gimp your fit..its not.
Thing is masb doesnt use ur actual cap and dual tanking besides increasing your tank it also means you have no resistance holes cause on one hand you got kin explo resist on shield and em therm on armor at a decent lvl so one of your repper will be optimal and the other back up till your charges replenish.
And by using one mod of each on ships with limited mid/low slots you don't necesarly remove the posability of fitting gank or tackle.
Imo try it . It worked great for me, not to mention the wtf moment from your enemies is priceless

Eve is all about choice. If you really want a dual/triple tank fit, more power to you. Find a way to make it work for you.
Doesn't matter if no one else would use it, if you can come up with something that fits your style then that is all that matters in the end. |

This would be an ideal example of tank options in EVE.
10% the ship in the loss
90% the '635 involved'.
Does it really matter what tank you have when there are 635 people locking you?
If you look at most T1 resists, EM and Therm resists go to armor, Kinetic and Explosive to shield. It's what makes Kin/ Therm damage the damage of choice. We all dual tank by design, we have no choice. At the same time, it's not a true option because of the way damage types are distributed.
Can you double tank, over tank? Yes and they work. Ask anyone who has wasted ten minutes beating on a Damnation but even the mighty Damnation would pop pretty quick if 635 people got locks on it. In cases like those, you have the i-win tank. It's called a station. |

Bait ships are the only time you should ever dual tank.
Armor tank = a lot of utility mids. Shield tank = a lot of damage mods/nano etc in lows. Dual tank = Limited, to none in both utility and low slots.
Also OP, not sure if you're trolling or just special, but if you're serious then the answer is no, don't dual tank. I would suggest you look at some losses on the killboard to get an idea on how to fit your ship.

its not only tank type where you can surprise him, armor-tanked-small-ac's against frigs... armed/combat logi ships... not many will expect this
